I just heard that the Fire Marshall is going to be on the beach doing spot checks for gas cans and giving tickets if you have one down on the beach! They are not happy about us coming!!! :Banane13:

thats jacked up. apparently they don't appreciate the stimulation to their economy.
i have already been invited to hold the x2travaganza again in 2009 by the governing body on the island, were they approached for permits or is it a show up and ask forgivness later deal.these community politicians have to be approached w/ $$$ signs in their behalf to keep us going w/ all these rides. i was also the only ride that was required to have liability insurance in the amount of 1mil$ to hold my event. we would have had more funds to donate if that wasn't a requirement. instead we broke even

I did, sucka! My buddy who has been riding standup for over 20 years took family vacation at claybanks campground last weekend, and the campground owner said the township board had a meeting and they're up in arms to shut us down. Fire marshal is supposed to be on the beach doing spot inspections of skis for fire extinguishers, etc., and anyone caught with a gas can on the beach will get a ticket. I'm going to show up Sat. morning early, and if that bullsh*t is true, I'm probably going to hit Port Sheldon or Pentwater or something.

thats what i was talking about. i went the permit route and have the community asking for us to come back, basicaly no questions asked as long as my ducks are in a row like this year. including the saftey officer, and sherrifs dept.

Few freerides have permits, especially the smaller ones like Freestylefest and others.

It sounds to me like some other peeps need to get their ducks in a row too, people getting kicked off the lake at a freeride, people being harrased about gas cans on the beach, come on guys this is not the way to promote the sport!

The gas cans stuff hasn't even happened, aren't you jumping the gun just a wee bit?

You know, what's interesting, is when freestylegeek/myself/jetskee started Freestylefest, we looked into permits and for the small number of people we were going to have, were told not to worry.
Originally, the rides like FSF and Lake Lanier were started as just a bunch of friends getting together to ride in one spot. Not every freeride is a big shindig and requires a permit. Heck, Freestylefest is in a little used inlet over a mile away from a ramp in late September/early October. Wave Rave is far away from a ramp too.

I don't remember which ride but it happened earlier this year,a month or two back.So you are taking the wait and see approach? That might be fine for local peeps but personally I would be pissed if I traveled a large distance to get to a ride and ran into something of that nature, especially if it could have been prevented with a little planning.

only reason I asked is because it sounds to have gotten big enough that city officials are aware of it. Yes, all these rides started out without permits. But they seem to be attracting more and more attention.

I am pretty sure people went to the township meeting and stuff to get this all approved.
My opinion is we should be doing it later in the year. Nobody else will be at the park and there are better waves in the fall.
Right now, the campground is full and there will always be someone complaining no matter how much we behave.
If this is all true, looks like I will be needing a fire ext. Hmmmm, finding my registration might be a good idea also.

we had about 30 skis and 50-60 people + spectators. ran some tourists off and fishermen as well but, it was permited to be held on the beach / island. with the paid security from the sherrifs dept they were on our side.
i only had to address 1 rider for coming to close to the swimmers.( that darn green ski was zipping around)

Actually, they did go to the meetings to get a permit. It is a very small township and it takes a lot of convincing to be able to have this ride. There are just a few people in this tiny tiny township that don't want anybody else there. (I went last year and the jetskiers caused NO trouble.) I doubt anybody outside of the township even knew we were there. The only problems were the rent-a-cops telling us to keep it down at night in the campground. All there is around the place is woods and farmland...Nobody to bother!
I know I have called the State Parks about permits the last three years for the RockNRide and told them exactly what I'm doing and they told me I don't need one. (However, a Park Officer came to the ride this year to complain about gas cans on the beach and told me that I will need one next year because it has gotten so big).

Dude, don't come in here and talk smack about going to rides and being pissed... I know you haven't planned one and you don't even know what they planned or if they talked to anyone or not. You are just hearing a rumor and talking crap. :dunce: If you are gonna travel and be pissed about what's gonna happen, don't go. It's not like the people planning these are making money off of them. They put hundreds of hours into them. Remember, it's just a way for people to get together and ride. Sometimes the cops get a bug up their butt and act like jerks. There is very little the organizers can do about it.
I know WaveRave has been VERY big and successful. Last year there were about 100 skis!! I am sure it will be a killer time again this year.

