yes, its cheesy but its the only way I could make it work. I have 7 other skis and two are standups. I have rebuilt and replaced motors. I have worked on cars for 15 years as a mechanic, so I have a little skill. I only say this to avoid the same responses of you need to junk that and......... whatever. Nothing here scares me, not even a little.just need a hood and some hardware. the other stuff will come along as I go.

id part it out and keep the hull and find another ski...
probably be better off.
you will spend a long time trying to put that all back together and get nickle and dimed to death when you need something.

09-08-2006, 12:29 AM
this is 98% here. just need a hood and the hardware. some is in the hull still. oh and a battery but I have a few of those. and motor mounts and fuel line. but thats all, nothing else. except some turf, oh and some plugs and a fuel filter, but thats it, thats all I need. nothing else. except some grips, yeah thats the ticket!

good luck.
i have bought a few projects where people took it apart and i tried to put it back together.
not knowing where stuff goes and what bolt is used where got the best of me. i ended up selling that ski.

crap sorry again. aka kane gave me the head sup onhow to do it, heading out to workget it done later.
I have no problem with the hardware its just the gutwrenching feeling that if I had robbed a 7-11 a few weeks earlier I would only be missing the hood and it would still be in one piece.

How much $$$$$ did you give your "friend" for this boat? I just want to keep up and see if its worth it in end?
tom21
09-08-2006, 10:28 AM
shonuff, I was told a lot of "things" by my friend that I got the ski from. it is supposed to have a little shaved off the head, an MSD ignition(maybe), and of course all the stuff you see. can anyone confirm if that is a B pipe? it looks much worse than it is. the motor spins. In fact, if I didn't plan on trying to clean it up, I feel confident that if I had all the hardware I would be riding it tomorrow. provided I had a hood. nothing a good scrubbing and some paint cant fix. Plus I have shonuff's build to use as a guide. I love the way you p[ainted the inside of the hull. first thing I do.

It actually look slike most of the bits are there.
You just might be missing some bolts and such.
Make sure you pull the elec box open + make sure everythting is cool. Replace that gasket while you are in there.
That thing might run out of the box.

also thanks Ollie for moving the pics. I would prefer not to divulge the dollar amount as I had to have this ski after riding yamahahaha's a few weeks ago and seeing the HUGE difference between my stock 650 and his. I am ruined now, I need more power. so dump a ton of money on putting another motor and pipe and impeller on my 92 sj or sell it and my other 6 skis and go to town on one good freestyle ski?

PM's sent. Unreal! and we need to hook up cause I have some friends that ride and we always need more riders!
yeah, the ski will happen pretty quick once I get some work done and clear a little free time.
is it not normal to have 44"s. they came with 38's, right?
cookerq62
09-08-2006, 11:18 AM
Those carbs look like 44's, good deal. I started a build from pretty much scratch but never painted it. It's not that hard get a manual and your set between here and pwc archives. I would consider buying a decent used motor rather then rebuilding that one right now unless your doing pretty much thewhole thing yourself. Was there a prop in that pump??

I feel like I keep saying this, this was a runnig ski almost yesterday, it was disassembled, the hood is sold, some of the hardware is still in the hull, yes some of it is nasty to look at, but if I had a hood and the missing hardaware I could and am capable of putting this together- TONITE and be riding tomorrow. the motor spins free. yes it is crusty. now someone please be funny and make fun of the bubbly turf or say," wow that is one clean ski!" or even better, with a stock 701 and this pipe/carb setup how well will this thing run? what rideplate will be best with this for freestyle? Impeller? toploader? any one have some of this stuff they want to sell? does anyone want to try out the awesome Cobrajet steering:bigeyes: ?(sorry Jeff, its gotta go, yes I will ride it once, no it will not stay on even if it works great. It will just get broken when I beach or load it on the trailer)
I am not a newbie to skis or repairs. I am far from being the best but I am sure I am capable. Sincerely I am greatful for the advice, just bring it up a notch from beginner to novice. Please.
I am so eager for that kind of stuff so please make fun of my ski, have fun with me....cause it won't be too long and I will start making imrovements. lets have some fun with it for now. there are so many funny people on here, lets go already. I am stoked, I have my dream project:arms: lets get it on!

I am sure it will be awesome once done, I just wanted to kinda follow a build up including pricing, just to see how mine compares and how it compares to modding a fairly new boat in good condition. I will follow the build post and maybe be of some help along the way, now lets get this boat to rehab.

I'll try to help a little if I can. What would you think my 97 is worth if it was a running ski with what it has minus the hood? it has the stock impeller. I think you can see the rest in the pics.

okay, update, clean and polish hull in and out. no paint inside yet. that and foot holds when the motor pukes. for now I just want to ride it. so Riva is sending me boxes and boxes its like Christmas over here. almost spent as much on hardware and such as I did for the boat. to be fair I did buy Kenny Keepers, a grate, mounts, hood hooks, bilge kit bracket and switch, chin pad the part that covers the bars( plastic no padding at all WTF?) couple hundred on nuts and bolts and screws( 1200 for everything to put it back together) pricey but like I said I did get a few high dollar items and yes I could have scrounged around at the junkyard for most of the hardware and saved some money but its fresh and the right size not mismatched junk.
sanded down the metal on the pole with a d/a and painted, tried to polish the waterbox and pipe, but they are really pitted and didn't get as nice as I hoped. the pipe is the worst. might have to weld some spots and seal it with epoxy and paint it.
so all that is left is paint the motor and put it in and the pump install. its pretty close. sold my 92 SJ and almost have 3 or 4 other skis sold. trying to get some of them in shape for sale has slowed the rebuild a bit but maybe tonite I will knock the rest out.
can't get pics to upload will try later.

tom21
09-26-2006, 03:22 PM
wab, white silicone, Why should it be? it felt like a flexible silicone sealant so that is what I put back. I used 5200 under the rubber tank pads, why would you take those out? I mean what possible reason would you tear them out? a lot of the stuff i had to get was that kind of stupid stuff, but I am pretty thorough with having all the parts that should be there.

