Wear Ring Information

'Wear ring' is a bit inaccurate or misleading term. The OEM 'wear ring' is made of cast aluminum with a very thin stainless steel liner. The liners actually wear very little (if at all). It is the outside edge of the impeller that wears when sand, shells, dirt, trash, etc. are run through the pump. The wear ring should not touch the impeller at all. Yamaha calls it an 'impeller housing.’

OEM wear rings are reliable, and offer great performance, but they are pricey to replace, and will fail over time with saltwater, and even occasionally freshwater usage. Oem wear rings fail from the Galvanic corrosion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_corrosion) which occurs between the aluminum housing and the stainless liner, causing the thin liner to swell and collapse into the impeller. Oem wear rings used in saltwater will always swell and fail, sometimes quickly. Inspection will reveal high spots rubbed by the impeller, and the impeller edges will have rough hangers on the edges. In an assembled ski, you can listen carefully just after shutting off your motor for the 'ding, ding, ding' of the impeller grinding on the wear ring. (ski must be out of the water and pump clear of all sand.) The impeller should never touch in an oem wear ring, if it does, then it is bad.

The Solas all SS wear ring is a 'forever' wear ring because the solid all stainless steel constuction won't ever go bad.

A/M wear rings with replaceable plastic liners are true 'wear rings.' The liners will wear as sand, etc. is passed through the pump. Are they better or worse? Advantages include lower cost, much lower impeller wear, and no issues with corrosion in saltwater. Disadvantages are once the liner wears too much, then your pump performance will suffer, so periodic liner replacement is required.

If you ride salt alot and also the type to run lots of sand, etc. through your pump, then a/m wear ring may be a good choice both to protect impeller and to lower costs.

Both WSM and SBT make wear rings with replaceable plastic liners. We prefer the nicer casting and also nicer liner of the SBT.

MAG Pump Information



OEM 144mm Yamaha pump vane section was designed in 1990 when Yamaha introduced their 'powerhouse' 650cc motor in the superjet and WR3. It was never changed or improved when they introduced the 61x/sgl carb 701 motor in 1994 or the 62t/61x dual carb motor in 1996. Same pump (except water siphon bilge fitting changes) is in all supejets from 1990-2020.

In 2008, yamaha redesigned the SJ hull bottom for better hookup by changing the pump intake area and by lengthening the driveshaft and moving the whole pump body back by 2". This setback of the whole pump is not be confused with the setback stator vanes within a 'setback' mag pump. This improved hookup but still didn't change the original pump design. While it is super impressive that the oem pump designed for an anemic 650 will still work for with a ported 701/760 with a bpipe/etc. It also isn't an optimal setup for freestyle performance especially with larger and ported motors.

MAG pumps and impellers have bigger hubs to increase the pressure and the power of the thrust out of and through the pump. They also have more veins which are redesigned and thinner (stainless vs cast aluminum) so they straighten the water flow better. The oem stock pump has 6 long thick aluminum vanes while most mag pumps like the skat and solas have 12 shorter, thinner SS vanes.

MAG pumps also will produce thrust even with less than optimal water flow, which is most of the time when you are riding. Another big difference is how quickly the MAG pump will rehookup when you land. When you ride in choppy water, it is amazing the difference.
