I'm dying here. Where did it go?

Due to server load, security issues, and how some people were using it, I took it down.
I'd rather not go through the site being hacked again, it takes way too much of my time to fix it.

I thought that ever since the shout box started there were a lot less threads. Maybe it was that or maybe it was that more people are back on pwctoday. :dunno:

hrm, you can't tell what server load is going to be like if you don't try it, right? Also, you can have an idea of how it'll be used but some people will surprise you with what they do with a new toy.

Why don't we start a post where users can enter their AIM screen name? Then you can just add them to your list and you're set.

you can already do that in your UserCP - under "edit profile" you can enter AIM, Yahoo, ICQ, MSN & Skype names for yourself.
when you do, on every post you make - there is a little icon in the upper right for each one that you enter.

Oh I know this, I just meant we could have a sticky post in case someone wanted to just scroll down and find everyone's AIM screen name quickly.

There needs to be a AIM set chat or something. I know you can make a room, but can you make it so you can get into it anytime? Like have someones computer 'host' the room then others can come and go as they please? :dunno:

No. You can only invite folks to your chat room. Its not like an all the time hosting thing. Even in Yahoo! Chat I don't think you can keep a custom room open forever. Once the originator logs off it drops the room. Or it used to anyway.

There used to be an ICQ chat box thing a few years back I used, it ran on a mIRC channel and was just a java chat. Wasn't anything fancy but hell, we were using a shoutbox to chat....

No 'one' person ruined it for anyone, it's a combination of everything I stated.
You have to realize that with it on the index page, everyone sees it, and the conversations on there sometimes were not exactly what we want x-h2o to be portrayed as.
Then add in the security issues (you could put malicious html in your shouts possibly), extra server load, and especially the fact that the version I was running is not the 'official' one which actually has much higher server load, it just gave me the willies after all the time I spent recovering from the hacking last month.

The server speed did really suck while that was running....

Well, you've ran this Shoutbox before and had basically the same problems right? I just wondered why you did it again.. Not that i'm complaining. I liked it and even said some bad words on there too. So shame on me also.
Also it might be a bit disturbing for a first timer to the site when the first thing they see is a pics of a dogs A-hole... I do agree it shouldnt be on the front page.
I dont remember anybody posting pics the first time around with the Shoutbox. It is a very cool feature though.
MIRC is such a boring interface.

Well, running with HTML can certainly lead to issues and I was quite surprised all the bells and whistles weren't disabled first to monitor server load with out all that crap.
I also agree that having it on the index page could lead to problems and always thought it should have been part of a subdomain (ie. http://chat.x-h2o.com). Running in sub-domain you can monitor the loads very specifically and isolate problems where they may or may not reside. Another advantage for a sub-domain is you can ban certain users from "chat" but letting them on the regular home page.
I'll say this, I've talked (typed) with many users with that shoutbox and through "chat" you can get a feeling of how some people really are. While posting on the forums is and always will be the best media for tech info or sharing ideas, shoutbox (chat) gets you closer to how someone you never met is like. Its no mystery that many members come across quite different on the forums then they do in real life. IMO: shoutbox cast a light onto more of the real person behind the keyboard.

Here's the dilemma.... I feel as if this might divert traffic from X-h20. Now thats something I really don't want to do. Soooo that's all this is going to be is a chatroom. It's going to be very basic virtually no home page, just a place to chat! :biggthumpup:

I planning on bringing back the flashchat, but in non-integrated mode. The security problem was in how it was integrated into vbulletin.
I have no problem running a chat, just want one that is secure so I don't have to bust my butt to get it running again just so people can bitch and moan about 'for riders by riders', it's still my ass that has to fix the place so everyone can bitch about decisions I make.

You don't get it, it's a completely different version, a different approach, yes it looks the same, but in the backend it's quite a bit different in how it works, so you have to try it out to see how it works with our amount of users online/etc., otherwise you have no idea if it's usable or not.

Yup, you can't please everybody all of the time. You could give some people a job eating ice cream in the shade and they would bitch about the flavor. Hey Darin,
I believe we all apreciate what you do here and if I had any computer skills what so ever I would offer my help. If you decide this shoutbox is not for X-H20 then we will deal with it and if we want one we will work it another way. This is an awesome network of many different types of people with simular intrests and its AWESOME for that reason. And how people react to a situation like this is just that a reaction and I am sure not personal towards you in any way. I think SJ113 is trying to help more than to cratique your actions. Bottom line is we know you get frusterated with this at times but still keep it going for us and it is MUCH apretiated. THANKS DARIN.
Some of these guys who come off as complaining are some of the reason this site is AWESOME.

Yeah, thanks Darin. It takes a lot to keep any site up and running. Let alone fight off the dumba$$ hacker trying to kill all your hard work. As an IT guy, I totally sympathize. As much as I liked the shoutbox, I'll abide to your decision. X is your baby and you should have the say. If you bring back the shout using a different software package thats cool. I agree we should make it a menu option or subdomain. Makes it not so visible to visitors.

Yeah, it may be the teeth pic. that caused it, but it was worth it. Here in TN we dont see that many nice teeth total at a Kenny Chesney concert. :haha:
