MSD ignition advance

I bought a 7 degree ignition advance and the package says for 750 only, but the dealer said it will work on an 800.

who do I believe?

What year SX-R do you have?

If you have a 2003, you have the right item. If you don't, then you don't.

Nope. Do a search. You have to jump a wire to advance the timing on the new ones!

even for like a 6 degree R&D plate??

Should I send the thing back or is it worth it to try and make it work?

no you dont. I have been running the PJS advance plate since I bought my ski in 04. The jumper is not a guaranteed 4 degrees, it may be 2 degrees, it could be 5 degree's.


The timing plate will work just fine.

so its for certain that I can put on this 7 deg. advance plate and it will advance my timing, it just may not be a full 7 degrees? annnd its going to be safe for my motor and i am not going to over heat something and have a $1000 repair bill due to a $50 part? haha

going 4 years, have 2 sxr's set up this way, it is fine.
to me, it is the correct way. Just un plug the green plug when you do this.

I ran advance plate on my 04 for a "true" advance.
From dinking around with my stock class racer I found that motor is able to handle quite a bit of advance. Of course you have to take jetting/compression and other variables into the equation.

whats the green plug for initially?

and for some reason I am still not totally clear, but the plate will work, and I still have to unplug the green wire? Cuz up there ^^ there is talk of jumping wires and this n that...its scrambling my brain haha.

oh, and it came with a gasket too...is this to replace the o-ring or is it used as some kind of a spacer? it seems rather thick

ok well Blowsion answered all my questions for me, so I went ahead and proceeded to put it on, only to realize it just doesn't fit. Guess that could have answered all my problems earlier!

The pickup hits the engine cover so the screw holes dont line up.

you have to get a dremal and grind the backside of the flywheel cover to clearance it, if you punch through, you just JB Weld the outside to seal it back up.

You can also grind the advance plate.

next question:: They give 2 lock washers and 2 small regular washers, small washers are supposed to go between the pickup and the plate it says..the short screws they provide don't fit with the washer there. Do I use the stock long ones and cut them, or do I just not use the washers?

Not using the washers sounds like a bad idea to me. But i'm no expert, maybe scorn will chime in. He seems to know what he is talking about.

do the stock ones bottom out?

cant answer that one, had both of ours installed before we picked the ski's up.

well I am going to go ahead and assume no washers. The plate that the pickup is attached to has a little lip where the screw holes are, so it doesnt mount flush. I am going to assume that on the 750's the plate was flush and thats why they include washers. I'll mount it up w/o washers then see what happens.

IF the directions call for washers, use the washers........ there is a reason for it.

k well here's an update::: I used the washers and in the end the pickup ended up touching the flywheel, I guess the loctite came loose, and wa-bam...now I need a new stator.

Things just keep getting better....