DJ, I think you misunderstood what he was saying. I got it. He is referring to the Lake Norman ride where everybody got kicked out. There were several issues that led to this, (it all posted on the site), He was simply saying that had he traveled 10 hours only to get there and be told "hey, we cannot ride because there were permits required and we dont have them" he would be upset. This is the very reason we moved the SFF from Lanier to Alatoona. We were afraid this would happen there.

I am sure it will be a killer time again this year.Exactly....this can happen anytime, anywhere, planned/permitted ride, non-planned/non-permitted ride. And I agree, if you're going to get pissed off, don't go. It's just one of the chances you take, just like your ski breaking on a trip. Poopoo happens...it's called life. If people got pissed every time something didn't go our ways, we'd be pissed off all the time. And there are already plenty of people out there like that.

That's all I was sayin, Moonie. I'll have a good time even if I can't ride and it rains the whole time and my ski blows up! I called for permits, but I know the Park Ranger that showed up at the RockNRide could have shut it down and ticketed 1/2 the people there. Luckily, I was really nice to him and that didn't happen.
The Lake Norman Ride is a new one & I'm sure they'll get it goin for year II.

DJ, first off I don't talk smack. If I speak about something I have some knowledge ,sometimes I have extensive knowledge of the subject.I know what Justin went through to get the X2 xtravaganza put on,we talked about it damn near every day.I was also involved when Paul went to scout the site and talk to the Marine police when we were discussing putting on the SFF event here.I have extensively checked on putting on an event here myself but the times the campsite is available to occupy and the lake levels the past two years have not worked out as of yet.I am in no way trashing any event organizers as I know what a pain it is to get all the ducks in a row to make something like this happen. So you see now you are the one that dosen't know and is coming in here and talking crap, funny how that worked out isn't it?

soooo. Did the fire marshall show up? I just talked with kscarb and he said there were only 25 skis there. I went last year and there were over 85 skis. But...the waves were 2-4 so i hope everyone had fun.
I am pretty sure anyone who missed it will have another opportunity this fall to get together with the same riders, in bigger waves.
I was there last year and the year before, on saturday.
Was told yesterday's attendance was a lot more than today's.
Arived at 11 today and there were about 20 skis on the beach, but by 2 pm this is what it looked like.

i was up there for a few minutes today and talked to chuck. he said about 50 total skis showed up, good times just a bit smaller. no fire marshal showed up. chuck was sayin that the township is tryin to pass some rules that wont allow the cans on the beach, but it has not passed yet.

What a great event! This is my 2nd WaveRave and this year was even better than last years!
Saturday was awesome....3 to 5 footers in the morning and afternoon... and then they died down to 2-4s around 5pm and then 1-3s around 7pm. Great waves and great riding. I counted 67 skis on Saturday (not counting the campground). I blasted through 3 tanks of gas because the waves were so good. I've got a lot of great video that will be up soon. This is the most beautiful beach I have ever been too. Super clean, white sand dunes and nothing around for miles...kinda reminds me of Mexico. The water on Lake Michigan is so clean, you can see fish swimming around below you. Fun afterparty on Saturday night. The Crew at Claybanks Park was great. The non-jetskiing campers were very friendly this year. There was no fire marshall anywhere. Nobody gave us any problems at all. I think they are getting used to us there and realize that we aren't causing any problems or hurting anybody. I made sure to buy my gas, food and supplies from the local stores.
Thanks to Chuck, Cindy, Partyboy, Partygirl, Bruins and everyone else who keeps this event going. Thanks to Pete for the amazing food last night! (Great Surprise!..the Bologna sandwiches were killing me). Thanks to XFTLou and Frank (Blaster800) for helping me fix my broken fuel fill.
Sunday there was just 1 foot chop, so I think that is why so many people took off early, not to mention work on Monday.
Maybe 1 foot chop in the morning but by noon it had kicked up to 3+ with north winds blowing in at 15 mph+....:headbang:
