JK Presents The HYDRO-TURF Freestyle Surf Slam October 21st & 22nd at Oceano Beach.

The HYDRO-TURF Freestyle Surf Slam (HYDRO-TURF FSS) will usher in a new era of PWC surf contests. HYDRO-TURF FSS will run in conjunction with the Central Coast Motorcycle Assoc. 3rd Annual Oceano Dunes Beach Race and Festival, the Smashing Pismo Beach Party, and a world class Sling Surfing Contest.

The Oceano Dunes Race is sanctioned by WORCS (World Off Road Championship Series) and will raise money to benefit Spinal Cord Injuries. Proceeds will benefit The Will Ambler Project (http://www.scicure.org/), and Clayton Memorial Foundation (http://www.cyclenews.com/about/clayton.html). More info on the race and festival can be found at www.oceanobeachrace.com (http://www.oceanobeachrace.com/) and www.worcsracing.com

The Sling Surfing contest will feature Josh Sleigh, and incredible aerial surfing from some of the best in the business!

Smashing Pismo Freeride Beach Party in keeping with the MexRager tradition will provide a great venue for everyone to come ride in the surf, and the dunes with your family, friends, and some of the best tallent our sport has to offer - all the feel of the Rager without the federalis!! As an added benefit, the California State Parks will be celebrating the one hundred year anniversary of off-road use at the Oceano Dunes SVRA. The Parks Department’s anniversary celebration will be taking place throughout the weekend.

HYDRO-TURF FSS will be an invitation only event featuring 16 of the world's best PWC surf riders competing in head to head heats. The judging will reward big spectacular aerial maneuvers with equal weight placed on the riders wave riding ability. If you think you are one of the top 16 in the world, please send photo/video resumes to OceanoFreestySurfSlam@hotmail.com. (OceanoFreestyleSurfSlam@hotmail.com)
All resumes will be considered.

Guys this is going to be an incredible event!!! I'm stoked to be able to help Joe Kenney put on a contest that truly shows what the best surf riders in the world can do. Riders will be scored on their top 4 waves ridden and top 4 unique aerial manuevers performed. So no more small stuff!!!!!

And if it is cool with the members of the x we would love to have the Smashing Pismo Freeride be a part of the x-h20 freeride tour! :Banane01:

More details will follow this week! Thanks as always for your support!

Would be cool if they could get permission to have the freeride competion at the pier. The view for the fans would be perfect. The waves also break nice right by the pier.

See you there!

Zach, it worked for me. You can also send it to Ross.Champion@yahoo.com if you would like.

More info will follow shortly as far as the contest goes...but it is obvious that this should be two posts. One about the Freestyle Surf Slam contest, and another about the Smashing Pismo Freeride which is another event. So look for more info tonight.

Thanks again to everyone who is on board!!!

Guys just updated the first post with a little more info about the event. I spoke with the parks department earlier today, and it turns out that this is the 100th anniversary of off road use at Oceano Dunes SVRA! And there is going to be a celebration in conjunction with that!

This is a HUGE weekend! Do not miss this, bring the family and all the toys. There will be something fun to do for everyone. I am working on securing camping spots now and will be up there next week to start securing hotel accomodations for the event.

Thanks to everyone who has submitted a resume! And I am going to reiterate that EVERYONE who wants to compete needs to submit a resume. We are looking for well rounded surf riders who can not only go big, but also bash a lip and surf a wave the way it should be done!

And as always thanks for the support!

PancakePete
07-20-2006, 05:27 PM
This is going to be the Biggest Surf competition to hit the US ! If you can go just to watch, DO IT, you will still be able to ride at Pismo ! Going to be insane.
See pismo Thread for Freeride Info ! BOTH Events are going to be INSANE ! :hail:

Thank you Ross & Joe, and all working on this ! You all Freakin ROCK !:Banane09:

If I'm understanding it correctly, there is an open freeride party attached to the competition freeride... meaning we will be able to ride either way...

Hey Guys - sorry I've been absent - no intentional snub - just busier than a cat covering *sheet* in a sandstorm....with a quick sneak off to the Oregon Coast last weekend tossed in ;)

Here's some important info as some folks are mistaking the campgrounds - The event is labeled "Pismo" but the actual camp site on the beach is "Oceano Dunes" - hope this info helps....

