View Full Version : Rippenkroeger Barrel Roll
I got the Larry Rippenkroeger video and watched him do a barrel roll on a 550. OK, it's not what I was thinking, but it is still pretty slick anyhow.
I get on my knees in the tray and grab the left rail with my left hand, right hand on throttle. I get the SJ up on plane. I turn slightly to the right and then hard to the left to break the back of the ski free. The SJ slides sideways, tuck your head down to the right and when the right rail catches water around she goes around in a barrel roll. Get back on throttle once the ski is 3/4 of the way around and ride away.

Yeah, I was laughing when I watchd that part of the DVD. I was like "Alright, now I get to see step by step how to do a BR" never knowing my ski would never have to come out of the water to do a barrell roll.
Still, the stuff that dude was pulling off on a puny old Kawi was pretty damn impressive.

The name barrel roll is old school. Larry's was the BR from before, back in the day, before the current aerial BR ever happened. Nose stabs, re-entrires, no handers were the big tricks back then. From what I remember.
Scott 'Hollywood' Watkins was my fav.
:brap: ..., this stuff was unheard of.

I've had the video tape of this since 96', but when the recent re-release of this DVD came out, I didnt want to tell and spoil that part for the peeps buying it! lol I knew I would see this thread soon enough!
I would like to add that we always called it a logroll too, and it helps to grab the opposite rail from the rail that hooks on the water before you log, I mean roll..lol
Wow, I havent dont that trick for probably 6-7 years... have to do one again, pretty fun from what I remember!
The "Undertaker" is a great rolling type trick too..
I'll have to explain that one sometime. It could be very dangerous if things go wrong.. but freaks peeps WAY THE FOCK OUT if you dont know what is going on!

I have a good idea what the undertaker is and from what I remember it's harder to do on a wide hull like a SJ or SX/SXi/SXR.

just make sure you grind down under your rail if you made a 45 degree angle when you put your turf on... I tried this last weekend, and the edge of the angle cut my dang finger!!! Damn you Rippenkroeger!!! :-)

Wear gloves. I have cut my hands before doing tricks and found that wearing gloves eliminates that.

If you're only getting half way around, it sounds like you need more speed going into the slide. If I am short on speed I can twist my body to make the remaining revolution, but with good speed you and the ski will flip around with no body input.

wasnt there allready a discussion about this? yes its not technically what most current people associate with a barrel roll, and yeah it used to be referred to as a log roll.
as far as im concerned, its close enough, just because its not in the air doesnt make it any easier. old tricks are sometimes the best tricks i think, when you see someone break out some old stuff during break dancing, skating, motorcross etc.. its allways has that, "oh yeah, i remember that" factor.
plus it looks fun as hell, and thats all that really matters! :brap:
