I just recently bought a very clean 800 SXR engine i am going to put into my X2. Well I want to add on a few bolt ones but wanted to get you guy's advice before I buy anything. Here goes:
Timing Advance. I was going to short the air temp sensor but Kahuna said to just get an advance plate. So is that a gd idea? I hate the fact that I will have to run the thick gasket so that anything doesn't rub. I will get an R&D advance plate if you guys recommend it.
Flame arrestors. I would just keep the stock ones but there is fittment problems with them in an X2. I will mainly be doing freestyle and rec riding. I had planned on getting a pair of Tau Ceti's or Prok's. I would of course use the outerwears but they still let water in. Too bad I can't use a set of stock SBN 44 SJ flame arrestors. What other arrestors do you guys recommend?
I also will eventually buy an aftermarket head. I like the look of the ADA but do not like the PITA girdle kit. If i ma going to buy a head I at least want the option of runing a girdle kit. I know with some heads you have to machine the cylinders for the girdle hardware. I also looked at JSU and R&D heads but both have draw backs for me. The JSU is a 4 piece design which leads me to believe it is a bigger hassle ot work on. That is one extra o-ring to pinch. The R&D doesn't have removable domes. I want to be able to adjust compression accordingly. So what heads are you guys running?
Finally I am a bit lost as to what pump setup to try. I for now will be running my 650 pump. Well they are practically identical to a 750/800 pump. Later on I will mate up a 750 pump I have and use a TBM stuffer. I would love to get a Skat but on a stock/limited ski I doubt it is necessary. But what pitch props, brand/type of prop, pump nozzle, and steer nozzle do you guys recommend. I do have a Wet Wolf cone I will be using too.
If you gus have any good reccomendations, I would appreciate it.

Are you running the stock SXR electronics? On the head the JSU or TBM is the way to go. You don't have to run the girdle kit on the JSU unless you have a dry pipe or are running over 185 psi.

Dave, PM Jonnyx2, he should be able to fix you up at any level you want to run or spend$$$$$.
Your stock flame arrestor is fine, I can send some pics, don't even think about using anything else unless you like sucking lots of water. Stock sxr prop modded to fit is the ticket, forget changing the pump, no need.

Yeah stock electronics. TL or an Advent CDI will come way down the road. Just wanting to do a few basic things before sticking the engine in the X2. I figure it is easier to do it now than after it is installed because i don't want to do a bunch of wrenching. I would rather be riding.

If their 04 or later electronics, just loop the air temp sensor as you mentioned. There is no reason to go mechanical unless it's an 03. Plus if you change your CDI to A/M later you will have to remove the advance.

Dave, have the head shaved and put a flywheel on it. you will be impressed.

Have you looked at the TBM heads??? Girdled or Non Girdled looks good and works good, plus he has several options on domes... Also, you can order a thinner base gasket from TBM which will lower your port timing.

Hmm... All sounds good. I like Tim's stuff
What carb setups do you guys like? For now I will run the stockers with a primer and some aftermarket flame arrestors. But down the road I wouldn't mind trying a single 48 or even a set of duals.

The stockers are really good carbs, especially for bottom end.
Also, look into the K&N Race Series FA's, I have been running them since 2004/2005 with no issues, have them on both ski's

Yeah I just wish I could use a set of stock single carb SBN SJ flame arrestors. I will be doing some subs and what not but I won't be getting too crazy. I don't want to hydro lock a $2.5k engine...
Crab what did you do to to fit the stock flame arrestor in you X2? I have another right hand brace to put in. Does that give you enough room or does it hit the hull?
As far as running no base gasket, I am not diving into the engine any time soon. I will get it ported in a few years when it needs a rebuild. I figure a head is just a bolt on job. I won't put one on until probably summer.
I do have a set of R&D Ram valves for a Kawie 750. I would use them but the stock 800 reeds already have stuffers. So I figure the stockers are good enough. Plus I don't want to start changing a bunch of stuff before I ever even ride it.

