dont allow yourself to get close to 50

i turn 50 in may and i am shocked at how fast things have gone downhill the last 2 years. i rode today in decent sized (chest?) surf and got my ass handed to me cardio wise. i was sucking wind and struggling to be in charge of the ski after 20 minutes. my strength has fallen off a cliff, my back kills me anytime i lift anything heavier than my own hand and after having the metabolsim of an hyper 8 year old, i can now literally think about sweet potato pie and gain weight.

i do 30-35-40 pushups and curl 50 lbs 20-22-25 times every other day and average 15-20 miles of jogging a week and when i waved at yamaslut today as he drove past, my triceps shook like an old lady yelling bingo.

this sport is for the young guns. i see a sit down in my near future.

seriously, find an unsecured 8th story window once you hit 48....

I just turned 42 and can't believe how fast my eyesight is going. I first noticed it about 6 years ago and was losing about an inch of focus a year. I lost about 12 inches in the last year and now need to wear 1.5 readers to focus on anything closer than 18 inches.

Ha ha, I feel your pain! Turned 56 a couple of weeks ago. I have to work twice as hard to maintain even somewhat the same level of fitness. I keep riding with the young guns and let them push me and keep me on my toes. Never surrender !! Stop talking like a little girl and ride on!!

48 and change here, I still play ice hockey twice a week year round, the shifts get shorter, the pain last longer. As for the ski, the friends I have made, and the dinner after we ride, keeps me going!

I know what you mean, I'am 51 in March. I cerlibrated my 50th at the Pismo free ride last year. What tripped me out the most was relalizing my mortality, when I was younger I never thought about it. Seemed like life went on forever and I was indistrutable. Now my life's 2/3 over and I ache all over lol. GOD willing I'am no where near ready to put up my ski

I'm a few years behind you but I feel the pain every day but keep pushing myself. If I take even a week off from running it takes forever to get back to where I was. I'm going to keep riding as long as I'm physically and financially able.

@surfjunkie . Just curious how long it had been....like since you rode surf...like say 2-3 times per week?

Just curious because I know all the cardio workouts don't seem to work for riding in surf. IMO it is different muscles or something and different cardio rhythms maybe??? I know I feel winded in surf unless I ride surf often.

I am right behind you guys though! :)

2 years ago i was riding 3 days a week. I was unaware of a condition that lead to a back injury at 28 years old. I had times where I began to doubt my long term ability to walk or hold a job, much less ride a jet ski. I was pretty disappointed to watch pat bogart from the shore as he was throwing down combos in his 50s. People who were less physical who had practices less than i destroying me on the course because I just couldn't any more.

As I improved, I began to value some little things I didn't value before. TaAkig my wife for walks on the beach or hoping I could take my future kids to Disney without a wheel chair. I think you guys should appreciate you can ride well at all at 50. I try to save my pity for people with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, etc. a lot of you 50 year olds can out ride me these days and not for a lack of effort on my part.

I know the thread is banter about frustrations, but don't forget to value what you do have.

The last time I got pulled over on a ski I was 53. As the Nice young man was writing me a ticket for the fifty foot rule and telling me how dangerous it was to BR of yacht wakes. I took my helmet off and He looked at me and actually said "You are to old for these shenanigans"
HaHa joke was him I just went in grabbed a FW ski and went out ripped some Rolls 50 ft from him
Im thankful every day that I can still do the things I want to do and not be sitting on the couch getting fat and bitter

i think lay off is part of it because i had been broke down for about two months then had one short ride the week before, then yesterday. but if i ride consistently my tendonitis in my forearms ramps up. damned either way :)

I went through the same thing last year. I hope I can ride at 50.
I really hope they find a way to replace disc nucleus in the future since mine seems to have wanted to squirt out.

There is science developing for artificial disc replacements. Soon they should be able to replace a disc like the replace a knee, hip or shoulder. Such replacements are contraindicated in cases of spondylolisthesis or etc.
