After 16 years of smoking:

I hadn't heard of Chantix until the Off Topic thread (Pancake Pete, fairly recent). There are some comments re Chantix on there. Over here in NZ I was reommended and prescribed ZYBAN several years ago. Similar cost for a 3 month prescription. (you smoke for 2 - 3 weeks and then go cold turkey supposedly, "yeah right")

The first week was cool. I was fairly committed to giving up so slowed down on the 2nd week. The 3rd week went "cold turkey". I was thinking "this stuff really works", "no anger, no having to have everything immaculate, no 4 mile runs a day, still had my friends, my staff hadn't deserted me, my marriage was still intact, hadn't replaced the craving with food, I could watch and smell someone else smoking without the need for one".

After 2 and a half months I went back to the Doc for a prescription renewal. He asked how long I'd stopped for. I told him approx 2 months feeling quite proud of myself and looking forward to more tabs. He said "NO, it's worked". I begged him for more but he refused.

I walked out of there feeling a little dismal BUT he was right, the nicotine addiction had not been replaced by an addiction to pills. Personally I had no side affects. (Watch out for your lady, I can't remember if there were any adverse pregnancy and so forth side effects mentioned)

I highly recommend ZYBAN and sincerely hope that CHANTIX (could be the same stuff) gives you the same results.

Good Luck. I used to smoke and it seems like when you drink you get the craving a lot more. Just remember though the longer you don't cheat and stick with it, the easier it becomes not to pick another one up.

Smoking saves you money and will make you feel better. It is amazing though how times have changed. I work for a big corporation and if you smoke it is HIGHLY frowned upon and people judge you in a negative way.

Yet they abide to all equal opportunity employment laws... Hypocrites.

We hear it can give some crazy dreams.

So can acid...

Good for you for quitting, talking abotu it is one thing though..

I've gone from 10-15 butts a day to 1-3. Huge improvement in health, I still get to smoke, and it doesn't cost chit. Thats me, and my plan as of now.

Just my humble opinion, bound to piss people off.....but replacing one addiction with another is backasswards.

Quit cold turkey, WANT to quit, and just get it over with.
Yeah, you'll be on edge for a couple of days, but that's it.
I've smoked 3-4 years about 3 times, and I quit cold turkey each time (with at least 2 years in between restarts :bigok:).
Haven't smoked in five years now, doing just fine.
You have to actually want to quit.

I hadn't heard of Chantix until the Off Topic thread (Pancake Pete, fairly recent)..

I quit during that thread using chanix. I used only 1 pill per day for 1st 7days while still smoking then quit. I continued to take a pill of chantic (instead of 2) for 2 weeks after i stopped smoking. Jan 25 was the last smoke I had and haven't had 1 since. I feel 100x better and ready to ride like crazy:bananalama:

I agree with you Matt on the wanting to quit comment.

However I dont mind taking advantage of a chemical blocker for free to help out LOL
It may have been easier previously had wifey hopped on board.:shooter3:

This time were doin it together LOL :Banane09::Banane09:

I'm sure that having the wife on board will help out immensely. I would agree with Matt that until you really want to quit then nothing will help you quit.

Your only supposed to be on "Chantix" for 3mos and Ive spoken with several ppl it worked well for!

It just blocks the actual chemical addiction you still have to deal with behavioral etc.....

But weve tried halfassed a few times with little success.

So this time were just going all out and it WILL work there isnt an alternative LOL
Ive got to balance out rising gas cost somehow darnit!!!!!!!!

And therein lies the problem.
Commit, want to quit, and you'll quit.

So you were an occasional social smoker???

EVERY person ive ever heard say how easy and simple it is to quit never really smoked much to start with. Ive smoked for about 15 years about a pack a day and I dont care who you are there is nothing EASY about just dropping something that has been commonplace for that long!!

Some ppl do have more willpower than others but I still havent met a smoker that thought it was easy to quit.

Sorry Matt I doubt you ever smoked more than socially for you to have that opinion.

Pretty much sums up what Ive heard about "Chantix" except you quit in the first week and no there isnt any added pill addiction. My wife and I dont plan on having kids anyway but there were no ill effects mentioned.

I smoked a pack a day, every day, for years.

NEVER a social smoker.
I didn't say it was easy. But you have to have a good reason to quit, and you HAVE to want it.
There are plenty of times that I still want a cigarette (or a whole pack, lol).

