This is a square nose hull i got cheap. Will be somewhat of a beater, I'll probably spray bomb it with epoxy appliance paint, so definitely doesn't need to be perfect, but I'd like it to be halfway decent.

It looks like it was damaged and repaired, it's reinforced inside and out, seems pretty solid, but this has a pretty coarse surface finish.

Can I just smooth the whole thing out with thickened epoxy, or will that be too thick and crack? Is there some kind if fabric/matt that I should put on there first to hide the course weave 20190424_142650.jpg 20190424_142642.jpg ?

Looking at the picture, that repair does not look like it bonded well. The material looks starved for resin. I would seriously try to peel it off, if it delaminates easily save yourself time and get a grinder and repair it yourself. Once that is done finishing with micro balloons or light weight fill will get you a finished look.

I will do some poking and prying to evaluate how well it's on there, but the pictures might be a little deceiving because somebody has sanded it quite a bit already, so I think it looks drier than it is.

I agree, that doesn't look bonded well. The yellow color to the resin appears to be polyester resin. which will peal right off of a SMC hull if you can get a screwdriver behind it.
