I'm going to try to show pics, but if they don't work, go to my gallery and look under my pictures for "carnag". Can some one please explain how this happened after 2 rides since owning this damn thing. Is it because I'm missing the front bolt for the girdle kit? Is it because I flushed the motor wrong (really piss me off), ran the hose to the pisser that connects to the head and tried starting motor. Or too lean or etc.....

Better question is, what can I do? Can it be repaired, or do I have to replace the cylinder? This sucks, just got new bars, grips, bilge, and now I can't ride!

Thanks,
Chad

Here are some more pictures of the cracked cylinder and the ski and pissers so you see how I flushed it.

I would say it's more a result of the missing girdle stud causing uneven pressure on the water jacket.

That looks fixable possibly, but it would have to be welded while under pressure, those transfers reported, then decked (which would require recutting the domes) and even then might be questionable.

so jbweld is out of the question huh? Welded under pressure, I understood, you lost me the rest of the way. Anybody know of a place in florida that can fix this, Jr Magoo's? or is it cheaper to get another cylinder? I'd like to return it the way it was, it was fast as hell, not sure on the bottom, but I think it hit hard.

Thanks,
Chad

I am curious...why would the transfers need to be reported? The crack is in the water jacket area, well above the transfer ports.

if the crack isnt in the ports, no reporting would be necessary. darin may have thought that the crack was in the ports too.

Yep.

What I worry about is that where the crack ends is a stress point, so it needs to be ground out and welded to be fixed.

Alright guys, I've called and spoke to a few welders and pwc shops. I guess having a replacement done is out of the question since HPT I don't think exists anymore, and according to the original owner, the motor has a lot of work done to it, including porting. I am going to attempt to have it welded by S & S Welding, and hope for the best. I have a guy trying to track down a girdle bolt like mine, if no avail, do you guys know where I can get another and what gaskets need to be replaced.

The best bet is to remove the cylinder correct or leave it bolted in? You guys confused me with that under pressure thing.

Thanks again,

Chad

this happened to me last year.....missing girdle stud = cracked cooling jacket after awhile....

overheating would just make the chances of cracking more likely.....

George Grabowski (Mr. HPT) is retired, dealing with health issues last I heard. I should give him a call just to see how he's doing.

He built me a couple of engines over the years, one for my SXi and one for my SJ. Both super strong and reliable.

I don't know if it matters, but it is an MRD head. I know nothing about this engine, other than that the guy spent a lot of $$, and supposedly it has real low hours, pisses me off even more :banghead: Hey SFLSurfRider, if you have the same bolts as mine, I will take them off your hands for shipping costs if you'd like. If I bust one, then I will swap hardware. So, it is Ok to pull the cylinder off and have it welded carefully and shoot for the best right? If so, then I'm going to pull it tomorrow, and drop it off this weekend to have it welded then. Hey WaveDemon, do you know of a closer place that knows what there doing? Sefner is a bit of a drive :frown:

Hopefully I can go Brap again,

ps. WD when are you heading up to st augustine?

ps. WD when are you heading up to st augustine? There is a well known engine builder in clearwater who might be able to point you in the right direction. It's chucky at team scream, he's also on the board as supertune.

We're going to St. Augustine on the 22nd. there was a post about it in the SFL sebastion thread.

sflsurfrider, I can't send a message to you, and I wanted to see if you could hook me up with a couple of your old girdle bolts or anyone else? Just need one, similiar to mine in the pics.

SFL/saki are banned for cumulative reasons, of which what you did is one of them. Drop the freaking attitude, especially since he can't respond right now.

Wow, its been a while since I posted. Well lastnight I finally pulled the motor, and hopefully tonight I'll get the manifolds off. Any tricks or special tools for getting the intake and exhaust manifolds off? I will post some pics of my MRD head, it might be trashed, several marks, but the pistons look great (at least the top). This is definitely a bigger job than I wanted to start out with on a sj that was ridden 2x. I might need to buy a head, ada seems to be the choice for freestyle. How do I figure out what size domes I have, carbs, etc, and a good place to get new gaskets and O-rings for everything.

Thanks,
Chad

you don't need any special tools to pull the manifolds. give me a call if you need help.

or if you are looking for pro help for less than dealer prices get with Tom21. I've got his number if you want.

FYI...Any machine shop or anyone thats skillfull with a lathe should be able to put a few threads on some stainless rod for you. It's would take them about 20 minutes if that...

wheres those pics DSM? some of us are freakin dieing to see the insides of your motor- well at least I am.

when you have it welded have the place take a drill bit and start to drill at the end of each crack dont drill deep at all just enough to see if that is the acutal end of the crack.then take a dremmel and v out the crack.when its being welded get 3/4 or thicker peice of steel and put it on the top and clamp it to a flat table. after its welded deck the top and it should be good to go.ive done numerous cylinders that way and they still run.
