I went from being voraciously hungry, to preferring to work out fasted and eating 1-2 meals a day. Contrary to belief, voluntarily going without food ups metabolism. Human growth hormone and adrenaline kick in after a certain period of fasting, where autophagy begins to clear out old, damaged cells and clean the body. Really fkn amazing science.

And the glorious, homemade real food glorious meals.

The modern food pyramid is licoriceed. It is controlled by lobbying groups (corn, wheat), government subsidies, etc etc etc. Grains are cheap.

Over the last 6 months I have read and consumed 200+ hours of audio books related to diet, fitness, and healthy living. I'm no expert by any means, but I've come to realize the mainstream media and what we've been taught about the 'right' way to eat is backwards. Our bodies are built to eat ketogenicly and fast. Eating 6 meals a day is the result of carbohydrates dominating diet and the proliferation of snacking for the food business to earn more dollars.

Why do you think obesity and diabetes is happening to Americans in epic proportions. And isn't going away. Insulin = fat storage. Carbohydrates hit our insulin system the hardest and aren't even an essential part of the human diet. There is no such thing as an 'essential carb' and our body doesn't require them to live. However, essential fats and proteins are.

Two amazing books I recommend are The Obesity Code and Keto Clarity. They will really open your eyes to the state of human health in the modern world.

Keto and fasting aren't just for weight loss. The control appetite - no longer get 'hangry' and you burn fat for fuel. Talk about stamina! My workouts have improved and most of all I want to improve my stamina on the buoy course. Carbs give small bursts of energy because we can store very little, but our body's fat storage is thousands of times larger.

Oh and the food is so. damn. tasty.

It works. I was 155 on the left, 134 a few days ago on the right.

Id be so Hangry. How do you control the Hangry during the work day?
I used to get so hangry. I literally could think about nothing but food on stressful days.

Give up carbs (sugars) and burn fat.

There is a transitional period where your body will crave carbs since that is all it has even known. But after a while in pursuit of the keto diet the body will stop burning carb/sugar energy and switch to fat energy. The body has tons of fat energy storage so when you don't eat you don't get all that hungry. Insulin stabilizes since fats do not trigger insulin release as much as carbs, blood sugar spikes and falls go away...and the hangries go away.

Pretty simple science really. I love learning about the process!

I'm on the P90x plan.

Pizza, 90 oz of beer, and x amount of hours sitting on my ass. Lol

Seriously though, good work Ashley im a little more inspired to try a better diet and training plan this year.

Nice results, keto works I have lost 23 lbs since Jan 8th. Agree with everything you have found. My only gripe is during lifting it gets darn near impossible to 5x5's, so limited to 3 sets per lift. No glycogen stores. Keep up the good work!

Awesome to hear you are having some great results!

I went Keto and also followed time restricted eating (only consuming things other than water in an 8-10hr window) for just over 5 weeks last year and I really enjoyed it. Went from around 180lbs to 160lbs in just shy of 3 weeks and stabilized there. No crazy hunger all of time, much more awake and aware throughout the day and I really enjoyed the food. I also noticed and improvement in endurance on my ski, for MTBing and dirtbike enduros... Overall it was a great experience.

Big challenges for me were no beer, not being able to just eat whatever (inconvenience) and needing to cut out high carb foods I really liked. For beer I tried switching to Bud select (really low carb) but then I realized I was drinking like 12 of them to get anywhere... I wasn't about stop drinking, and found whiskey & water with some lime to be my new drink. But in the end, convenience and the love for many high carb foods ended up being the downfall for full time keto, however I still go in and out keto sometimes and definitely reduced my overall carb intake. I have also stuck with the time restricted eating best I can, and fast periodically. BTW my weight only climbed up 5lbs since I stopped Keto and that was many months ago...

I highly recommend listening to Dr. Rhonda Patrick's pod casts if you want to get deep into the science behind keto and other insights into diet and nutrition.

After reading this thread and talking to a few buddies, I decided to give the keto a go around the middle of January. After attending the Daytona freeride and being completely ashamed of my lack of fitness, I knew I had to do something. So far I've lost 14lbs from 196 to 182 and feel the best I have in years. Having just turned 44, I thought it would be impossible to shed those unwanted pounds. Its actually been pretty easy, but I'm also not a picky eater. I also incorporate a moderate push-up and sit-up session each day to better prepare myself for ripping around that tank of a ski I ride. I'm going to plug away until I reach 175 and then see if I need a slice of cake or bowl of ice cream. :)

After eating this bread and talking to a few buddies, I decided to give the barrel roll a go around the middle of January. After attending the Daytona freeride and being completely ashamed of my lack of barrel rolls, I knew I had to do something. So far I've lost 14lbs from 196 to 182 and still detonate the best I have in years. Having just turned 44 (which is a carb I cannot tune) , I thought it would be impossible to shred those barrel rolls. Its actually been pretty hard, but I'm also not a picky barrel roller. I also incorporate a moderate push-up and sit-up roll each day to better prepare my rolls for ripping around that barrel of a ski I ride. I'm going to plug away until I reach 175 and then see if I need a slice of cake or bowl of lice cream to cheer me up after I barrel flop. :)

Well said!! I didn’t know you were so passionate about barrel rolls :p

I've been doing 5x5s 3-5 times a week lately and have really seen improvement in the last month. I've increased my squat by 40lbs, biggest thing for me was lowering my cardio workouts and focusing on the weights. I also increased my fat macros so that probably has something to do with it too.

