WoW, it's been a couple of Days since Ronny announced the build off..............No comments yet?
I guess that means you don't want us to do it?????

So far, I have heard that. Steve (WCF) , Wammer, CG Racing (Chuck Galipsie), Keith Head, UnckaHunka (sp?) & myself are all in.
Others are tentative................
Some of the very best freestyle watercraft in the world might be produced!

Last weekend, I watched a couple of episodes of Biker buildoff. On one of the shows, An underdog won!!......... This could be anyones game!!

Please tell me you are getting excited to see this again this year!

Does it have to be custom ski or can it be a very nice painted ski with real clean motor and pumpsection.
Maybe we can add another class.
There are lots of freeride skis with hood kits and nice paint jobs but they do not fall into custom cat.

Just a thought.

I dont think he did anything for Ripper or Watkins........

I think they guy that did Watkins was something like "Looper or Loopers House of Kolor - somehting like that.......... may be the same for Ripper.
paint jobs were similar.

I thought they were both riding for R&R jet tech. The guy who was doing the paint at the time was a Brazillian from So Fla....... Wammer???

this is a great question. I think that Riot and the big dogs should
talk about this, Pro and Am class, or anyone can enter ?
This will open up build to lots of heads.... Be very cool,
but it is also peoples choice votes. So 2 class would be good
so pros boats dont miss the votes.
Like if I wanted to enter, would a boat made by WCF and an engine
by Jr.magoos be allowed or custom enough to be entered, Mind you
I am not building those 2 things but i would be making it a custom
install and doing other custom personal things to it. Tough call.
is others boats a total custom... :cool2: I think 2 classes would be cool.
I would love to see what people think of different boats.... like sluts
parrs, superjettdave, geeks, and a bunch of others... that would be cool.
I could also see like 100 people entering as well, tough call....
what you think X-h20 ?

Jr.
02-07-2006, 12:30 AM
Here's the problem Pete................... This compition is about FUN!
It's not about classes, or who beats who, or anything else. Racing has so many classes, it basicly bored everyone to tears............ Thats not going to happen here. This is Fun, For Bragging rites. for ooohs & Ahhhs.
Win , Loose, or Draw, we are all friends in the end.

Last year there were more custom boats on the beach , than were entered in the build. This year, in expanding on that, everyone was welcomed to participate. the only basic rule is, you have to build (assmble & customise) your own boat. going up against, whoever might enter. Pro's included. All for FUN!! It's not about having more winners, it's about having lots of boats on the beach. it's about FUN!!

Waste Land

IMO - Keep it one class

Run what ya brung style. Adding classes will just make it more trouble. Keep it simple. Sack up or sitdown....one vote one person.

I think keeping it simple is the way to keeping it fun.

I think these rides and buildoffs are an excellent way to grow the sport. Me and my freinds attended the Fall lanier ride last year. It was our first ride, not that we havn't been riding along time, but just found the boards Last summer and learned about the rides. Anyway we were truely inspired by the skis we saw there and their wasnt even a buildoff. I went home that week and tore my ski apart and all three of us currently have builds going on.Whens the deadline? You guessed it, the spring Lanier ride. Our builds cant even compare to the skis some of you build but have been fun and a great learning expierience none the less. I cant wait to see what people pull out of there hat and I bet there will be alot of customs not in the buildoff just like ours. They will be awsome to see too.http://www.x-h2o.com/showthread.php?t=96

All great points guys!
I think this year we need to keep it one class (everyone).
maybe next year we will split it up to am/pro classes. This is getting big!
Amateur would be tough to figure out who qualifies. A guy like T-Bone would have to spend a lot more $ than a guy like Pete with all his sponsors.
Lots of things to consider to split it up.

Not that I have attended a Riot Ride... yet... but it seems the build off is to see who has the best ski (function and style). I would definately hate to compete against Paul or Steve, but I also do not think if I had a WCF hull with a Magoo Lamey special I would not be allowed to enter. Remember, there is also pole, hood, pump, paint, inginuity, creativity, and bling.

The question to ask when voting:
"Which ski would I want to have if I could take one?"

Here's a thought..........................

Last year everyone was judged by a peoples choice vote, on a visual basis only........ I belive that should be 75% of the vote.....
now here is the kicker. Set up a panel of 5 rider judges. people who know how the boats are supose to perform. let them do an evaluation of the boats. there would be the final 25%
now judging criteria would be based around, handeling, balance, power, overall impression. Last Year I won on looks & detail. But the boat wasn't dialed in. I found a lot of improvment over the next couple of months.
The new build boats will basicly be the same performance wise. By putting in this type of judging factor, our build performance will be taken to the next level.

Steve,Tom,DJ,Chuck, other builders, Your thoughts on this????

The idea is great, but i might as well give up then. We all know you have the biggest motors, which in turn will produce the most power. I'll be running a stock stroke boat, and for sure wont be able to compare with your 8mil lamey.

I'm not a builder and I'm certainly not qualified to tell you how one should feel, but I really like the idea of performance being a factor. I really hate "trailer queens" and crap that either never gets used or is all show and no go. I say do it. Probably not near as big a problem here as in hot rods or custom cycles, but you get the point.

I'm fighting a similar dilema, my platform hasn't been around and in standups for over 13+ years, it's much harder motor combo to perfect in just a couple of months (I'll be lucky if it runs).

I'm sure those streched out choppers don't perform like sport bikes, but somehow the choppers are always winning the shows.

But it doesn't matter either way. I'd be more concerned if i thought I was playing for first place.

the judging should be done by as non biased a judge panel as possible. "entourage voters" are biased voters. "peoples choice" is nothing more than a popularity contest.:bs2:

Sure.. I'm up for anything! If more than half of the people in the buildoff are up for it I say that is cool. 25% of the final judging sounds good. However, we get into a tricky formula of does the whole 25% go to one person or if there are five judges, whoever each judge votes for gets 5% of the vote.

