I just started doing Back Flips also except I’m not getting enough rotation. I’m not using a trim nozel, I don’t think you need them in the surf. Check out this vid clip of me and tell me what you think I can do to get a faster rotation. The first 5 sec I pull one OK, but the second attempt I pancake it Big Time. I put in a slo mo of the pancake attempt to see what I did wrong. After watching it a few times it looks to me like my problem is I hesitated throwing my weight and head back until after I left the face of the wave.

Looks like your hitting the wave too early, later is better and it should be white and just almost starting to go over.

if you watch your video you will notice that you throw the head and body back delayed to the motion of the ski....

Slow-motion attempt its best to see...

Yeah after watching the slow motion clip it was obvious what went wrong. I’ll get it down in the next couple of months. BTW thanks Matt E for posting the link, I don’t know why I couldn’t get it to load.

just my opinion. But it looks like your just leaning back and pulling evenly, which is nice and smooth but you need some more speed on your rotation. So I would suggest snapping back more and pull even harder. I've never gotten the amazing opportunity to ride in the surf and that looks absolutely amazing but I know that on smaller waves you have to kind of pre-hop and lean way far back and snap really hard to get the rotation started fast enough.

But, MAJOR PROPS for even trying them out there. Those are some huge waves. :Banane01::headbang:

Wow, great waves!!!!! I wish we got those on Lake Michigan.
I got some tips from Superrob one time that helped me a lot. He can flip off anything....it's unreal. I'm still trying to perfect them myself. We rarely get good enough waves here.
He suggested 2 things that helped me a lot.
1. Commit with your head right away
2. Put the pole almost down on the hood. This forces your weight forward....then when you huch your weight back off the wave your knees will be bent. Straighten your legs when you spot the horizon.

Hit the wave later and commit with your head sooner and I thin you will be all set. Those waves were awesome!!

There are a lot of guys here that are much better than me, but these are some things that have helped me start getting them a little better.

227 - i do the same thing. last time out i took a servere pancake, from about 15', and screwed up my leg. i always forget to follow through with my arch and lead with my head. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

i'm still limping and it's been a week now. :splatt::crutches:

notice your body position as you leave the wave, you are standing up already... when you leave the wave, make sure you are sitting down so you can initiate rotation w/ your legs and follow w/ your head and arcing your back... it the middle of the rotation you should be standing up straight and ready to spot your landing on the way down.

The ones you don't make are the most entertaning. The vests can get expensive.Your barrell rolls are awesome! pretty soon your flips will be that way.

lol, thats pretty much was i was doing in daytona most of the time.

first of all, stop using cheater waves! go find some nasty sloppy surf! no fair!

and here's a trick i learned to help you rotate faster when youre learning... hit the white water of a wave thats just started to curl.

that white water will shoot you past vertical way fast and get you spinning.

once youve done a handful, you can start hitting different waves at different times and your technique/form will take over like 2nd nature... just my .02

cheater waves! no fair!

something else you can try when first learning, is slow down a bit on your approach to the wave and pull the throttle as you ride up the wave which will help your rotation speed up!!

On a stock superjet, with only footholds, how big of a wave do you think you would need to do a backflip?

ive seen vids of the westcoast guys BFing some tiny litle waves with stock superjets.....im talking like 3'.

3ft is huge for us on the east coast, thats all we normally get to flip. LOL

If you have decent faces, hit the wave at the last second before it breaks or just as it's breaking, the ski wants to flip.

My problem now is going to big, I don't even try to flip so I don't over rotate.

Wow this is a super old thread but it keeps popping up. Since I started this thread last year I've gotten the BF down and this is what I've learned.

1. BF's are a lot easier than BR's
2. Never let go, I mean never. It's much better to pancake a 15 footer than have your ski land on you. Pancakes don't really hurt
3. The later you hit the wave as its breaking the quicker your rotation, so for small waves then hit the wave super late.
4. For larger waves (4-5+) you need a slower rotation so its best to hit the wave earlier and crouch and throw your head back as you go up the face of the wave.
5. For large waves (6-8+) do the same as step 4 just use a little LESS body english.
6. You are going to break stuff but it won't be as bad as you think. Stick to it, you'll get it.

If possible have someone video your attempts so you can see what your doing wrong/right. That really helped me. Check the vid link below for some of my flips after I got them down. All the BF’s in this video, first person, look back, and side view are me except the one at 1:22 which is Ryan Johnson.

OK so heres a wierd question for ya... When you under rotate a backflip, does it hurt when you land (upside down attached to the ski) ?

Matt_E
01-29-2010, 12:36 AM
No, provided you hang on tight to the ski.

However, I did break a finger on a pancake. I think that was a freak accident, though. Didn't hurt, either.
