10-Foot Waves Cause Injuries At Daytona Beach

POSTED: 5:26 pm EDT September 12, 2006
UPDATED: 11:52 pm EDT September 12, 2006

Waves as high at 10 feet at Daytona Beach and surrounding beaches were blamed for injuring several people Tuesday, according to a Local 6 News report.

A strong northeast flow kicked up the rough surf on the east coast prompting warnings for boaters and swimmers.

"There were several injuries associated with these rough seas today," Local 6's Tarik Minor said.

Rizk Nakhleh from Orlando, Fla., broke his ankle and was injured trying to jump a 10-foot wave on his jet ski, the report said.

"We were getting off wave and we just went too high up and could not land it, no way," Nakhleh said. "Once I went up, I couldn't hold on to the jet ski."

Nakhelh said he was lucky to be alive, Minor said.

At New Smyrna Beach, surfers struggled to make it past the shore break and residents gathered on shore to watch the large waves.

"It is beautiful to watch the power of those waves and to think about the moon being the one that pulls the tide," wave watcher Dina Costner said.

Minor reported that the coastline was eroded from Hurricane Florence's onshore flow.

"I have never seen it like this, it is unbelievable," a swimmer told Minor.

"These conditions that we have seen today may be around for some time as Tom Sorrells has been reporting and lifeguards with Tropical Storm Gordon and another new system out there, we will continue to see these conditions for the next couple of days," Minor said.

Small craft advisories will likely remain for the east coast, the report said.

Look's like this may be the best week and a half of surf Florida has seen in a long time with this second storm following Flo

In related news, people reported spotting a goofy looking dude on a yellow ski in trouble in the shore break off Ormond Beach. "The waves were just too big," reported one woman who had to undergo treatment for shock. "He kept on getting flipped upside down. I think he needed a bigger, more stable jet ski."

Other reports confirmed that several older folks were out on the water riding their now obsolete pole skis. This type of ski used to be popular before designers realized that size and weight are important in surf riding conditions, allowing riders to jump but avoid getting thrown upside down and spun around. "If people are going to go out in those conditions, then they should have the latest equipment," observed one bystander.

The pole-ski riders themselves were unavailable for comment since they had been overcome by fear and fatigue when they got back to shore. Many people reported them laughing hysterically, and smacking each other on the back (presumably to help each other cough up the water they inhaled).

Well, they really weren't pole skies, (whatever those are), there was an FX HO and four kawi 800's, (one with a yellow handle pole :Banane01: that lost it's hood, and it's owner refused to let go. the FX got him to shore and retrived his hood). For what it's worth I'm not quite sure where the media get's their info from but, apperantly news channel six was out there filming waves and surfers and over heard a call on the radio from a sanitation officer at Ponce Inlet about a skier who was tending a sprained ankle. That is about as factual as it gets, everything else was hollywood. That's when they pulled up to the slip ramp, screaching tires and all looking for the guy that almost died out there. The only thing that they could not have know was that the sprained ankle was really a broken ankle, and we only found that out today when the guy went to his doctor this morning. We saw some other skiers out there, sporadicly. Several sit downs and towards late afternoon, a couple of stand-ups. The day was slammin, massive waves, plenty of hangtime. Considering we all understood that there was a certain level of risk associated with freeriding, and we went there willingly, as we have done on several occassions at several different locations on FL east coast, we couldn't have asked for a better day. The most fun we had was yanking that reporters chain:cool2: pity we could have used that camera he had out on the water, now that would have been something to talk about. There's a couple more days of bliss out there, if your close and you can make it, you won't regret it. if not there's another tropical deppression coming up Florence's rear in the next couple of weeks. For those that make it out there be safe, for those that have already been, well you already know.

reference to a ww2 movie/documentary and the rough ocean conditions depicted in it....so i've been told.

i've just always seen it in surf reports and got used to using it to describe big burly windblown surf.

Now im not sure if I should bring the SJ or the couch to tow-in at Monster hole. I have someone that wants to trade tow-in but I can't seem to find any other "pole ski" riders. Guess I'll wait to see what it looks like when I get out of work at 2ish.

if you are comfortable on your SJ then I'd go that route....bigger ski's arent as maneuverable when you need to move...

we have seen 15-18 foot faces at ponce inlet (thats where everyones going today), and I talked to Nick and he said it was bigger yesterday...

the waves get to be so big you just stare at them

I am comfortable on my SJ to wave ski and some jumping. I wish I was out of work now I would head up to Ponce Inlet. It was bigger yesterday but the wind was blowing onshore all day. It's a no brainer I'm taking the SJ today and forget about lazy surfing. :Banane09:
