i read the different threads about fx-1 pump conversions. but i cant decide between the 144mm or the kawi 650 pump. i know everyone says its easier for the kawi pump but does it do the same effect as the 144 pump? i mean enough to be able to tell? plus i want to run trim...thanks for thought

I am in the process of putting a 140mm kawi pump in mine using a skat 13/18 large hub prop and TBM super pump cone. I have some pics I'll be posting soon.

Shorty, Make sure you address the issue of sealing the rear of the pump cone. Since the TBM and the R&D pump cones are made for the SXR there's about .160" of a gap to address. The way the R&D tail cones fit it was pretty easy to make a spacer out of the old stock Kawi cone, not sure how/if that'll work with the TBM.
Pics of spacer....

I started tearing my ski apart today and Gorilla and I are going to flip it over and start with the 650 Kawi pump mod. I will take pics as we go and update everyone on the progress. Mike

P.S. My pump and R&D toploader are for sale if anyone needs one.

i've got a 144 coming my way soon. it' going to be shipped to bob. i need some idea of what prop to run, i don't want to lose any topend.
i don't need monster bottom end since i only weigh 125.
i have a complete 650 pump sitting on my shelf.

I'm working on my next ski (Kawi 650 pump) and just fit the pump into the hull. Here's some pics to give you a good look at the hull mods.
First you need to remove the stock pump shoe and then grind away the stock front pump mounting surface to make it level with the rear mount surface.
special fx

Once you have a level mounting surface, then you can work on the pump shoe area. I make a cardboard template from the Kawi pump and then mark the hull with the template as a target.
Then it's grinding time! It took me about an hour of grind, test fit, grind, test fit, etc, etc... to get the pump to fit properly.

When the pump is in the right spot, the rear edge of the pump shoe will be flush with the edge of the pump bulkhead (where the waterlines and steering cable come out) and my R&D Scoop will bolt right up. I also have a pro-tec scoop and it doesn't line up like the R&D. The R&D has a oblong rear mounting hole and that lets it bolt right up. If your using another type of scoop grate you'll probably have to elongate the mounting hole.
Just need to do a little final fitting and then glass it up, drill four new mounting holes and done....
Good luck with your's.....post pics!

Hey JD, mine is looking exactly like yours. I did hit foam on the curved duct area on both sides. I think I will dig it out a little further and then put a layer of glass and resin. Also I am just starting on cutting out the mounting area. Thank god I read through all the posts again. Found out I need to keep my toploader so it is not for sale. Thanks. Mike

Did a couple of bearing housing setups for the Kawi pump mod today. I thought I'd post this pic to show the progression.
From left to right:
1 - Stock Kawasaki bearing housing
2 - Kawi housing with the center cored out (I've found a hole saw in the milling machine or drill press is the easiest method)
3- Stock Yami housing and the newly machined Kawi core (Turned to 2.045" diameter in the lathe)
4 - Two complete ready to go conversion housings.
I machine the Kawi core for .002" interference fit and then freeze them and press the core into the Yami housing. Once the core is pressed in, I epoxy the rear of the unit to seal it. The epoxy is probably over kill due to the interference fit, but what the hell?

I've read all the posts I can find on the subject and it looks like the 650 conversion is a good way to go.
The motor I am building hopefully will have 62t cases, stock sj carbs, group k ported 61x cylinder, and b-pipe.
Do you think this engine will over power the 650 kawi pump?
It just looks like once one pump goes in it would be tough to switch over to the other.

It's the same pump that the 800 SXR uses and up to the 900 Kawi sitdown, so I think it'll hang. I'm running a ported 61X with Wetjet intake and 46mm carb and B-pipe and it has no problem handling it. The R&D pump cone and SXR setback prop really makes this pump come alive.

ZXI 900 or 1100, they're both the same. No shaft mods required.

Here's a couple of pics to show how to line up the pump for mounting. In the first pic, you use a straight edge to check the pump height at the pump shoe. It should be less than 1/8" below the surface of the hull (ref the red line in first pic)
Once you've established the height of the pump shoe, you need to check the height of the rear of the pump. When the pump is at the correct position, the tip of the pump cone will be 3.5" from the flat portion of the hull just below it (as shown in pic 2). This is where you want the pump to suit when mounted for proper driveline alignment. And obviously, centered from side to side.

specialfx, i just put the 46mm wetjet setup on my fx1.
mike at northwet set it up with 120-150 jets, 2.0 n/s, a 95 spring at 18lbs pop off.
sound about right ???
i have no idea on the adjustment screws ???
i dont have a b pipe header or chamber yet, but i did put the 61x b pipe exhaust manifold on with a kawasaki 650sx stock pipe.
you may of seen my post on the exhaust install.
i did look that other post over on modding the stock 650 kawasaki pipe too.
once my motor-pipe are done and dialed in, the 650 pump is next in line !!!
good luck

i'm just wondering why guys aren't using a 750 pump. glue the pump shoe in and no more hassling with sealing the pump to the hull when your changing a prop.
i pried my shoe out on sunday (fx1) and i'm going to start grinding. if you go to 144 it looks like you'd come thru the shoe slightly at the top.

Its easier to mount the existing grate to a 650 pump.

i need to correct myself. if you grind your fx shoe to 144...you won't have a shoe left.
thanks kevbo that's what i have found out.

Update, I went with the 650 pump. It rocks. Wasn't that hard to install, i bought the bearing stuff from Special fx, and 900zxi shaft from a guy on pwc.
100 times better then stock, and will be even better when i get my cutback sxr prop.

Hey harcore. what am I missing to complete the 650 conversion?
I have x2 nozzel
650 pump with impellor
zxi 900 kawi shaft
i have no bearings yet. special has them or you sent him parts to change over?
necesary to buy some glass stuff? i have no experience with glass work? What is necessary?
How much time for the conversion?
can i reuse the fx1 inserts or just screw into the hull to mount the 650 pump? I'm guessing the inserts must have glass to keep them in?? I'm clueless on that part.
I can't wait to try it out. I bought a superjet so I'll still be able to ski while working on it. I miss the fx while useing the superjet though. It carves better on smooth water. It also has smoother throttle response. the superjet has a low power spot in the beginning of the throttle. It effects how I can carve since the power is necessary to pull out of carves (leaning).

Hey there,
About the glass work i didn't do that part. The whole conversion took me and my glass guy around 3 hours. I just used a 650sx ocean pro nozzle, no x2 trim.
I bought my bearings new from special fx since he had a set built. Not sure if he has anymore or if you will have to find the parts and send them to be machined. I'm to lazy to find my parts so i bought already built. I didn't have my fx-1 insert so i pulled a set off a 550 and they worked great. I would imagine any would work with the right bolts.
Other than that u should be fine. Just follow all the directions on here and u should be good.
It was pretty simple and my protec intake mounted right up, no issues.

Ok thanks. Do you remember which parts had to be glassed? I'm thinking the inserts to attach the pump (4)? Oh and possibly the pump shoe or maybe that can be epoxied in.
I can't wait to finish this mod.

your going to need to reshape the pump cavity, where the new pump interfaces the hull. Your also going to need to relocate/ reinforce the inserts and reglass where the pump interfaces the mounting location.