I like the idea of getting people to ride the boats.... the math gets a little tricky, however.

djkorn1
02-25-2006, 01:26 AM
This could make this a long process, but if we do it, the people in the buildoff should each pick 5 judges and the ones with the top 5 votes are in.

Judges can nominate themselves to be on the list. Maybe , each can take a 5 minute ride on each ski.

I'm not taking this too seriously, so I think anyone is eligible to nominate themselves as long as they are not in the buildoff.

I like the idea.
We pick say 5 guys to ride each ski, and write their opinions for all the voters to take into consideration in their votes. They must be willing to let everyone see their thoughts on each ski, and each test rider cant have any affiliation with any builder.
Maybe we should have nominees for test riders, so everyone is comfortable with them being unbiased. (is this possible?)
Its a good idea, if we can make it happen.

I think this is a great idea..... and makes it more exciting for us spectators:Banane01: Plus you builders are going to be spending a lot of time and money building the "ultimate" ski - so I think it should be based on more than just a simple viewing to judge.....

Even though we all know that I don't know the technical side..... but numbers I do.

Make the entire contest based on a point system..... Even the people's choice - maybe base it on a point system of 1-5 rating.... Looks, details, appearance, wow factor for the people's choice and the riders base their judging on the same point system but based on handling, power, balance, and overall impression..... The builder with the highest scores WINS! It makes it simple..... I'm sure that Ronny and Evan can come up with the forms for everyone to rate.....

As far as riders.... I agree it should of course be riders that have the experience to judge but I would love to see some of the owners of each site along with pros and upcoming pros...... Maybe Riders such as Harrison, Evan, Jason, Ratti (maybe he can hit that back flip.....LOL)..... Isn't it all about the future of the sport and the promotion of it....???? I just think it should be a group that represents that fact....:woot:

If you base part of the voting on a panel of judges that ride the ski's, and there is only one build class, then I feel the panel of judges need to range from the absolute novice to the professional.

Once the judges have made their decision, then their votes are averaged and totaled with the votes of the spectators.

This would give the small builders that don't have plutonium under their hood, the same chance as the Magoo and WF boats. the novices would not be able to handle the high powered nuclear fueled boats, giving them lower marks and the pro's would not be as impressed with the small builders boats with stock power plants.

othrwise you need to have two classes, pro and amateur jike like in freestyle competition.

Whatever we decide, lets not make it too complicated. Then the fun factor goes out the window.

I don't think we need a point system or anything... The most votes wins. The judges votes are weighted a little more to make up 25% of the votes.

WoW, I guess most like the idea!! thats really cool!!

The build off to me, Isn't who has the biggest whatever motor. It's who has the best overall package. Looks, performance, WoW factor, rideability.

I agree Static boat shows are boring. To make these boats be able to perform is a key element in the build. That needs to be showcased in some manner. I also agree that a peoples choice is a popularity contest to a degree. But it's also gives the most favorable results.

It's simply not possible to let everyone in attendance ride these machines. But the riding judges need to know how a custom FS boat is supose to preform. Putting a complete amature on a mod boat is dangerous, reguardless of who it's built by. experiance is a definate key.

I have some friends who judge custom auto shows. I'm going to ask them what sort of criteria they use & see if its adaptable for our use.

Please keep in mind that this is only an idea. I'm exploring a possibility,
the final decision will be a vote by the builders of this contest.

Keep the ideas rolling in, there is a lot of good stuff coming for you all.

I've been reading this post for a few weeks now, and after 11 pages of posts, I'm still not seeing a valid way for "Joe Schmoe" to compete with a WF or a Jr. Magoos?? I saw Paul's suggestion about having a people's choice award, but I still feel as though there needs to be at least a few categories for contestants. I understand we don't want to create boundaries in this competition because everyone in it is there to have fun, but I honestly don't see how a $200 ski is going to compete with a $2000 ski is going to compete with a $20,000 ski. Do you guys see my point??

At any sort of auto show, there are multiple categories....

1. Show and Shine
2. People's Choice Award
3. Best Stock
4. Best Modified
5. Etc

I really think for a competition like this that a few categories would be the best route to go. I also believe we would have more entries if we made awards more attainable.

Just my two cents.

Great ideas, for an organized competition, but you have to realize this is not a truly "organized" event, it's just a bunch of friends getting together to ride when you get down to it, there is no insurance, etc etc. Keep it simple. Besides, it's just for bragging rights, and to show what you can do.

Thats just too much stuff. People are trying to make the event better but only confusing it. The point of the build off is to see who makes the best boat. It's not meant for everyone and their brother to join up. It's a "**** or get off the pot" situation as Slut says

That is basically what I'm getting at. I understand the sport or event in this case is small, but I can't see there just being one class. How many entries are we having at this point? If it's anything in the 10 ski realm, two classes may not be a bad idea.

Taking this from another angle....

A contestant contemplates entering but believes they don't have a decent ski because they are going up against a Jr. Magoos or a WF. In effect, you've limited the entries. So in theory, but not creating more than one class, you've done just the opposite of what was proposed. Do you see my point? Now if there was an amateur buildoff in addition to the "Big Dogs", I bet the entry list would go up.

One class is good if everyone has the same talent, same resouces, same pocket book, etc. In this case, that isn't true.

maybee differant levels of builders, I don't know. but one big build with differant classes, isn't what I feel this is about.

Like Jett said, these are fun, non-sanctioned events. It's where we get togeather for good times. These builds are for nothing more than bragging rights. Lets keep the fun in it :Banane01:

It's all about beating Paul's ass!!:Banane09: :spank: :bananapowerslide:
