What is the easiest way to post a higher quality video. It is in AVI form and is about 7 minutes long. (I did a search, but didn't find anything):sad6:

You have to have a web server to upload it to that doesn't screw with the quality like youtube or myspace. How big is the file?

1.15 Gb.

1.15 gig for a 7 min video is huge. You can get that down tons for internet use without losing quality

Re-render in .wmv in Windows Movie Maker and tell it to fit it in 100mb or so, it'll come out very high quality but a reasonable size.
BTW, you can send the video to me and I'll stick it on my site for hosting if you want with the others. www.yousendit.com works for bit files, plus I have an upload tool on here at www.x-h2o.com/upload/

Definitely use Windows Movie maker to save it as a .wmv file. You won't lose any quality. Here's a cut and paste from an email I sent my dad earlier this week. His digital camera saves clips as .avi too.
open windows movie maker
file
import into collections
browse for file
click and drag clip into timeline at the bottom
file
save movie file
choose my computer
tell it where to save it
choose size or quality you want

djkorn1 sent me a PM about this. By my calculations on the file size and run time it's probably a mini-DV camcorder format AVI file. We are working on him sending the file to me.

It is edited footage made as an AVI from Pinnacle Studios. It only has 2 settings (AVI or Mpeg). Mpeg looks like crap.
I don't have Windows movie maker.
I will probably send it to rasper, but it says it will take 6 hours. :dunno:
It is an actual first edit from JT-IV: Eastside Freeride of the Southern Fried Freeride. I just want to get some opinions from people.

Get tpmgenc. Re-encode the file with the standard settings.
That's my quick solution to getting the file size down.
Also, ffmpeg is another free encoder, but doesn't seem to work well in windows. Seems to work OK in linux.

I have a ghetto (hacked) version of XP. I found some more settings in pinnacle and am re-rendering it at 98mb so I can youtube it. Hopefully this works!
Thanks for all the help...I might need more!

Even hacked version of XP come with movie maker, or atleast can be added through add/remove programs, window's components. Then access it in start, all programs, accessories.
If you can in Pinnacle, encode with divX. That'll save space.

Divx is a codec. It seems to be the best compression ratio that I've found, but don't quote me on that.

Now that I'm back from getting my car fixed...
djkorn1,
I am responding to your PM here so I can attach a JPG with some settings. I got the 90 meg MPG you uploaded. Nice work shooting the video! Now we need to give it the care it deserves.
I converted the MPG to FLV (Flash Video) format. I uploaded that here:
Click here for that video (http://www.barry-blanchard.com/movies/jetski/freeride/2007_12/clip1/flvplayer.html)
FLV is what YouTube and most other video web sites use. It's all about how it's processed.
We can do better than that video so let's get going on that.
Your PM mentioned uploading the 1.5gig AVI. Here is what I would like you to do instead.
1. Download RIVA FLV Encoder:
Riva FLV Encoder (http://www.rivavx.de/index.php?encoder&L=3)
2. Use RIVA FLV Encoder to encode an .FLV file using the settings in the attached JPG and your 1.5 gig AVI as the input.
3. Hit the preview button and see if you like it. The bitrate of 2000 should be fine. If you want higher quality increase it to 3000 and change the output file name. You can see a difference if you look real hard but it's not worth the increased time it takes for people to watch it over cheaper DSL.
4. Upload the FLV file you are happy with to my server and send me a PM that you did.
I will put that bad boy online and it should rock big and bad!

EDIT: Try encoding the video in pinnacle and reducing the screen size to 320x240 and see what the file size is then.

I slapped it upside the head a few times and put it on Youtube.
Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgewhg2E5lo)
Not as good as what I put up on my site but not bad for Youtube. The splashy water scenes crap out but the rest is fairly survivable. It's all about how it's processed.

I replaced the smaller video with the big one he sent. Much better:
Big video (http://www.barry-blanchard.com/movies/jetski/freeride/2007_12/clip1/flvplayer.html)
It's so big you might want to hit play then pause it until the progress bar gets like a third of the way across. Otherwise it might have to re-buffer a few times.
That's why I don't turn my videos up past a bitrate of 2000 even though the quality is better. It's important to have a smooth viewing experience too. Just for reference a DVD you would buy at the store is around a bitrate of 5700.

