have a 1980 JS 440 i just bought, guy was selling it because it was having a problem with the starter not engaging and just free spinning, messed with it a little bit when i got it home and got it engaging (most of the time) randomly free spins and doesn't grab fly wheel.
Anyways poured some gas down the carb and i heard it fire so i know it runs.
In the process of rebuilding carb now and hopefully it will run good with some tuning all new fuel lines also.
My question is dose this motor seem like its set up okay or is it just a bunch of aftermarket parts bolted on it.

It has:
ocean pro gas cap block off
Ocean pro original exhaust location block off.
Finger throttle
Quick steer
O degree bars

Engine:
Ocean pro intake manifold.
Ocean pro flame arrestor
L S exhaust manifold
West cost exhaust and cone and exit pipe
Some AM water box

Thanks for any help on if this is a decent set up engine or no and what to expect.

It’s definitely going to benefit from an a/m exhaust. You’ll want to find out what prop it has. If it’s stock then that’s no bueno. A scat 15 would be ideal.

So quick update on whats going on.

I found that the new fuel lines the previous owner put on had the realy mixed up and carb (bn44) was pretty nast inside. I fixed the fuel lines and went through the carb and got it running, but not running good. I had to ajust the carb 2 turns out on low speed and pilot jet to get it to rev up and run okay. Still a pain in the ass to start though, did some more research and found out that if revlimiter is removed (it is) that it needs a fuel restrictor in the fuel line so i put a 0.035 welding tipe in return line but battery was dead so havent got the chance to see what happens. Also think i might have a a 550 top end on it and head work. Its reading about 175 each cylinder. Just trying to get it running good enough to get it on the warter and tune it.

all 550 sound good out of water.
different story once in it though.

Yea i know but ithink i can get it runnibg okay in water with carb ajustments. If not im going to try and keep my eye out for a bn38. From what i hear from people its a awsome carb thats easy to tune and alot of the guys ran them on there super stock 440s back in the day
