View Full Version : vista password help!
my parents just got a new computer with vista pre installed.
first time i booted it up it prompted a screen with guest and admin, well the admin requires a password that i did not set and have no other info that came with it other then the password hint is racing. its driving me nuts trying to figure it out and so far with no success. just wondering if someone can shed some light on this situation, i am a vista newbie.
thanks

If you can't figure out the password, and you're convince there's a preset password on there, your only recourse is to contact the distributor, ie. Dell, and ask what the preset password is.
Usually preset admin passwords are blank when you install Windows XP. No experience here with Vista.
you can reformat,, which is a good idea when buying a pc from someone anywho

there is software that will reset the vista password... you may be able to find a free version, but most are like $10.
usually you put them on a cd and make sure the computer boots to the CD. just follow the on screen instructions from there.
i have one version at my house... i'll see what it is when i get home tonight.
this was straight out of the box from office depot.

Reformat the hard drive and reboot with Windows XP
You'll be saving yourself a lot of trouble.

I'd bet dollars to donuts they accidentally put a password on.
It's happened twice on my nephews' computer in 6 months.

I use to have some dumb roommates that would mess with my computer and once a month would have to go in to their account and delete all the random :-):-):-):-) that was slowing my computer down. I am unsure if it works with vista but it worked with xp. Restart the computer and press F8 or F2 depending on what the choice is just keep tapping every 2 seconds both and the screen will come up (i just tested it on my vista) then start your computer in safe mode, i did not boot mine in safe mode cuz i dont have a password on here. Anyways continued, reboot in safe mode and see if it bypasses the login window, if it does, delete that password or change the password then restart your computer and see if you can get into it. Hope this helps....

Chris, that method you just described won't work if the admin account has a password on it. Even on XP if the admin account has a password on it you'll get prompted in safe mode. I think it's the same for vista.
Using safe mode to bypass the admin password only worked in windows 98/95.

Do the built in partition restore using the F11 key at boot. Its pretty quick....20 to 30 minutes if that. And then another 30 deleting crap and tweaking.

Actually come to think of it the easiest thing might be for you to just download a live CD version of ophcrack: http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net/
Burn it to a cd, put it in computer and boot from cd... will probably work, its not hard just point and click stuff
Lots of help on the net for it...

Here is another password reset program. It's basically just a linux boot disk. Probably not as easy as the other livecd, but it works for me every time. You can copy the image to a USB drive and boot from it. It can blank the Administrator password.
