View Full Version : First time teardown - help

Midlake Crisis

Yesterday I went out and rode for a couple hours, broke down at the end of the day and wouldn't start.
Plugs were oily, and it looked like very weak spark.
Brought it home and put in new plugs, no change.
Checked compression: 140 in the back 150 in the front.
Decided it was a good time just to tear everything down and inspect. One thing I noticed - no head gasket was installed? The crank case looks very clean w/clear oil / no water. Cylinders seem smooth.
Here are pics, experienced observations and knowledgable advice ppreciated. Guess I am going to pull the flywheel and stator tomorrow.

deff get a gasket or o-ring on their pending which head you run. your compression should rise.

describe your problem, on why it wont start what are the symptoms and will prob get some more responses.

Each cylinder had a thin red o-ring, but no flat gasket.
I am guessing the starting problem is electrical, sator or coil maybe?
Just wondering if anything else could be diagnosed from looking at the pics.

Looks like I had some moisture get in past the flywheel cover into the stator. Could this condition cause the weak spark?

Your front seal is deffinatelly leaking which is probably causing an air leak. At a minimun, I would disassemble the motor and replace the seals. You will need to buy a gasket kit as well.

Do you think this caused the weak spark condition? How to test that with it torn down?

Just pray my son and it will all be better :bow28:

I probably should pray for help with this project, but I would expect God's help in a circumstance like this to come through natural means, like good advice from knowledgable people, rather than by supernatural intervention. Thanks for reminding me though!

I think if you clean up the stator real good with electric motor cleaner and put new seals/gaskets and put it back together you'll be all set .

Factory OEM gaskets tend to be the best but obviously cost more .

Maybe someone can chime in on how to test the stator .:fing02:

The Clymer manual says you should have .9 ohms green to green. Mine shows Zero.

With oil all over the stator like that. Maybe, but I am no expert. Like what was already mentioned, I would take everything apart and install new OEM gaskets and seals. Clean the stator with electrical cleaner.

Man, am I learning stuff.

Major update: Found out that a 62T case w/ 81mm pistons is a 701, not a 650 Doh!
(That was good news!)

Purchased a digital multi-tester and found out that the stator is pretty close to spec. but the ignition coil is dead (infinite resistance between the plug wires, even right out of the coil).

Got the drive coupler off - that was fun! Did it vertically, involving a bench vise, a pipe wrench, and a swing arm from a garage door opener bolted to the fly wheel. . . . it weren't pretty, but the coupler is off and I didn't break anything. . . .

Got the case open and the crankshaft out for inspection and to replace seals.

Current plan:
Order new pistons and rings 1 over, have case bored to match.
Replace crankshaft seals and all gaskets
New ignition coil
Clean and adjust carb
Starting think about a PIPE!!

I need to figure out if I have the right CDI and electrics for the 701??

Any other suggestions?
