Check this out, a engine with round pistons:

Interesting.

It's in Dutch in case anyone uses babelfish.altavista.com to translate.

...pretty cool. I love experimental stuff that makes it.

it's a wenkle (rotery) engine.

its not experimental, go to www.howstuffworks.com and look at the rotary engine under "car stuff".... the Mazda or Nissan RX-8 has a rotary engine

the old rx-7s had the rotary wenkel engine too.....

it's not a rotary, rotors look like triangles

They refer to the "superball" or something like that. Is it some kind of barrel shaped piston that rolls around and makes compression at different points of the compartment? Maybe it works kind of like one of those scroll compressors for HVAC. Just thinking outloud here??? Anyone??

Trying to read the babelfish translation. Something about bulbous pistons made to swerve by ceramic balls in grooves, passing by poors "ports"? It does sound kind of like how the scroll compressors work except kind of in an inverse fashion using rounded surfaces to squeeze the fuel / air mixture into a small area and then ignite it to send the ball rolling around again. Also something about three sizes of displacement by using bigger balls and chamber sizes. Huh, I guess having bigger balls does produce more power:clown: I wonder if the 1280cc can be fitted into a SJ hull?? What about it Tom?

there seem to be a few other of these non-traditional engines.

this is an interesting one:

Yeah, maybe you should out that page. Rotarys have NOTHING to do with a ball. It's all triangles rolling in a weird shaped chamber.

Hey if its got triangles wave demon will be all over that.

There was an engine years ago featured in the aviation magazines called the dyna-cam engine. It had numerous small pistons set up in a crankcase that looked like a revolver, and a sister bank connected at a 45 degree angle. The gist on that engine was that it was quiet, nearly vibration free, and had a torque curve as straight as an arrow. Never made it to market as far as I know.
The ball engine here in this thread looks neat. It's not a wankel engine, but somewhat near the idea. The wankel engine was great for snowmobiles - especially if you were pulling a tag-along full of kids. The torque on the wankel engine made pulling power like no tomorrow.... Prof

Thats weird......usually rotary engines lack Tq and make up in high revs but with forced induction really ocme alive.
