Freestylefest 2012 will be held on September 29th.

  • Saturday, September 29 at Bolles Harbor in Monroe, MI. (AKA "The Hothole")

For those that dont know, the Hothole is a small area of water that the powerplant empties there cooling water into. This keeps it unseasonably warm through cold weather. This is usually one of the last chances to ride in Michigan. Last year it was in the 40s and we were still out there staying warm.

Freestylefest is all about meeting new people, talking about riding and maybe learning from the experience. And above all... having fun.

I'm sure there will be a couple boats at the hothole for us to do some wake jumping as there is every year. Just remember to be safe.

DIRECTIONS
On the October 1st we will ride the Hothole in Monroe, Michigan:fing02:
Take 75 to the Laplaisance Rd. exit (#11). From there go straight across Laplaisance Rd. onto Waters Edge Dr. Follow that back to the parking lot and that is where we all put the skis in. From there just ride out of the no wake zone into Lake Erie and stay far far far away from the edge because of real thick seaweed, and then go straight into the Hothole. (DO NOT cut the corner, you will bottom out!!!) You can't miss the tall powerplant tower.

There's a launch on the River Raisin, just at the edge of the no wake zone. It's a bit of a ride, but it's the next closest I believe.

Wow, that's a kick in the balls with the harbor closed. There use to be a way you could launch off of dunbar road, but I think illegal now, plus I'm sure the water is way too low with the drought. State park is further way especially with the no wake to get out. Once we got a camping site and toted our ski down to to beach.

I did some checking and the launch that I use on the River Raisin is called the River Raisin Marina, its a small campground right at the end of the annoying no-wake zone. I mapped out the route from Bolles Harbor and it's 0.3 Miles of no-wake / 2.7 Miles total to the Hot Spot. From the River Raisin Marina, its 0.2 Miles of no-wake, and a total of 4.1 miles to the Hot Spot. Not too far off I think. Last time I was there, it was $5 to launch, payable to the drunk guy at the picnic table.

I wouldn't recommend launching there... Not a good part of town to be leaving your trucks & trailers plus there probably isn't room for everyone there to park anyways. It's not really a "camprground", more of a small marina to dock your boat overnite. Not to mention all the DNR & Sheriff traffic in there. They will have a field day with us. I have a phone number for the person who owns the island in the back of the Hot Hole by the Expressway and the island can be rented for the day. It has a launch, room to park, etc... and you won't have to worry about getting your stuff ripped off. I'll text it to Sammy today so he can check on details.

Good deal Mike. I've never had a problem parking my truck / trailer there, camped there several times over the last few years. I was just suggesting it as an alternate launch since it looks like Bolles is done for the season.

Ok so here is the deal...I contacted the owner of Doglady Island off of East Dunbar Road and explained to him our situation. He agreed to give us access to his island on Saturday September 29th so that we can launch our skis there for the day for $150 for the group. I told him that I would bring it up to the group to gauge the interest in the event. Historically there has been anywhere for 10 to 30 riders at this freeride, therefore, I suggest we take a roll call of who would attend this ride and make it so that each person must pay a $10 launch access fee to help cover the costs.

Also we will have to ensure that we lock the gate after all are in attendance at the island that have contributed to this ride. From there we can launch and head over to the normal riding location on the peninsula.

I have included a link to the map below with the location of where the launch point will be:

If anyone has any other suggestions please let me know as I am open to them.

Thanks,
Sammy