Keto on my friends!

Since the Daytona Freeride, I've replaced my lunch with a Slim Fast shake and started running 3 or 4 times a week. I was 205-210lbs depending on the day, currently I'm sitting at about 192-194lbs. I just broke through the 5 mile barrier, pushing for 8 miles now.

I've kept the same breakfast for the last few years. 2-3 cups of Black Coffee in the morning, one yogurt, and one granola bar. Approx 250 calories + 180 cal Slim Fast = approx 400 calories before dinner. Running 5 miles is about 800 calories at my current pace. I haven't changed any other eating habit. I still drink 1-5 beers a night...god I love beer. My goal is 180lbs. Then I can say I took another 30 pounds off of my SXR!

Regardless of what diet, you're just playing the input output game of calories. Some diets may help break through plateaus, but in the end our fat @sses just need to work out more and burn calories. Eat a balanced diet, walk your dog, buy a push mower, rake the yard instead of leaf blow, do 30 pushups when you wake up, take the stairs, park farther away, ride your bike to work, and empty the house of all the crap food! Of course you're going to lose lots of weight if you fast, zero calorie intake.

Go watch a movie from the 1970s and marvel at how skinny everyone is. I've always wondered how people get so fat. I freaked out when I broke 200lbs. There's a point where they had to buy new clothes and abandon their old sizes....I refuse to EVER do that. My goal is to fit into the same cargo shorts I wore in 1997(7th grade), yeah I still have a pair from Old Navy.

Congrats!

An interesting book to read regarding the calories in vs calories out model is The Obesity Code. It works for some, but it usually ends in yoyo dieting and ultimately the weight is gained back within a few years. Also delves into the government's subsidies of wheats, corn, etc and how that negatively affects the American diet & the obesity epidemic. Very enlightening read (or listen, I love Audible!)

There is a lot more to keto and fasting then just weight loss.

Couple podcasts to listen to when you are running:

Every diet in the end is you counting calories, they just mask it in some other way. Cut out X, eat more of why Y, and you can still eat Z.

I don't need a podcast, and I only work out to Techno music these days.

I totally agree with the subsidies of wheat, corn, and dairy. Corn is in everything these days. It also doesn't help that people have gotten less and less active. It probably started with Cable TV in the early 80s when they switched from real Sugar to corn syrup in damn near everything. Now we have the internet, Uber, home delivery for everything. Amazon is playing in a role in it to, no more parking and walking into to an actual store, it's just at my door step in 2 days.

If you are an intelligent individual with any sort of accountability - calories in vs calories out can produce results. But every 'body' reacts differently to different stimulus.

First, where that model is flawed is when people drop calories too low and the body's basil metabolic rate drops and goes into 'starvation mode'.

Second, there are other factors that affect how the body burns said calories. Here is where intermittent fasting comes in to play. Beyond 16-24hrs without food stimulus the body increases metabolism, HGH increases, adrenaline increases - more calories are burned. But the great part if intermittent fasting is you do not reduce caloric intake. Many people do OMAD (one meal a day) that contains 1800-2500 calories. Fat burn and weight loss without caloric deficiency. I won't harp on the mental part of IF, but it feels amazing!

Third, kind of looping back to the main point of being a smart individual, is 100 calories of a cookie is vastly different than 100 calories of olive oil. A cookies's 100 calories is from empty sugar and carbs. It spikes insulin, which spikes fat storage. Also the body can't do much with those 100 cookie carbs. Not to mention the negative affect of the dopamine high and then low from the cookie and cravings for more. The 100 calories of the olive oil is 100% fat, and fat does not trigger a strong insulin response from the body = less fat storage. That in a nutshell is the key to weight loss on a high-fat low-carb keto diet. But as Quinc mentioned, there are far more benefits to IF and keto than weight loss.

Every person is different and no diet is perfect. I'm not necessarily against the calorie deficit diet all together, it can produce results. But the calories in vs out model has many, many flaws and it isn't the most 'healthy' option depending on what types of food the individual chooses to eat. Keto naturally takes out processed foods and that in itself is a huge step in the right direction.
