Id like a larger tent, since MRS mouth insists on the queen sized inflatable bed, there is little room left on the floor of our 16 year old 9x9 dome.
BUT, I want a rain sheltered vestibule as well as a larger size, I have not found one that suits my needs yet.

yeah, I recall the one you brought to Georgia, was quite , uhh, compact.
I know what you mean though, with the queen sized inflato-bed in the 9x9 tent we have, Its very cramped.
If it were me alone, Id hang a hammock, and a rain fly..
I wanted to be able to stand up.

This is what we use on climbing trips. Ronny Mac could stand in it, but regular people would have trouble.:veryhappy:

thats a way cool tent Crammit, and Id LOVE to do that sort of climbing thing.
But for me around here, its family car camp, and occasional backpack trip in the winter.
My freinds are too broken and old to go with me, wife doesnt like cold, my son likes it, and we go further and longer every year...
but, an expedition type 4 season tent is overkill for me.
even though Id love to have one!
haha
EDIT: that tent isnt nearly big enough anyway, for her majesty and all of her knee high queen bed....
Did I mention the High thread count sheets we take camping too?
[ its the only way I can get her to sleep outside! ]

This would be the ticket for single person camping. If we start regularly climbing again I will probably get one for when Monica doesn't go with us. The North Face in my last post is nice, but a bit much for casual camping.

only if you have ho-made maple syrup to go with...
have you used that tent yet? youve had me searching all day for a larger tent that has everything I want, and I cant find it!
either too big, or too tall, or not enough rain fly coverage.
so far I like a couple of wenzel tents, and the coleman vela.

Hey Mouth have you checked out Kmart? That is where we got our "Vacation Cottage" Thats actually what its called. Its like 7' tall, has a foot print about 14' by 16'. The bag has wheels on it. peoples jaws drop when they see it erected. I can fit two 7' long by 3.5' wide cots inside half of it and store all our belongings in the other half. I probably don't camp as much as you do though. 2-3 times a year. You might need something more heavy duty. I can't recall what the name brand is. Its buried in the crawl space somewhere. Just my .02¢

I have been searching campmor, and campsaver, and sportsmans guide, and sierra trading post, all the normal places.
I dont want a HUGE tent, too hard to find 14x16 real estate FLAT where I am used to.
9x9 is what we have used for years, 12x12 or so would be about max.
want a porch, but not seeing that except on this one.
http://www.wenzel-camping-gear.com/item--Wenzel-Fern-Ridge-Family-Dome-Tent-w-Screen-Porch-36267--aspentrail
would like to have a covered porch, AND a second door in the back, along with a LOW profile ( 6 feet or under) , and a rain fly that DOES not leave windows exposed.
Ill tape the seems, I can sew and treat nylon.
Im not looking for an expedition tent, but if it rains I dont want to be damp

that was last march, wife and I, local lake BEAVER, camp area Horseshoe bend.
water was WAY down.
funny, we camped there, rode a couple of days, cooked alot, had a fire at night, lantern, all that.
the day we were leaving, a ranger stopped us and said " are yall the ones trying to camp over there? that area is closed this time of year!"
I said " yes sir, that was us, but there is no try, we didnt leave a mess, see ya next year!"
pic from the water looking up.

Thats nice. Wish we had spots like that close by. My wife and I are going to buy a lot on the Osage river, to build a new house, if we can ever find one for sale. Then we won't have to camp we just push the skis into the water and ride. Then take them out and walk to the house. Ahhhhhhh heaven. Then we'll be like Ketsair and not want to leave our house.:nana:

Katie and I were looking for a new tent LOL and it lead us to this the 2008 Ttasca Navion 24' with a Mercedes diesel and it gets 17 MPG. with a tow capacity of 3500 LBS and one bump out now we just need to wait a year or two to be able to afford one used with a few miles on it. I keep the brochure on my desk so I don't forget.

so far im stuck on these two tents.
http://www.coleman.com/coleman/colemancom/detail.asp?product_id=9161-121&categoryid=11020
simple, easy to put up and take down, just like my old one, but larger, good fly coverage, cheap $69, the door is offset, so I dont open the door and fall right onto the air mattress, this is a BIG plus to me.
there is only ONE door, and no porch though.
http://www.wenzelco.com/details.aspx?NavID=291
this one has a porch, but its an odd configuration, not sure the queen sized bed will fit into one of the 'rooms'
I need to break out some right triangle trig with the floorplan pic, and do some calculating.