LP

IMPORTANT REMINDER/CLARIFICATION

The camp site for this event is NOT the Oceano Campground at Pismo State Beach. We are camping at Oceano Dunes SVRA. Our campsites are ON the beach in the OHV area.

Ocean Dune State Vehicular Recreation Area has 1,500 acres, featuring beach and sand dune riding. Thousands of off-highway vehicle enthusiasts enjoy the beach dunes of this SVRA most weekends. It is a motorcycle, four-wheel drive, all-terrain vehicle, and dune buggy use area. Camping is allowed on the beach, and you can launch your skis directly into the surf using beach carts. I would strongly advise against launching from a trailer as A) your behicle can easily get swamped...and B) We will laugh our asssses off at you.

Reservations are made by ReserveAmerica only, do not call the park for reservations.

Go here to make your reservations: http://ra1.reserveamerica.com/jsp/commonpage.jsp?goto=/usa/ca/ocea/newindex.html

Due to the popularity and nature of this park, there is no space available for parking additional cars. Each reservation is limited to one vehicle and one legally towed vehicle. Each vehicle entering the park under its own power must have an individual reservation number. Fees include entry for 1 vehicle and 1 legally towed vehicle per reservation. Four wheel drive vehicles are recommended. Vehicles on trailers do not need a reservation. A maximum of 10 reservations can be made for Oceano Dunes. Reservations available Year Round through ReserveAmerica. Reservations can now be made up to 2 days prior to any arrival date. Due to tide and beach conditions, check-in is as tides allow on your arrival date.

Getting There
The area is located in Oceano, three miles south of Pismo Beach, off Highway One.

Oceano Dunes SVRA
928 Pacific Avenue
Oceano CA 93445

For more information about the park, please call ( 805) 473-7223

Awesome news though! Dok Wok of Blowsion Kolors Fame has graciously offered to assist with food prep for the BBQ Saturday night...which is kinda like having Bobby Flay offer to assist me in my Bar-B-Quing endeavors!

I am SO happy - as between he, and my folks (who live in Pismo) assisting, this means not only will we rock your socks off with the best vittles on the beach - but I can also slip away and get some riding in myself on Saturday.

I am getting tired of working as a course marshall at the races and never getting to ride any more...this is going to be AMAZING!

If you guys can fly into Santa Maria, I can gaurantee I'll be responsible for getting you to and from the airport.....any other airport we'll have to discuss. I live in Sacramento now (northern CA - about 5 hour drive from Pismo) and our airport is served by pretty much all carriers. Jet Blue just started flying in and I know they're having a fare sale now....

If you fly into So Cal (LAX, Orange Co, San Diego, etc.) I'd bet good money some peeps would hook you up with a ride - that's anywhere from 3 to 5.5 hours drive - depending upon traffic which can suck asss bigtime there.

I need to call you tonight....:cool2:

No way - JK will compete, but I assure you - the juding will be 110% legit.

The selection process for competitors is on now. We will have a finalized list by which will be released here by this Friday, September 15th.

A reminder, 100% of the profits from this event will be donated to two exceptionally worthy causes. The Hydro-Turf Freestyle Surf Slam and Smashing Pismo Beach party will partner with The CCMA Oceano Dunes Beach Race and Festival to not only make this the most exciting weekend of extreme sports events in the history of Pismo Beach, but all proceeds will benefit two important charities; SCI Research Advancement, which is dedicated to finding a cure for spinal cord injury caused paralysis and the other, the Clayton Memorial Foundation, which assists injured motorcycle racers.

These events will promote enthusiasm and involvement in finding a cure for paralysis, and promote awareness and growth of our sport as well. It's an excellent opportunity for the pwc community to partner with other extreme sport competitions and have a positive impact on those effected with spinal cord injuires.

Save the date and spread the word. It will be a full and fun weekend with something for everyone. Thanks for your patience - now go book your flights!

K guys - I've really been remiss in updating stuff for this event...please forgive me - I've had some work and medical junk keeping me too busy, but I'm baaaaaaaaaack now ;)

Here's the article I wrote which will be posted in the Festival program, and hopefully in local/regional newspapers:

Who IS Joe Kenney?

