If you’re being compensated properly for you time, that’s not an issue. When overtime comes around for us it gets hectic. A bunch of us did over 30 days straight when we had a turbine overhaul a few years ago. But we are hourly so after 8 it’s 1.5 rate. Weekends pay 2.25 rate start to finish. It’s rough at the time, but you bust ass for a month and make some decent money then go back to a straight 40.

The max line speed was around 85 lugs a minute and took 8 people to operate. The new line is fully automated and is already running at 115 lugs a minute after just 24 hours and takes a single operator.

It's also worth noting that here in the south, we never have to lay anyone off after these upgrades. We are usually operating so shorthanded that it just frees up resources to fill other positions. We have been trying to fill 24 new positions at this particular facility for over 14 months now and are still only at 18. We have run 21 job fairs that attracted more than 1400 interested parties, we offered employment to over 185 applicants and 124 accepted. Less than 80 actually showed up but less than 35 made it past the first week and various other infractions whittled us down to the remaining 18 that actually stuck it out.

It's not rocket science, we actually pay well but it's a hot, sweaty, noisy, chitty job that people today don't have to do. There are so many better jobs out there, we pretty much only attract people that can't work anywhere else.

There was a point a few years back where the old owners of these mills actually started hiring ex-cons. That was a fun experiment.

Sometimes I take some days off without claiming them. And this week I have been working 6hr days after working a 21hr shift. Enjoying what you do helps too.

I am surprised the ex-con's didn't work out. I have heard from a few people that the ex-cons are some of there best workers they have had and the tax breaks are great.

Same here and likely for the same reasons.

Life was good here under the old regime but our company has extremely high expectations of safety, performance, attendance and conduct.
We also drug test.

We tested the entire second shift at one of our facilities and 14 out of 18 failed, including the shift supervisor. We tested because the previous night they had stopped for their dinner break and proceeded to throw a party in the parking lot with weed and alcohol. And within view of no less than 3 cameras.

And that right there is the biggest problem. How much do I have to pay you to work beside guys like that?

I work that much, they only work 40-48 hours a week, get good benefits and lot's of OT.

Idk what you guys do But even factory or plant I have been in the last 5 years safety has doubled in. It kinda sucks and makes it even harder to do a job. No one will even say your being too safe so there no line or bar It just keeps get higher with even new and great idea...

I work at a power plant.
3/4 of the day safety, 1/4 the day production.
Sometimes I think to much is what causes mistakes. Nobody likes to be hurt or see someone get hurt.
In the end it's common sense but a lot of folks lack that also. Lol

Ah Boyer. The old drug test conundrum. We get randoms at my place as well. Thankfully we are operators and as long as the lights stay on we don’t have to keep up with a daily production schedule.

Boilers run-turbine spins- generator makes electricity- no one complains and we stay behind the curtain......Have a blackout and you’re in the spotlight.

Thanks, I golfed for 2 years when I was 15-17, then I took off 38 years from it...lol, till now. Now that Im getting old its kinda relaxing and fun with some friends. Especially here in the desert where everything is brown/tan, its a nice change to look at all green and smell the grass for a few hours..lol
