DISCONTINUING THE SUPERJET????

I'd love a modern 4 stroke SJ if it stays close to the current hull. Lots of good points in this thread. The Superjet is grandfathered in-pollution rules for boats are different than cars...fleet averages are allowed and the reason the pre emissions 701 can be sold (or was sold for so long) are the many Couches with four strokes...the tiny sales of the standup didn't contribute much to the total even if two strokes are messy.

Bonus is that a 701 two stroke is like a Harley or a SBC Chevy. A basic machine shop can keep most things going, and you can build a Harley or SBC out of parts made by a hundred companies, none of which are the designers.

Someone said you aren't riding a 1996 dirt bike...true. I'd buy a 4s SJ if it doesn't go all "stand about". The 440/550 was amazing because it was light, not because of the ability to sink or the bilge pump engine.

No new 2020 SJ as expected. But at least they are extending the 19 models over to 20 instead of killing it all together.

The graphic layout has changed twice since 08 and the color scheme usually changes every 2 years. I agree with Ross though, this would be a third year in a row of the blue/green which may be a bad sign. I also noticed the MSRP went up from $8499 to $8,699 on the main page.

FYI
  • 2008 - 2009 SuperJets are blue with white graphics.
  • 2010 - 2011 SuperJets are blue with redesigned white graphics.
  • 2012 - 2013 SuperJets are a new black color with orange graphics.
  • 2014, the SuperJet is back in black again, this time with blue graphics.
  • 2015 SuperJets retain the same black and blue graphics from the previous year.
  • 2016, the SuperJets are available in two new color options: Pure White with Orange & Blue or Pure White with Black. This is the first time the main body color has been white since 1997.
  • For 2017, the SuperJet SJ700BS is available in the same 2016 colors: Pure White with Orange & Blue or Pure White with Black.
  • For 2018, the SuperJet SJ700BT is available in an all new color: Pure White with Blue & Green stripes.
  • For 2019, the SuperJet SJ700BU is available in the same 2018 colors: Pure White with Blue & Green stripes.
  • For 2020, the SuperJet SJ700BV is available in the same 2018-2019 colors: Pure White with Blue & Green stripes.

From John Havell today :

" I am in the Bahamas for the Yamaha dealer show 2020 is the last year they will have the regular super jet. in 2021 they will have a new four stroke super jet, they don't have pictures of it or anything but I am assuming it's going to be like what they are racing like what the Skellet's have been racing."

interesting. My guy Wade builds all their boats and he mentioned something about potentially a carbon hull with a TR1... bare minimum it will need to compete with the SXR. Turbo might be an option on the table... but this is more than likely the last year for the superjet as we know it.

Glad to see it does live on another year, unchanged. Same color as 2019 (White with blue). MSRP increased from $8499 to $8699.

I just updated the Wikipedia article, I see some info from it copy/pasted above by Goldfishnado.

Interesting info from Freakrider / John Havell. I do wish they would keep the original SJ alongside a new one, either there is still enough demand for the 2T or they are continuing the current model until a new one is ready. We've been hearing rumors of a four stroke for several years now. I'm keeping fingers crossed there will be a new one though and it isn't just killed off like the SXR in 2011.

This thread always makes me smile with the amount of hearsay, keep it coming guys. I heard the 2021 model is going to go old school and have a steam engine in it. Yamaha won't compete with Kawa for speed, but rather torque to dominate the long distance races.

Will it be oil or coal fired?

It depends who you ask, originally I assumed they were going all the way back really OLD school and go wood burning but since it will be the 2021 model, I'd assume the more modern oil fired method. That way they can sell Yamalube 2 cycle AND the new fuel oil for steam engines. My cousin's neighbor works at a dealership and he said they are going coal if Trump gets reelected next year so we'll see.

Most of them have already been sold I think. They are almost antiques in the racing world these days, even seen a few of them dip into the low 5K range. Sad because they were/are so much fun to ride. I love mine still but it just does not get ridden ever.

When (if) that new superjet comes out, I'll be one of the first in line up here waiting for one.

I’m ready. It’s perfect for those of us who can afford a GP1 or ProForce. If the rumors are true and it’s the GP1 bottom then we are in for a treat. Add forced induction with great handling and we can all up our game.