Now that the excellent quality video is up it's time to go back and cover some other stuff.
Windows movie maker is installed when you install XP service pack 2. If he is ghetto, has had it installed a long time and is not doing updates because he is ghetto he might not have movie maker.
If Pinnacle is working for him what the heck. Edit, save as AVI and encode to FLV. Next he can get some web space and use FLV player:
FLV player (http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=JW_FLV_Player)
on the web site to play it.
All I did with his FLV video to put it on my site was:
1. Make a folder on my web site.
2. Edit one file in FLV player to tell it what size (640X480) the video is.
3. Upload the five FLV player files and his video to the folder.
In regards to web space I'm on Comcast and they just turned up personal web space from 25 meg to 1 gig. That's 1 gig for each of the seven email accounts you can create. That would be 70 movies like the one he just made.
The Dreamhost web hosting Superjett mentioned somewhere seems like a pretty good deal. I am very tempted to change to it in the future.
Movie maker isn't that great. It was Microsoft's attempt at competing with iMovie that had come out on the Macintosh. They try to make video editing too easy. Video editing is hard and time consuming.

If what I have in accounts receivable was in my bank account I might have considered it. Anyone who has run a business can understand that concept.
This year I plan on skipping the World Finals and going to Pismo instead in October. My brother is even planning on going too. If I'm on a position to do it the SFFR looks like fun from the video. I would attend them all if I could.

You could put an ISO image of your DVD on the web for people to download. With Dreamhost's ridiculously huge amounts of stuff they give you over 1000 people could download it a month.

Your not giving enough credit to Movie Maker. I have seen some amazing videos come out that were done with movie maker. Personally I use Vegas Video and tried to let DJ borrow it but it destroyed his ghetto version of windows :banghead: sorry about that again DJ. Editing movies, IMO is not hard at all, just time consuming. If it werent for movie maker, there wouldnt be a youtube.

I love editing videos and making them move with music...however, I hate all the technical issues that seem to show up when you do them. I am not very computer savvy. While I am editing, I actually keep my computer offline so I don't get a virus or crash or have an update to the editing software kill my current project. I put about 22 hours in that little 7 minute blurb, so I am careful not to lose all that work. (It has happened a lot). I also don't spend a lot of money on equipment or software (Old version of Pinnacle 9) and a $30 ebay analog camera so that probably makes my job harder. I love the editing capabilities of Pinnacle, but it is a chunky program. The newer versions of it really suck (They made the program 3x as big to put in a bunch of advertisements for effects updates!) and they crash all the time, so I have been sticking with what works. I am still learning and still having fun with it...:1244:

Movie maker is a OK for someone starting out to get a taste. For a couple minute Youtube clip it would be OK. It's amazing what the right person with enough dedication can do with any tool. I would like to see examples of the amazing videos made with MM.
If you plan to do something an hour long like DJ plans to do and have it look good better tools like Sony Vegas start at under $80.

Sounds like you need to re-install windows from scratch to get a fresh start. It's a lot of pain but would save you time and frustration with your editing in the long run. Wish I was closer and could help.
Something you can do that might help is save often with a new name each time. Something like adding a version number to the end of the file name helps. Using version numbers isn't just so you can go back for creative reasons it's also good if you get a corrupted save.
Other things you can do are save, exit the program and restart the program. Most all video editing software is sloppy using RAM. This takes a few minutes but can save a lot more time than it takes. If you are going for an all day edit a reboot or two through the day doesn't hurt.
You might want to see if you are running out of RAM. Video editing loves RAM. On the task manager performance tab if you are under 10% free on physical RAM Windows will start choking.
If you are low on RAM 512 meg of most speeds of RAM is under $40. You said funds are tight but working a few hours somewhere to buy that would save you time even if you subtract the work hours.
Being frustrated kills your urge to do the project and affects the quality of the project. If you want something special done for openings or closings let me know.
Now for a little taste of what the right tools can do.

I am good in the RAM dept. Most of my problems were when I had my old computer. I haven't had a crash yet editing with this one. I am still overly cautious, however. I am not going to change programs. The one I have is working great right now, so I am going to stick with it!
Thanks for all the advice. If I have any issues I will try your solutions. I allready do multiple saves and do a lot of data burns on DVD in AVI format. I have hundreds of blank DVDs so this gives me a hard copy that can't be destroyed.

The issue with 2500 bitrate is broadband connection speeds and web hosting performance. The reason I think he needed to go 2500 was he shot the video without a tripod. Although it was very steady for hand shot it needed the extra bitrate to make it look good.
I usually use 1600 bitrate for 640X480. You can tell it's not perfect but it's a long way from Youtube. I give my riding buddies DVDs anyway.
I was playing with JW FLV player that I use to put it on the web today:
JW FLV player (http://www.jeroenwijering.com/?item=JW_FLV_Player)
I upped the number of seconds it buffers at the start from the default of three to ten just now. That should help.
Youtube video is almost easy. Good video is hard!

I don't have any external hard drives. All the video is on Analog tapes and I just put them in the computer one section at a time through RCA jacks in my video card and then I edit that section. I think I am going to start putting it on an external drive because I am not sure if I will be able to fit the entire 24 hours of video that I took on my computer at once. It will be close.....but I want ALL the video to be able to be accessed when I start making the beginning and ending (They will kinda be summaries of the whole movie)