I really like the porch on the Fern Ridge and the gear loft.
Mouthfulloflake
01-28-2008, 11:53 AM
I think most of them have the gear loft, and electrical port/vent now.
the floorplan of the fern is an odd layout, im not sure it offers much more room for a queen bed, to warrant the extra few poles and tie outs to set it up.
I LOVE the simplicity of the 2 pole, no tieout required dome tents.

here is a little tip.
Tents dont really keep you warm.
they give you privacy, protection from insects, and some SLIGHT protection from breezes.
unless you have a tent with a stove jack, its pretty much the same temp inside as it is outside.
get a better sleeping bag!
or one of these.

Pros:
It's really tall inside.
It only has one room so your air barge will fit.
- - - - - - - -
Con:
It's a little pricey.

$200 is a meager investment.
the tent its replacing is 15 or so years old.
thats only $13 a year, I figure we sleep in it at least 5 times per year, thats less than $3 each use.
Its a bargain if you look at it that way

granted, a $40 tent from walmart with a $10 seam seal job would suffice, I want a FEW added features... I THINK.
Need to weigh the benefits, and more thoroughly evaluate my intended usage of said shelter.

When we went to Lanier in "06 we needed one. Here is a tent that we picked up at target for real cheap, it was only like 70 bucks. Its an Eddie Baur brand tent so its not a top of the line one, but it is very nice, big, and easy to set up. It can fit alot of people and has a screened in front porch area. The pic doesnt show a good view of it but its the only one I have of it lol.
Mouthfulloflake
02-19-2008, 11:45 AM
I saw that one, I think its a "greatland" brand there also.
I couldnt find a birdseye dimension view to see how a queen mattress fits in side.
Wenzel makes a tent very similar layout ( two angled rooms towards the back) and it wouldnt accomodate a queen bed effeciently.
Its got all the features I want though, back door, screen porch.. a little skimpy on the rain fly coverage, and the reviews were less than stellar.

Well the rain cover works very well, when installed properly lol. We absolutely love the tent and my wife is pretty picky. She also will not sleep on the ground, so we had a queen size air mattress on top of a gold up bed frame and it fit in the one room in the tent with room left over to change and stuff.
Mouthfulloflake
02-19-2008, 12:05 PM
I suspected that from teh reviews, folks dont know to seam seal, or how to properly guy the fly out.
are there doors in the back of the tent?
can you give me a basic idea of the size shape of the tent floor? ( NOT the screen porch)

Its basically a 2 room 1 porch layout. Its 16' w x 15' d
There is a room seperator too so you can make it one big room or 2 seperate rooms.
The center height is 6' 6"
Here is a rough Layout. You can access the screen porch from the 2 rooms too.
I dont remember if the rain cover covers the porch or not, if it doesnt it's pretty easy to fab up something that does.
Mouthfulloflake
02-19-2008, 12:32 PM
Hey thanks, that helps!
Now from your photo, the porch looks almost as large as the tent area.
so in my drawing, is this distance in red, around 8ft? ( thats more than half of the front to back distance)
guiness92
02-19-2008, 12:38 PM
Yeah thats about right. The porch is pretty big, its the only flaw to the tent that we saw at first which made us hesitant to buy it, but the rest of the area is very big, and we ended up using the porch way more than we thought we would. Like I said earlier too, you can easily fab up a cover for the porch then it can actually act as another room.
Mouthfulloflake
02-19-2008, 12:43 PM
I gotcha, the tent we have now is 9x9, and its crowded, those rooms look like smaller than 9x9 each, so I will have to decide if thats actually an improvement over our current thing ( other than the porch)
I think Ill just leave the wife at home and bring my hammock.