At 6 foot two, he’s 205 lbs. of handsome, surfer-dude looking brawn. Women adore him, men want to be him, and given the chance, he’ll charm your grandma into buying him free drinks. It’s been said he must have balls the size of Texas, because he can do things with a jet ski that will make your jaw drop. On Sunday, October 22nd, at the Grand Avenue Beach entrance in Pismo Beach, CA, Mr. Kenney and 15 of the world’s fiercest jet-skiing “Freeriders” will go head-to-head for the top position at the inaugural “HydroTurf Freestyle Surf Slam.”

So who is this guy? In 1987, at the tender age of 16, Joe Kenney began riding stand-up jet skis. He competed on what was then considered the badass machine – a Kawasaki 650. After success in sanctioned close course racing, he was looking for an alternative method of training in the off season. Living in nearby Morro Bay, it seemed natural to combine his love of surfing, and riding jet skis by “playing in the waves when they were uncooperative for surfing.” It proved to be an effective training regime, and a whole lot of fun. Skip ahead 20 years…

Nowadays, Joe is fortunate enough to be a fully sponsored rider who travels the world over to exotic locales for international competitions, magazine spreads, and video shoots. He possesses a stable of some of the most beautifully custom painted stand-up jet skis, built with the sickest motors compliments of Blowsion Kustom Kolors. And the guy can ride.

But he’s got his hands full with 15 worthy opponents in this event. Eric Malone, the multi world and nationally ranked freestyle champion from Pennsylvania will be joining him in the break. Making the trek from France is Pierre Maixent, who placed 2nd in the 2006 IFWA’s World Tour. World famous Australian Freerider John Cook and local pros Taylor Curtis (Morro Bay, CA) and Jerry Brandon (Atascadero, CA) will also vie with a full compliment of professional riders for that top spot on the podium. With a twist on conventional freeriding competition, this event requires they compete on “class boats,” which completely levels the playing field. Skill, not funding will decide this competition.

The riders will rip it up and push their machines beyond their limits competing in head-to-head heats while getting HUGE air and performing INSANE surf riding. For the virgin spectator, freeriding consists of jumping and surfing maneuvers with personal watercraft in the ocean. Many of the tricks mimic those found in supercross – only these take place on a wall of moving water. Nose Grabs, 180º’s, Cancan’s, Superman’s, Heel Clickers, Nothing’s, Back Flips and Barrel Rolls, combine with a series of Re-entries, where the rider surfs the wave, launching off the lip and landing back on top cleanly. Heats are run, and points are given not only for going huge, but doing so with big style.

Joe’s goal for the event is to help gain exposure for the sport while raising money for some exceptional causes. The SCI Research Advancement, which is dedicated to finding a cure for spinal cord injury caused paralysis, and the Clayton Memorial Foundation, which assists injured motorcycle racers. He’d also like to build greater partnerships with other extreme sports such as Sling Surfing, and the WORCS motocross racing series to create a more exciting venue for spectators of the sports.

In addition to the on shore motorcycle races and festival, Joe pointed out there’s much more to watch on the water. “The sling surfing is going to include great aerial performers like Josh Sleigh from San Diego, and Nate Tyler from the Central coast. These guys are world renowned, cutting edge surfers who are sponsored as Freesurfers. They and their counterparts love the opportunity to compete in a whip-in formatted aerial surf contest, and I assure you, this is an amazing sport to take in. I hope to see the beach packed with new and experienced spectators alike. I guarantee, they’ll have a great time!”

The HydroTurf Freestyle Surf Slam is sponsored by HydroTurf, Blowsion Kustom Kolors, and TowSurfer.com. Joe Kenney wishes to thank his sponsors: Yamaha, HydroTurf, Blowsion Kustom Kolors, Jet Pilot, RIVA Motorsports, Jet Ski Unlimited, and CTI. What are the choices of airports to fly into and how far are they from pismo

There's a ton of info in this thread if youdig a little deeper....but basically, Santa maria is the most immediate airport - about a 20 minute drive to the site, or you can fly into LAX (or any of the SOCal airports) or San Francisco, or Sacramento and drive down. The event is on the central coast of California, 15 miles south of San Luis Obispo, CA ...if I were you, I'd avoid driving from the LA area as traffic can be a real killer.

PM me if you need specifics...sorry for the lack of additional detials - I just returned from Havasu/World Finals and am hashed/trying to play catch-up.

Thanks!
