View Full Version : X2 hull sponsons
What do you think about me developing a set of X2 specific sponsons that are a bit more aggressive than currently availiable designs? I'm thinking about working on that this winter now that I have a spare hull to cut patterns off of and experiment with.

what do you mean by more aggressive? wider?
Probably wider, perhaps longer, and follow the hull outline better, by no means a copy. One problem with the X2 is the narrow front, and wide rear, looking to make a sick wave shreader. If you look closely at this picture, you can see how the front handles the water.

Yes, and I am not his .....o nevermind. I personally have not tried the regular ones, but know they were not really made for this hull, thus room for improvement. My hull reshape from last winter made so much of an improvement in overall ride, I think I may be on the right track. I have had not one complaint about handling, and may take the next step. Pete took the X2 to the next level, I'm just trying to improve on his ideas. Did I mention parts that have the hull curve built into it so there is no bending?

Well if you make your own, maybe its not a bad idea to make some type of deal built into the front sponson that would make it a simple bolt/glue/rivit up job. Like a built in extender tube or something??? I dunno, just plant the seed in your head and let it grow....

CPRman and I are talking about pulling footholds and a few other things as well, it really depends on my time this winter, I have the heated shop. If I get a working sponson prototype I am happy with, I will send a pair to somone for the east coast sea trials.

Crab have you taken your 2 X2s out to the flatwater for some side by side handling tests? I'd love to see how a stock X2 hull handles compared to your moded boat.

My hull was damaged considerably on the left side and left bottom, the side has been repaired except for the very front part,I will probably be doing a mod similar to Crabs on the bottom of the x2 this winter,it would be easier than trying to put the stock hull lines back in I think .I may change it up some but it will be similar for sure, thanks Crab for showing us the way.

The stuff I used is called PVC foam.it came from Farco Plastics,The neat thing is that the whole sheet is about $85.00 .It is thermoformable with a heat gun or for smaller pieces putting it in an oven at 150 degrees for a very short period. That is how I formed the curve to the hull, you heat it and form it on the hull while it cures, takes about a minute or two.The pic below is what the sponson looked like before it was installed and glassed on,as you can see it was two seperate pieces that were cut out ,thermoformed and glued and screwed to the hull then glassed over and faired with west system filler. The first one was reshaped fter I installed it,on the second one I did most of the shaping before I installed it.
Pre curved, fit is good.:thewave::thewave::thewave::thewave:

:Banane09:Actually Victor, I'm not certain that a plug is really the right way to go about it. It would be hard to foam in behind it solid, and you would still need to glass it in.

For now, didn't know Louie had them in the works, and for the price its just hard to beat. He did a nice job on the design, as they are pre curved and almost just lay down. They will need to be foamed on the back. Time is the one commodity we all seem to be short on.

Crab, how far down on the hull are you mounting yours? I did mine almost flush with the outer chine and now wondering if I should have left it up a little. Not sure how this is going to affect the handling (turning).
I'll have pics shortly.
I plan to hold them down as well, here is a pic I took of Pete's just before we left on monday. They seem to have more flexibility as to where you can put them since they are made a bit different.

Yeah, I have mine much lower than that. I just found the best spot which followed the contour of the hull. The end is about 5" past the open footwell.
Oh well, too late now. I laid some epoxy filler on the edges to blend them in.
Hopefully I'll be making an appearance at Daytona next year. Looks like you guys had a frickin blast.

Pete's are about even with the stock hull in the front if you feel or look at it, mine hull is almost even with the outer chine. So, I raised up a bit in front, but not huge, pics to follow.:smashfreakB:
Step by step, foam, fit, epoxy thickened with cabosil, SS screws, remainder of epoxy thickened with fairing mix for putty while wet, tomorrow sand and paint.
Last one, you can clearly see the reshaped hull and the added tubbies and why I held them up a bit.

Find your spot and secure the front, then drill and screw the back (mockup). They will pull in with ease. I just went and measure; it was ~1" off the hull in front and ~3/8" at the rear. Having not messed with Blowsions product I don't have any frame of reference.
Okay, now I feel better. I am able to press the ends in by myself. I read that you used #8 oval head screws but what length screws did you use? What about the back end where the last screw could come through the foot well?

Rode with clonies on today, can you say "crazy turn guy". With the short rideplate cut to the first rib and the hole gone, she would turn on a small dime, but had some issues with rollover at moderate to high speeds. Sacrificing great turning for stability is probably an asset when surf riding, but not great for zipping down the glass water in the river. Note; new primer location and hand warmers.

DO YOU THINK THAT IS JUST A RESULT OF PLACEMENT OR JUST (oops) or just the nature of the new design?
i'm wondering if it's placement myself front to back?
looking at a pic of the hull it maybe that yours are a little far back not allowing the tapered trailing edge to do it's job of directing the flow back to the hull at a more centered location. we've talked about the height issue and are both on the same page there.

Its not the sponsons at all, there is virtually almost none of it in contact at higher speeds. I'm sure its the ride plate being a bit too short, it just screws up the tracking at higher speeds and allows the hull to do wierd things. Really doesn''t matter for surf, as you are always turning and jumping at slower speeds anyway.

It is probably the ride plate,I have the extended plate on mine and it is dead stable at wide open speeds,it also turns like a mofo,I haven't tried the stock length plate yet or a d -cut plate.I may just go with a stocker first,I am not sure about the d-cut.Maybe I can borrow one from someone at the freeride and check it out.

I will be trying a few different plates this spring to find the one that works best on glass water, or perhaps make one from glass. The stocker has a few degrees of downforce built into it and the stupid braking hole, my PJS is flat with the hull, I would like that in a glass/carbon version.

Its not the tubbies, DEFINETLY the ride plate. Mine tracks great, my brother's (cut an additional 1.5" off the back and rideplate.) is ALL OVER THE PLACE at high speed. I have my motor out now and I'm chopping another 1.5" off the back. Turning and loose handle far outweight high speed stability. Plus I'm advancing my timing so much I wont be able to hold the throttle open wide for more than 10-15secs.
