i know these guys have a good rep but i didnt have a great experience with them. im building a budget surf ski for my brother and the guy i bought the ski from threw in a skat 9/17 impeller. i called up impros and told them what the ski was and what prop i had. i asked them to re-pitch it to what they would recommend for a stock 701 that will be ridden in the surf and would maybe get a pipe someday. they said ok and that it would cost 50-70 dollars. i got the prop back and it looked great. then i saw that the bill was 89 dollars for the work and 9.44 for shipping (which cost me ~4.35 to ship to them nbd.) then i gave them a call and asked what pitch they set it to, and they said they left it a t a 9/17 cause thats what they would recommend! the thing was in good shape, completely runable.
im on a tight budget as it is and just wasted a 100 bucks for nothing.

did you speak directly with Dave? that doesn't sound right.

An estimate is just that. you need to call and find out what they actually did. It may have come from the factory saying it was a 9/17 when in fact it may have been 9/9/10 x 16/17/6 and they trued it to a 9/17. I had a company that is now out of business do my first solas, prop, that thing was so far from being accurate it was not funny. They may have had to do some welding to get the blades back out to the true diameter.
Give Dave a call.

Did you agree on the re-pitch before hand?
what were you told it would be re-pitched too?

I totally disagree the estimate was 50-70 bucks. if it was going to be more than 70 bucks they should have called and explained that it would cost more and why it was going to cost more. they also should have told you before you sent it off the 9-17 was actually what they recommended for a surf boat.

Dave has done a TON of work for me and always been very fair and done awesome work. I would just call and talk to him calmly about it.

i asked for a re-pitch to whatever he thought would be ideal, he didnt tell me what it would be. i called after i got it back to see what he pitched it too and he said he didnt change it at all.

what did he do then that cost so much?
I would agree with you, and probably be unhappy about how that went.
I have to say, I have dealt with Dave, and been VERY happy.
There must have been a communication breakdown somehow.

I hate to bring a negative thread back to the top when a simple phone call would have answered your question Brett.
If you remember, you called and said you wanted to send an impeller in for a repitch. It got here, rock damaged (not destroyed, but in need of repair), the blades were off, and the diameter was .050" small. Our repair prices are on our site, and have not changed in years. It needed welding and remachining back to new spec (5.665"). I let you know that is was worn, and needed welding. Based on the info you gave for the ski, and the type of impeller you had ( a Skat Std impeller), I suggest a 9/17. Any lower it will beat your rev limiter. The fact that I didn't CHANGE the name or repitch it completely is beside the point. In your case, I felt that correcting the pitch was best. The impeller would cavitate and perform poorly because of the large gap between it and the housing, and the blade pitch was off from the damage (or previous repitch attempt).
By the way, we keep all the notes with the work order.
Per your note. "This impeller has supposedly been repitched already, but I have no idea if it is a 9/17 Skat".
There's no fast one being pulled on you here Brett. You now have a virtually brand new impeller (tight in the pump, at a good accurate pitch) and refinished and balanced for less than $100.00. You left it up me to pitch it for your application. Run it. If you don't like it CONTACT ME. That's the right pitch for your stock ski using that design impeller. That's the best way to get results, before you get on the internet and try to smear a company's good name.

i wasnt tryin to smear a good name, and i thank you for the response. i just think you should have told me from the get-go that this was the pitch that was necessary for my project. look, i blame myself for not doing the research, but you yourself said it would be a 70 dollar job, and it turned out to be ~20 dollars more. with this thread i was doing no more than just warning other riders to be extremely specific as to what they are lookin for when modifying a prop.

Sorry for the misunderstanding then Brett. If I gave you the impression that it was definately a 70.00 deal, then I apologize. I try to make a point not to give a set price without seeing the part, because the part I get may not be as described. I try to only quote a price if someone said they are sending in an undamaged impeller in for a repitch/refinish/balance. Other than that I say "approximately".
Since I gave you that impression, call me and we can discuss how we can make you feel better about the transaction.
Thanks