Plus I don't want to start changing a bunch of stuff before I ever even ride it.Use a left hand brace on the right, minor bending. Just take the stock airbox and clip the corner of the cover, the base will fit fine. I recently glued outerwear fabric over the holes on the bottom as well, and only run 5 bolts to mount it.:Banane35:

In my experience the R&D timing advance is more trouble than it's worth. :bad3: It caused a stator malfunction in my 750 and caused my buddy's 750 to lose spark one day unexplainably. Both issues were immediately resolved upon removal of the timing advance plates. Brandon (owner of Havasu Watercraft) told me that timing advance has a tendency to cause your stator to overheat, and eventually go bad. To be honest, I didn't notice any decrease in throttle response/low end snap after removing the advance. I have a stock 800, and I won't be putting a timing advance on it, because I don't want to have to drop a big chunk of change to replace a fried stator.

I have a PJS one I bought years back. Right now I think I will hold off on putting an advance plate in. I don't feel like opeing the stator up just to put one on. Eventually I will get TL or an Advent with a TBM wheel.

That sounds like a smart idea. It would be beneficial with a full total loss system, but on it's own, the TI plate doesn't give a significant performance increase. good luck!
Have to agree, leave the motor alone and put your efforts into the pipe, waterbox, pump and prop.

Yeah and BK told me how you have to dremel the stator cover some and you always end up wearing through it. Then you have to JB Weld it on the outside. Sorry but I am not paying almost 50 bucks for an R&D advance plate to mess up my unmolested engine...
Crab, I found the pump shaft. It has the short end on it. No collar, sorry. If you still want it, PM Me you address.
I was cleaning the garage some in preparation of building this ski. Well I found parts I forgot I had! It was like Christmas all over again...

well, what parts did you find!

well, what parts did you find!
Jet Works control valve, UMI trim lever, Bull Dog stainless steel bumper, primer T & plunger, flush kit, UMI gas cap, Vilder fuel pick up, Ocean Pro bed plate, Skat 650 9/17 prop among other things.
I have just a bunch of little odds and ends. I think I have enough spare stock parts that is you had an X2 and it died... I could get it running again without missing a piece or two. Look like I better get eBaying! I need to fund the engine and parts purchases.
BK if you are up this way anytime soon give me a hollar and stop by. otherwise I am sure we will be ridding when the weather gets warmer.

honestly, I never get up that way!!!! But will plan to come up to Smith at some point............
we also get some good size rides up here in tuscaloosa also.

Sounds good. I will be at Smith a good bit riding with Gil. I want to go to the Chicken Bine ride. but my check engine ligth has been on for a week in my truck and it is idling rough = more money... I would rather ride 30 times this summer than ride for 2 days in FL. All depends on if Gil and YZPilot go. Might make things cheaper. I am stingy with my vacation days at work too. If there was garenteed big surf but that isn't going to happen. I am thinking I will probably miss it due to money shortages.

I think Gil is coming down, also hit up Jawbreaker, he may be coming from Nashville. catch a ride with them.

the one for the 650

All i have for a 650 is a 9/17 Skat that I will put in my 93 X2, and a Jet Sports 15.5 that is currently in my 93 X2.
I have decided for the 800 I will use a 750 pump, a TBM stuffer, and a Skat Mag prop.
I am not really looking to sell any props at the moment. But once I get the Jet Sports out I may sell it.

No biggie. I was just a little confused. That prop came in an X2 that I bought just for the FPP it had. The prop was icing on the cake. It is in great shape, almost new!
I had a 91 650 SX with a 750SS all built up once. I never quite got it tuned inbetween seizures.. :( I eventually parted it out.

aww man, i got a 750 from an SS in mine and it runs like a champ! with the exit nozzle and everything bored out on it like it is i wouldnt be suprised if it would keep up with my new SXR.

Eff the advance plate, you will just have to remove it later, and you can get the same gains from jumping the air temp sensor, which is easily reversible. However you will get a better performance gain by going to a big hub pump setup, using an SXR impeller worked by IMPROS to be used in the 650 pump, and an R&D afterburner cone...this is the real ticket! Even in my 800 pump the cone made a big difference in hookup/acceleration and I gained nearly 2 mph on the top end with the ported, wet piped motor. And plus the 650 pump is the PERFECT candidate for an afterburner cone because the reduction nozzle bore size is a whopping 83mm STOCK!
dbrutherford

I think I am going to use a 750 SX intake grate cut and rewelded to fit, a 750 pump, TBM stuffer/cone, and a PJS nozzle. I think the nozzle is like 84 or 85 mm! I will have to run a steer pitch prop, and the long cone. I hope it works good.
Any ideas on pitch to use?
