New to skis, need some help

Well bought an 88 js440 tonight after looking for a running one for quite a while. Have a couple questions though.

First is it seems to only start on the choke, after cranking for quite a while, it'll start and immediatly rpms go up and if you try and push in the choke it will die. Ive only done this a couple times, but im not sure if thats bad gas or what it could be. Second would be what premix to run. Do you run premix or is it oil injected? Im sure theres more but its late and i can't really work on it much more right now.

440s are all premix and 40:1 is a proper ratio.

What do, you mean " the rpms will immediately go up"? Does it free rev without input from the throttle? All of the symptoms sound like a lean condition possibly due to an air leak.

Like it starts and the rpms seem way to high considering theres no input from the throttle. Granted the chokes all the way on, and its only ever been running for a couple of seconds so its hard to tell.

like WOT? or just revs a little higher?

-rebuild/clean carb
-replace fuel filter
-buy lanyard style start/stop
-check compression

Ill pull the carb and replace the fuel filter. Its not WOT, but i guess i was still worried. Compression was 135 and 150.

Also, would the jetting of the carb need to be changed if there is an aftermarket pipe on it? It doesnt seem like the stock pipe, so if I open the carb up I could keep an eye out for that.

An air leak in the fuel system or intake will cause RPM's to climb as the mixture leans out. I would pull and clean the carbs. Be careful not to change the pop-off pressure (ie: keep original springs etc). If you don't want to go that far yet, replace the fuel lines and watch for air bubbles in the lines. On a 2-stroke and exhaust leak can also lean out the engine... check the exhaust as well.
