Okay, this may not be in the right section, please move if not.
I am back to working on a 94 SN SJ I got last year. I had started reinforcing the sides but did so improperly. I used the wrong materials and had to start over. It was barrells of fun. Now for my question. WHat do I do with the piece that is in front of the hood? DO i epoxy it in place or epoxy and fiberglass cloth it in? The gas filler is being located inside the engine compartment BTW. Also are hand hols in the hood necesary? I don't do much lake riding. Just surf.
Thanks,
JD

Handholds are for hood tricks. :woot:

on that nose piece your best bet is going to be to make a mold of it, and clean up the mold a little bit, mainly so the fuel door imprint isn't in it, but you can take out some of the sharp edges too, what ever you like, and put a release agent in the mold and lay glass in that to make a completely new nose piece

Or you can save the time and spend the cash and just buy one.

Either way, you don't want anything to do with the original plastic piece.
My square had the 247 nose piece and it looked and worked great.

i know rickster just made a mold. im not sure how the finished product came out as he turfed over it. looks really nice though w/ the turf. PM him. maybe he can make ya one.

dont waste money on that, their way to expensive for what they are, I think.
do it yourself. epoxy the door right to the nosepiece, sand it smooth, paint it. Thats what I did. cost=free You could reinforce it from the back if you feel like it. I didnt. If mine breaks, at least I tried! But I dont think it will.

I did make a mold, and have produced some nose pieces for myself and my neighbor, but they are not for sell. I could not deal with all the B*tching that the manufacturers deal with on their product.
The piece on my ski is the plug and much more beefy than the actual nose piece which is why I turfed it.

The hand holds will be a no go. For the nose I am kinda leaning to what icerocket did plus pouring some foam behind it for reinforcment after the epoxy cures. SFL can I get a pic of your turfed nose?

i wouldnt pour foam behind it. just try reinforcing it with glass. it it ever comes off or you dont like it, youll have a huge blob of foam left. ewww

I'm not worried about having to remove the foam. Thats what they make sanders and grinders and sand blasters for. I will be turfing the rails and the nose as the rubber pieces were crap already. SFL, Was the turf screwed down due to it peeling back or what?

probly screwed the nose piece to the top deck to keep the nose piece from blowing off

Exactly! T he nose on the front of the squarenose comes off easier than a ladies undergarments  that is at the bar at last call.
I used 9 screws in total on my front nose peice that I turfed, and that thing is never going to come off.
Incidently, I had a modified stock nose peice on my square in the beginning that had 6 screws holding it on, and that lasted about 3 sub attempts. The plastic just does not hold up well enough to the pounding that the front of the ski takes.

Okay, If I fill the hole where the gas cap was and then epoxy+ screw and glass the plastic cover on and then foam between the hull and cover I should be okay right? Maybe a couple layers of cloth on top for good measure? I gotta go now, I'll have more questions later I'm sure. Maybe waxhead could make a billet squarenose replacement cover.

I would not go to that extreme, but I would put a layer or two of glass underneath the nose cover to strengthen it. Also when you screw it on, use washers to give the screw heads a larger area to grab on.
Just be careful putting glass underneath, as the tolerances are pretty tight and it would be easy to make it too small to fit on the nose.

yup, mess with the stocker before you spend big bucks. If mineseems flimsy, ill pop it off and glass the backside better, or screw it down. we'll see.

i must just be getting lucky cause i hear a lot of people say they snap off. but i do subs all the time and mine is fine. i almost always ride flat, but when i was in FL i broke motor mounts. tweeked my steering bracket and hooks. and chipped off some of my hood. never have had a problem with my nose piece. (lol, please note that none of that was doing cool stuff... just bailing) although it is flimsy as hell and i dont even like to sit on it. if i ever do an internal fuel fill, i will reinforce the hell out of it biaxial. probably will do that if i start getting inverted. (on purpose that is)

Also, Paul (Magoos) is coming with a new nose piece to give the square a round nose sort of. Might check on that.
200 sounds expensive but if you value your time as money, its probably the cheaper route. expecially if you want to know its not gonna break and look good.

Mine has cracks where it was previously screwed on with two sheetrock screws or something. If all goes well I'll get this done this weekend.

Can you paint hydroturf?
Rickster
01-18-2006, 08:34 PM
You can paint anything, but the paint would not stick on the turf.

Apparantly they don't make red. That is why I'm asking. I'll probably just use the gray. It matches most everything.

They do make red. Apparently it fades to pink real quick though.

ya, ask mark44 to post a pic of his red (girly pink) turf, i bet it started out looking good though, i think it matches him a little better now :nutkick:

I didn't see the red on their site and kinda guessed that fading was an issue. I've got a couple sheets of the gray diamond turf I'll use.