Update..Friday I got it all back together. The ski must have been sitting with water in it for a while, cause the carbs had some water in them and there was a small bit of corrosion on the top of one of the throttle plates that put some small pits in the throat of the carb. the very hour after I got tired of waiting for the last couple of bolts for the ride plate and starter and had found some close replacements, the UPS guy shows up. So off with the makeshift bolts and on with the new correct stuff. battery, fuel tank and fuel, wire up the bilge wrong- Crap! rewire the bilge andhit the button! nada. check the plug connection and wammo! but it is not right. pull the plugs and they are wet! Shiot!!!!!! I did try to tip the motor over when I bought it and see if there was water in there but did not get any, so I hoped I was ok. but no. so now I am cranking and plug changing and its 10 pm. finally starts on one cyl. so swap out and try to clear the other. got it to fire. So now I load it up and take it to the shop- away from my house and neighbors. and get er running. a little carb tweaking and now she runs. I tried to make my own makeshift flush kit to go in the pisser and backflush but it is just to hard to hold it there. much easier with the flush kit so I will put that in later.fog the engine real good to give it a little protection til I can ride. Pesky job always getting in the way of my ski time! will get some pics soon, and maybe some on the water, it will either live or be time to build a budget 760 and do the footholds.

Hey tim... if you wanna ride you gotta PM me man!. I have my ski on the lift on north clearwater beach. But soon to have a blaster also. Dont trade it! unless you have another blaster?
Tom, Hey im gonna try to work something out where us local guys can all get together down here and cook out on clearwater beach once you get your ski up and going cuz i have plenty of parking and there is a small boat ramp here.... and we should all ride out to the spoil island or head out from sand key bridge and ride around the jetti.

yep it was good to be on a ski again! two weeks ago I went out on my 650sx to sell it and the bearing carrier popped and sank the ski. Good timing, right?
Well this SJ has definitely got more brap than stock. I think I am a tad on the fat side. And the only issue with it is that when it tips over on the left side when I fall it stalls quick? water from the exhaust? one or two of the screws on the pipe are not stock. seems to be running the right temp. maybe just a tad too cool, need some tune time. time for some BK Screws.
the cobra jet steering does nothing that I can feel, and compared to Dereks ski mine is not nearly as comfortable to ride. The cutout on the stock ride plate needs to be enlarged or maybe Derek will let me swap out the extended ride plate and see if that makes it better. I had a heck of a time staying on it. Stock grips suck!
It was about what I hoped it would be. maybe some adjustments and a ride plate or impeller and it will be almost what Dereks ride is. Not sure if the dry pipe he is runnin will always give him more Brap than me. But then I can fix that with a bump up to a 760 and some porting right?:fingersx:
Pardon the amatuer pics, I had a couple of nice jumps on some nice big boat wakes. Dunedin sure has some big suckers come thru there! None of which are on film. also notice how all the pics are thousandths of seconds after the trick is over!

And here is a very nice pancake! oh yeah!
I got a couple of subs but nothing good, and one where the ski went right in and then hooked straight down and I went flying forward in the water.
enjoy! please fell free to let em rip. I can take it. first day on the new boat, I wasn't expecting it to be pretty.

I just bought some aftermarket grips but they were the wrong ones and I was not impressed with how they clamped on the ends. so I just got stockers.

Hey, just a thought.....I am pretty sure there was some water sitting in the hull for long enough to leave some signs it was in there. I bet my ski handles like crap because it is waterlogged! looks like I have a defoam and footholds in my near future.
anyone confirm this? anyway to tell for sure? anyway to dry it out?

you can drill a hole in the hull. if water comes out then you are water logged. fill that hole with thickened epoxy.
I've read that water logged ski's handle better because there is more weight low in the hull.

well so much for that theory. guess the ride plate will be next on the change modify list. that worx intake grate is just awesome!

that was a bad attempt at a sub. Landed flat POW! :Banane01: I could have left it out but what fun would that be? that is the best you girls got? I am a sarcastic SOB, surely you can make better jokes than that. If you(my X-friends, sounds like a superhereo group LOL) ( The X-Friends:headbang: spreading build and ride tips and hooking up newbies with freerides) can't do a better job of getting a laugh from my sucky pics and skills I may just have to do it myself. and that would be more pathetic than my pancake pic.

like you don't know....but hey thanks that is a good idea to finish it up. I will be done turfing in a few days and I will trow up the install pics of the footholds, the few that I have and then the turf. I may even do Dereks buildup or get him to. just painted the bottom tonite. so obviously mine is still waiting for some love.