That's good advice right there. I used to smoke a pack a day. I couldn't quit until I could accept the fact that I could never smoke another cigarette for the rest of my life.

I haven't had a cigarette in a year and half and I know that if I had JUST ONE, it would be all over.

Btw, I smoked Menthols exclusively.

Fair enough Matt gotta give you credit for having more willpower than most as it is a difficult one for sure.

We smoke Marb Menthols here as well actually chewed when I met my wife but she didnt like it so I switched like an idiot shoulda quit then!!!
Even though the chew was a substitute for smoking at the time anyway. Ive only been on Chantix for 2 days so far and noticed nothing yet but I dont think my issue is chemical to be honest I have idle hands therefore I smoke syndrome LOL

Matt_E

I used to chew and they only way that I was able to quit was because I substituted sunflower seeds for the chew. It seemed to work. There are still days, especially in the spring/summer when I'm fishing or driving when I want a chew but they are fewer and farther between each time.

Wow, I cant believe so many other people have tried zyban. That ******** works great. Within 1 week, I still smoke on occasion, but damn, I cant believe its not more advertised, it blocks the brains receptors that accept nicotine, hence taking all possible addictive properties away (basically, smoking a nicotine-less cig is what all cigarettes taste are like).

Keep it up dude!
I quit 4 years ago after smoking 2 packs a day 5 years. I "quit" cold turkey with the patch for about 6months. Then in weakness (smoking while drinking) I started up all over again..... Failed my first attempt, and more or less gave up on the thought of ever quitting. UNTIL I got really really sick (pnemonia) and the doctor told me if I smoked with the the lung infection I could die.... I was getting all kinds of breathing treatment and something went off in my head at the hospital. For the first time I realised that smoking was actually killing me!!! I have never been that sick before in my life and it really changed the way I looked at health in general. I have never smoked a cigarette since....been 3 years 4months...smoke free.

I also have to admit, it REALLY helped that NJ and NY banned smoking in bars at the same time I was quitting. If I can do it anyone can. I have no willpower at all (impulse buy, eat, drink and drink and drink) but somehow I did it.

i quit last new year when my boss offered me a 2$hr raise (to quit) after smoking at least 1/2pack day for years. im not like anyone else ive ever heard of, i just stopped. no patch no gum and no withdrawls. at first i just thought of smoking out of habit, i had my routine, like one on the way to and from work. after a couple months it stopped popping up in my head and thats that. smoked maybe 6 grits in the last year 4 months.
i got too much willpower to get addicted.
also knew that if i was going to get into freeride i was going to need all the oxegen my lungs could get. riding dirtbikes was my smoker sport.

I quit after 16 years of 1 pack a day. February 07 my left lung collapsed. I quit after that. Spent 10 days in the hospital, part of my lung was removed. Have a chest tube put in W/O painkillers. That will make you quit. I did get one month of chantix but never needed it. Still have it in the med box.

Ive been looking for this thread!

Well been on the stuff for 3 weeks. Took it for about a week quit day6-7. Havent had one since been three weeks on pills and 2 weeks smoke free. Hired a kid to help on a job yesterday and were 2 hours in before I even realized he was smoking. He swears hed beeen smoking on and off since we started work but I seriously didnt even realize?!
Most desire Ive noticed has been more something to do than a need for nicotine.

Nothing good comes from smoking It is interesting the next generation does not accept smoking like we did I think all the tv commercial's are doing some good. I am done with it after 22 year's chantix was what I needed.

I quit the cigs more than a year ago. It is the worst to go into a bar and have to smell like it when you leave. Props to anyone who can quit. :Banane09::beerchug: It wasn't easy to quit....i was on and off for years since i was 13. But after going through cancer...you change your perspective. Don't get me wrong i will still toke or smoke a good cigar once in a while if it vacation time. But that ******** slows you down from rippin it in the surf. Lets all put down the cigs and go for a jog. :bananapowerslide:

At first when I read this I thought, how cool! Then I thought about how pissed I'd be if my boss paid the smoking employees more money to stop taking 15 minute breaks every 45 minutes.

Cool for you though, and I hope you thank him for it now! :fing02:

I did it cold turkey too. Only way to go, I could never have "sort of" broken the habit. It's all or nothing and it is (was for me) more than 50% habit and 50% addiction. The addiction is easy to break. The habit is harder.

Yay to the quitters!:Banane01:
