View Full Version : How much should I chop off??
Just picked up a stock pole and am going to shorten it. I am thinking of cutting 2 inches above the bottom black bracket, to make it a total of 3.5 inches shorter. I am 5'10 and was wondering what other guys my size think of this length?? What lengths is everyine else using??

I'm 5'9" and -2" on a stock pole. I could easily go an inch or 2 shorter.

I'd say go for it. I rode a few skis with -4 and -5 poles and I liked them and I'm only like 5'7. Especially for a flat water boat, I think you would be fine.

I am like 6'1 and have -2 chopped pole on my squarenose with a -1 turnplate from blowsion and I could go -3 or -4 pole with no problem.

I'm 5'4" (:Banane01: ) and I run a -2 pole, shortened turn plate (-1.5?) and lowered bracket (-1?)
I guess that makes for a total of -4.5 ?
It feels really weird standing on it on the trailer, like it's waaaay too short...but it's perfect in the water.

I'm 5'9" & rode Slut's ski w/-6.5 & loved it so much I ordered the AMW turn system a few days later - Not sure how short it'll be with AMW -2 pole, AMW turn system = -4"?:Banane01:
This was in medium choppy surf.

My suggestion to you is cut off what you described in the original post. That is what I did. I rode it for a month and then decided to take another three inches out of it. It only costs you 10 rivets (Stainless Steel rivets), a little epoxy, and about an hour of your time. But, if you cut off too much- your ****ed.
I am happy with mine at -6 with standard UMI plate and 4 degree bars. I am almost 6 foot and weigh 225. I am definately able to control the ski better and the nose isn't always finding the sky after jumps.
wow thanks for all the replys guys...looks like I am on the right track. I think I might cut 2.5 inches off plus i am running a lowered pole bracket so -5 inches in total! :woot:

i plan on shortening my pole now, i dont understand this part tho... cutting 2 inches above that bracket makes it -3.5 ?
if i cut 3 inches off, what would it be ??

There's about 1.5" if the stock pole sticking into the aluminum bracket at the bottom. The easiest way to shorten is to scribe a line parallel to the top of the bracket, cut and then remove the cut-off piece from the bracket. If you cut 1" above the bracket you lose 2.5" total (1" + 1.5" inside the bracket). Make sense?

Just read the last part of your message: if you cut 3" above the bracket, you'll lose 4.5" total.

It's one of those rare occasions when shorter is better:clown:

I ran a -2in pole and -1in turn plate on my squarenose and it felt good, but I could go shorter (I'm 6'1). The XFT I order is -2in with a -1.5 steering system. The nice thing about going to a roundnose style pole is it is more straight and does not have that bend in it like the squarenose pole. I think the squares tray is a little longer as well so you stand a little further back.

you can use a matabo, bandsaw, jigsaw, circular saw, anything you have access too. just make sure its staight. that 2part epoxy works great. Not sure what size rivets they were. same as the old ones. and make sure you use stainless rivets!

No, use aluminum rivets w/aluminum shanks. If you use stainless or stainless shanks it'll be MUCH harder to drill out if you ever need to. Aluminum will hold up fine even in salt water; just get anodized aluminum rivets.
