Stator - 4 wire vs 5 wire compatability

I bought a 89 Kawasaki 650 sx that needed a new engine as it had catastrophic failure. My new engine came in and it has a four wire stator. My current set up has a five wire stator that is bad. Can a 4 wire stator be used? From what I can tell the fifth wire is an "extra ground". If so which ground should I use for the hookup? if its a second ground can I just tie it into the CDI box ground? Hoping I don't have to spend another $100 plus on a 5 wire stator. Thank you in advance for your replies.

I'd just swap the 5 wire stator and flywheel I from the old engine to the new engine..

My five wire stator is toast. It shorted and burn out so I need to replace it and was hoping I could make the four wire work.

Yes is the answer. You just have to understand different colored wires.

Yellow two in a 5 wire are the charging wires (blk red in a 4 wire)

Black/red is the trigger/pulser wire in the 5 (purple in the 4)

Black/yellow and yellow are both earth in the 5. (No black on 4 wire. It is bolted to the engine and considered earth according to the diagram).

Note, some regulators come with even another set of colored wires just to confuse us all.

Sorry to dig up old news, but I'm having the same dilemma. If the black wire on the 4 wire stator is a ground and you're installing the 4 wire stator onto a 5 wire system, what do you do with the black lead on the rectifier that would normally accept that wire? Ground it?

I have the same question, when i opened the electrical box on my 89 650sx i had one black wire unhooked coming out of the voltage rectifier. what do I do with it? The ski was running correctly before, i was just taking this appart to change the gasket.

I’d leave well enough alone then.. was working fine,
Just change your gasket
