It doesn't say a thing about how he suffered the injuries.
"power ski", meaning one of those surf jet thingies?

I was about 100 yards away when it happened... it was a rental ski and the dude was flirting w/ disaster riding right in front of the Poce Inlet rocks in surf that was extremely dangerous at best....

Unfortunately (hate to hear of anyone ever getting hurt or killed obviously) sitdown rental and surf pretty much explains it.

OK Jett , Since you seem to know all of the details. Did he hit his head on the ski, end up on the rocks, just plain drown, not wearing a vest or hit by another ski??

Two guys that were not experienced riders went out the mouth of the inlet in 12ft surf and one got ejected and drowned. His buddy picked him up after he had been floating unconscience for several minutes. he was dead before he got out of the water... Coast Guard went out to look for him, but it was too big for them to even go out in... I've only seen the inlet like that a few times.... scary **** for even a rider like me, i can't imagine going out there on a sitdown w/ no experience....
I'll get all the details from Beach Patrol and The Fire Dept...
This type **** pisses me off.... I think the Rental place should take percaution and not let people out in conditions like that... Small craft advisory, sorry, no rentals today, or make them stay in the flats somehow... I bet they probably were not suppose to be in the surf anyway.... who knows... Something needs to change though...

Alway sad to hear of fatalities. There are alot of people that think these things are like go karts at the local mini golf park. Not to mention those big craft are so easy to operate that you become delusional and think you're a pro. Alot of people don't take the rental operator seriously when they tell them to follow certain rules. I've seen it so many times where people completely disregard the saftey advice they're given. What pisses me off the most is that these people are not even PWC enthusiasts. So were as a group a being screwed by outsiders.

That's too bad. I hate to hear anything like that. You are right, the rental place should known better than to rent a ski out on a day like that.
Nick, do you have to have a safe boaters cert. in FL to rent a jetski? Not that it would necessarily have saved him, but more just out of curiosity...

Sad to hear, but unfortunately inevitable. People just don't have enough respect for the power of the surf. Don't they remember getting rolled and sucked under by a three footer when they were boogie-boarding as kids? What do they expect it to be like in surf like that, and with an 800lb machine to hang on to?

Its sad but true. Even here in little Lake Erie we lose people to the waves. Inner city kids that never learned to swim and then when they get a little older they go down to the beach and try to swim in 4-6 footers. I saved a kid last year that jumped in off of a little peer by our riding area and did'nt realize that it was like 6 feet deep with waves crashing down on him. He was instantly freakin' out.

PWC should not ever be rented out. You don't see Motocross bikes being rented out. Just too dangerous, especially for inexperienced riders... The rentalls ALWAYS cause problems on our beach.
Makes us all look bad... Hopefully they will ban the rentals in the Ocean and not try to ban all skis in the ocean.

right on, except when i go on vacation and dont bring my ski i like to rent one and ride> HMMM. maybe they should only rent to people that can show proof that they own a pwc already. J/K that is a stupid idea

We have a rental PWC rental place down here (friends of mine) and they specifically tell all rental operators "do not go out into the open ocean." Having said that, there is no way to prevent someone from not listening to rules or guidelines.
I've seen my share of FNG's ridding in big surf with bad results. One time I got lucky because some idiot washed his PWC deep into the jetty rocks. He walked away and said f'it...insurance and I ran home to get my tools. Amazing what you can do with a hacksaw, 10mm/12mm/15mm ;)

Sure, explain the 1000 tow bill they will get if you catch them in the ocean.
What gets me is that in places with license requirements they somethines waive them for rentals. (Dont know if thats the case in FL). So if you own one for 10yrs+ you need to go sit through a class but any yahoo with $50 for a half hour is good to go. Dont get it.

In Florida there is a PWC boating law (for rental or private). This law was passed in 1996 and requires all operators born on or after September 1980 to pass a mandatory "boating safety" course (can be done online).
The problem with this (or any) law or course is it doesn't take any real world issues into consideration. The reality is you can't read common sense.

How does that work for rentals? Does the rental operater give the test on the spot?

i think a guy shish-ka bobed himself in the head with his handlebars several years back. the lifeguards say that's why they make us wear helmets at the beach zone.

How does that work for rentals? Does the rental operater give the test on the spot?An honest and legit rental operation will. My friends PWC rental biz had a computer at the store that would let the user take an online test. If they passed the test (trust me, its not all that easy) they would be able to get a print-out certificate. Many failed or gave up on the 60 minute course.
I don't know about the inlet but this certainly isn't the first time someone that rented a PWC got killed. Sadly they had a couple of (famous) incidents and those were caused by recklessness.
Most rental accidents are NOT reported. This is because they are usually caused from two rental operators crashing into each others PWC and only causing hull damage (maybe stitches). In those cases the most damage will be from the depleting wallet.
For years I've always told them "PWC rentals" will kill our sport. At the very least result in added legislation.
10 years ago I was run over (from behind) by a "friend" on a rented PWC. I was lucky because I was floating still while they mowed me down. Lucky because I saw them at the last second and only suffered $400 of parts damage and a bruised arm for a week.

All the rental places that I've seen actually make you follow a lead operator around. There is no off course riding either. It's much safer than what I believe the case maybe here.

I had to quit swimming and try to get another riders attention. finally someone pulled me into shore.

experienced ride Bull ****.
Melendez rented the power ski from Short Money Jet Ski Rentals at 4940 S. Peninsula Drive in Ponce Inlet. Melendez, who grew up in Puerto Rico, was an experienced rider, riding power skis in Panama City when on vacation with his family. The cause of death has yet to be determined
experienced rider is someone that as a PWC not someone that rent time to time.
I'm experienced rider I have several PWC so that must make me a veteran rider since I have been riding in the early 80'.
