Here's my ski after the Daytona ride. At that point I had prop, intake, cut stock rideplate, pro-tec trim(up all the time), footholds, front strap, straight bars, -4 handle pole, -1 turn plate, tubbies, bilges & scupper.

I ride down the line more than anything and like my ski loose & light on the nose. I run my trim up all the time, shortened ride plate & tubbies have made it fun in the surf. Looking to bring the nose up more & loosen up the tail I did some shaping of the tail & lost 1/2 the rail from the front of the tray back.

It's a surf riding thing:biggrin: I tried footholds but they did'nt work for me.

I drilled and mounted the pole bracket and painted the hood. I rushed thru it and have many runs to sand out.

After feeling the difference with a cut rideplate and tubbies I started having ideas of other hull shapes. The tubbies make the nose wider and make a big difference on trun in. I thought a norrow tail would make it come out of the turn quicker. The top on the SJ is wider than the bottom so I started there. Most of my riding is slow carving S turns and not concerned about how it handles at speed.

Finally made it out today. First run I ran for a couple minutes, forgot hose clamp on cooling to pump, and after that poped off it ran dry until it overheated:banghead: Ran to a friends and leached some tools & clamp(thanks jd) & back to the beach. Got to ride enough to get a feel for it but had some fuel starvation problems. So far it's a handfull. First couple of blasts it just wanted porpoise & pop out of the water. Started to figure where my weight needs to be and realize my straps need to move forward. With the shaping and the curved rideplate it really brings the nose up and makes it loose in the tail. The short pole works with my stance good. I like to ride with my pole light in my fingers and down around my knees. Befor I could only get so low until my knee would hit the bars. The back strap is working for me. The 1 tiny reentry I did I sucked my tail up and came in straight up & down. I'll need to get used to my back foot staying glued.

I've been able to ride a few times a week for the last month and starting to feel comfortable with my ski's handling. It's really light in the nose and fun in the surf but alot of work to go stright fast. I tried that curved rideplate a few times but it had my nose riding too high and just wanted to jump so changed back to a cut stock. The -6 in. pole is working perfect for my stance. Last year using a -4 in. pole my front knee would get locked in the bars limiting motion and punishing my knee. Using a back footstrap has locked me in better than the front strap did. So far I'm liking the changes but I'm already thinking about the next mods.

got to ride some overhead clean surf this morning with good pitching lips that were good for stalling under & reentrys. Had a fun hail mary barrel ride I can't believe I came out of:woot: and a big reentry landing flat in front of the wave bottoming out my pole, knees & butt hard:woot: now my dumb pole is cracking on the bond line:banghead:

Got a email back quick from XFT saying it's a finish issue & not structural. He also told me not to worry that the pole is 100% warranteed & I'll get a new one if the crack increases.

Wow, amazing... Can't wait to here how it rides..

I'm curious why you shortened it, when you do not like riding with the nose up (reason you said you didn't use the curved ride plate)? Shortened hulls will ride with the bow higher out of the water.

Highroller
05-29-2007, 11:23 AM
Looks awesome. I think you will be riding very nose high. You may want to glass some inserts into the rear so you can bolt on some hull extensions if needed.

joe b
05-29-2007, 10:25 PM
Glassed to first side & started cutting & shaping on the other.

I'm thinking it's going to ride high on the nose but... I like ridding with my weight in the front of the tray, that's where my wide point is. The rail is shaped like a surfboard with a soft rolled edge in the front to(in concept) have water rolling off settling the nose. From the wide point back the rail has a sharper edge to hold more water hopfully holding the nose down some. I'm looking for slow speed mobility & stability. I'm thinking this will piviot quick from the middle & have more response from weight transfer. It works in my mental simulator, I'll see how it goes:biggthumpup:

yamaslut
05-30-2007, 07:28 AM
Joe, this is the craziest handling mod I have ever seen... I want video of you riding it when you are done, cause I am really interested in seeing the attitude of the boat when you try to turn...

some thoughts:
I thinking the width in the rear of the ski will hinder your ability to turn w/o the pump comming out of the water... and flat landings will be even more brutal... You will be very nose high because having width in the mid area is gonna cause lift just like having it in the front.. Plus, removing 3.5" off the rear is gonna really make the ass end loose... this thing is gonna be like one of them discs you sled down a hill on... I really want to see you ride it...

joe b
05-30-2007, 07:59 AM
If this works out I'll get some befor & after vid to compare. At worst I'll have some opinions on what works. If the nose needs to come down I can either norrow the nose or widen the tail.

I did'nt consider how harsh flat landings might be but I should'nt be in the air anyway. My knee are shot, bone on bone, with no cartilage left. Hard compression swells my arthritis & binds my leg:frown:

I did consider that this shape will want to ride higher in the water and will swap ends easily. It could be what I'm looking for, or not. :cat05:

today I cleaned out the foam from the inside of the tail & removed the ride plate mounts from the peices that got choped. I also removed the rail lip from the rear & the wedge riser over the pump. I'm trying to lower the tray as much as possible. The pump hardware will end up exposed in the tray & be level(maybe concave) 550 style. I added a few layers of glass to one side of the tail from the inside & epoxied in 1 of the rideplate mounts. A little more glass to the other side then the tray.

It's fun:biggthumpup:

It's super loose but really stable down the line. I was using hardly any steering inputs to turn but need to learn to bury the rail on hard faster turns. I did have the pump losing traction when laying into a hard turn but I can learn to work with it. It rides with the nose lower than last year & the tail floats higher. I can tell because my exaust is out of water more & louder. Last year it was really light in the nose & for airs & reentrys I really had to throw my weight forward. The few I did yesterday were effortless. It turns quicker, handles better in the steep stuff & more stable. It does things it would'nt befor:woot: I get some vid soon:biggthumpup:

I ordered all my stuff thru their web site. I'm not using the ride plate... If you want it make an offer. Also you might want to try a 4 lbs. battery. I just put one in my boat & that's the best weight savings bang for the buck there.

All boards you see made for freestyle are short and fat.. No matter what sport. windsurfing, surfing, kiting, snowboarding and all wake sports...

That's what I was thinking:cool2: I'm getting a feel what it can do and I'm lovin' it:Banane01: On the wave I'm going through steep transitions weight forward & on the gas where on a normal ski I'd be off the gas with my ass hanging off the back & still be nosediving. I've learned how to make it go fast when needed but it's a handfull & there's no relaxing. Flat water I can carve turns all day draging my chin & sholder. I'm looking for a good size hollow day to see how deep in the pocket I can hang:biggrin:
