Other How Safe (relatively) is Stand Up Racing?

I race motocross and it has put a beating on my body. Too many concussions and broken bones. I'm 24 and am trying to preserve my body for the later years haha.

The only problem is I LOVE racing.

My stand up riding skill level is about average and I was thinking about getting into racing them. Wanted to get some thoughts from guys who race on how often people are getting injured at events you go to. I'd love to hear from people who have raced both moto and stand ups.

I know any motor racing comes with its risks, just want to get a feel for what you guys see racing PWCs.

Thanks!

Like you said, All racing comes with a degree of risk. But in all my years of racing PWC
Standup are about as safe as it gets! Sure, I have seen my fair share of injuries. But comparing stand-ups, to sport or runabouts? The type of injuries are far less life threatening.

You are also on a very good lake to find training partners. The Hayes family up in Dawsonville , have training days almost every Sunday. They are mainly Sport class based, but also run standups. There is also a good crew over on Allatoona. Feel free to PM me or call the number in my sig block, Im happy to put you in touch with them.

Ski ya, Paul

Yes!! More Georgia guys to race with! Hit me and or Paul up and let’s get you on the starting line. Myself and Dustin Higdon (a former MotoX Guy) also organize practice days in Chattanooga with big courses and about 30 skis. Paul can give you all the advice you need. Hope to see you out there!

Thanks Paul! I actually don't have any money for a ski at the moment. It will probably be about a year before I can save up for one. But thanks for the info!

I raced for almost 10 years. Only got hit twice. Once in practice, small chip in paint and then years later in a race, got used as a berm in a turn........ I did land half way on someone once in a surf race and again at the APBA Nationals, Racer got bumped and turned in front of me, could not avoid him. think he got a few stitches in his head.

The thing I say about racing stand-up is that the scariest part and most dangerous is when your heading into the top bouy together. Probably the same as any sport the first braking zone or where you all sort out positions is the hardest. In stand up racing to actually be at the top corner first or in the top bunch you need to be ble to ride and ride well. So at least you know the guy beside you is capable of making the turn as well. Runabouts is not the same you can grab the throttle and be there with everyone else. From then on you tend to spread out and hardly is there more than two battling at the same time. I think its the safest form of Motorsport and this is why my boy is going to be racing. Hey when it all goes wrong you get a surprise swim not a broken collar bone, Im ok with that

Kind of rehashing what other people said on a month old thread but...

Racing stand ups will likely be much less hard on your body than motocross. Literally everyone I ride with (30-60 year olds) hung up their MX boots for stand up racing and actually liked it more.

When I rode motoX (very slowly) I ended that with a back surgery. Not due to the dirt bikes exactly, but sure they didn't help.
Only one knee surgery because of stand ups, and that was a torn meniscus from a stupid n00b mistake at my first World Finals race.

I'm 31 and while love the idea of riding dirt bikes and do miss it, but as soon as I hop on a ski I forget all of that because jet skis are so much more dynamic with the ever-changing water conditions. Nothing beats pulling 3Gs carving a perfect corner, and if you still want to air it out you can get into freestyle. You'll never get bored of this sport so go for it!
