Just for reference, single 46SBN:
180H (2 turns)
112L (1turn)
2.3n/s
black spring (17-18psi)
Since I dropped down from 120L / 190H (ski ran like crap, hard to start, and spit black oil everywhere), my 780 has been running VERY nice. BUT, I have never had the chance to plug chop/rpm check it. I have put 10tanks through the ski since the jetting change, and besides when one of my waterbox hoses blew off, it has been very powerful and I have been overall very happy with the performance. Today, due to obligations locally, I could not take it out to the surf to ride. So once I finished doing the work on my dock that I had to do, I decided to take the 780 out on flat and do a few plug chops just to sanitiy check it. What I saw surprised me alot. After a few 10-15 WOT runs the plugs were VERY light tan to almost whitish. It looked pretty lean to me. This is with a 180H, 1 turn out. So I cranked it to 2 turns out, and the plugs didnt change much!!! But the ski seems very slightly more snappy.
What baffles me is that the ski smokes alot, and the exhaust side of the ski gets covered in black soot from the exhaust after a ride or two....Worse than any ski I have seen. I dont understand how I could be lean with that big of a main jet and having it opened up 2 turns. The plugs have 3 rides on them.
Anyone have any ideas why? I dont do alot of WOT runs more than 10 seconds, but I dont want the ski to be running too lean, as I want to start advancing the timing some soon.

Shawn... had the same experience with my 180 hi jet..... never got any color until I went up to 190 and 2 turns out. Runs like a champ now (When I'm not burning up my CDI ) :)

Have a 190 on the way. Get this.... The ski was ripping hard yesterday in the surf, for the first 45min run. This was the best it has ever ran. I was amazed! Then my brother took it out for 30mins. After that, it felt sluggish, and sounded like it was hitting a rev limiter @ WOT (even though there isnt one). Not a REALY big difference, but noticably lazier snap and seemed to hit max rpm earlier. I brought it in... and it looked like the front plug boot was slightly loose. I tried zip tieing the boots onto the plugs... And filled the tank backup and rode. For 1min it seemed fine again, then it started sucking again. I think the plug boots are getting loose and causing a weak spark. What boots is everyone running? Has anyone tired the MSD boot clips? I think a JSS CDI service/swap is in my future.

Went completely through the carb today. Sprayed everything down with carb spray. Didnt look too bad. I changed the N/S to a 2.5 and used a 65G spring. Left the 112L and installed a 190H to see if I can get rid of the lean condition I am having. Will water test tomorrow and update.

Its late october in Jersey, no other boats out...NOT ONE! COLD out and RAINING!!!! My brother and I took the skis out to the spot I normally only dunk the trailer to test, and we rode for less than 20mins. State police rolled up! I could not believe it. They were very cool and just gave us a warning, but I was shocked they were still patrolling the area this late in the season.
BTW:
2.5ns and 65g spring is the @^#$^ in a 46SBN...lol Ski was hitting with twice the power than before! Tommorrow if its not pouring rain I am going to take the skis to a place I can actually plug chop, and check the jetting. My 780 still feels funny on the TOP...TOP END. Will know more tom.

Could Be Bad Wires , Or Replace Spark Plug Boots They Have A Resistor In Them They Go Bad, Bought A Waveblaster That A Guy Was Selling And He Was Having No Luck With Weird Problems Always Thought It Was Carburation But It Was Bad Wires,

Thats my next move. Sending a few CDIs out to JSS for total rework. Hopefully thats it.
I like the MSD lock on's, on my SJ it was the only way to keep them on. Also be sure you run solid top plugs, they work much better. Get my boat dialed in for Daytona,......he he he...I still can't believe I had the only X2 in the known group at Pismo last weekend????

Your boat is actually running great. Swapped the reeds out today and it rode awesome after. The turning is complete ass (89 direct) but I will work on that that next week. I might swap the CDI out tomorrow on the 780 with a spare just to see if that the issue.
Solid top? I am running BR8ES.
Let me know what it takes to fix that, I just picked up an 89 hull in Pismo for a spare.

JSS reworking does not work good in the salt. I have had a ton of problems with mine.

Get out, not sure who else to go to. I'll just send one for now, and if thats no good I'll have to spring for a new oem.

Rode 2 tanks today. Had the glassiest conditions on the bay that I have ever seen. Wind was nuts though. So glassy, that during plug chopping my brother cut the motor well over 50 feet of the beach...but he did not lose any speed and beached the ski almost 10feet in. Amazing day for tuning.
Holy @$^& what a difference it made lowering the popoff!!! THE SKI HITS ATLEAST 15-20% HARDER. Finally it is hitting like I expected. From a dead stop I can vertically hop it way out of the water with throttle only on glass water! It stomps my small pin now.....by ALOT! Plugs still looked kinda lean with a 190. So for the second run I put a 200H in. Have the plugs nice and tan @ 3/4 turn out. I cannot believe I am running this fat of a jet and I gained performance...!!!??!?!?!? No idea how that worked. But I could not be happier with the ski right now. We ran both x2s for a few hours today and they both rocked. So next weekend out to the surf for the real test.

shawn, do you still use that camel hump seat on your x2?
On flat water I do. In the surf it slows me down too much getting back on. If I build my race x2 this winter, its definetly going on there. Its a great seat for plug chopping/carb tuning....LOL I can sit and actually read my tach.

Go with an OEM coil
Swapped the CDI out yesterday with a spare I had laying around. Problem with my "missing" top end seems to be gone. I am definetly going to invest in a NEW OEM coil for the next season.

They were 1 day apart and I test rode between steps.
1) The rejetting I did on Friday, got me the insane low end. Top end lack of RPMS and intermittent missing was still there and annoying.
2)The CDI swap was on Saturday and that fixed the top end "missing" problem I was having. I dont think the CDI itself was at fault, I still blame the wires/boots.
Friday night it was just around 68 degrees when we rode, the low end jump was there! Today it was 50ish and the low grunt was still there just without the hit or miss TOP end problem I was having. This is a night and day difference as soon as I changed out the N/S and spring. HUGE difference.

good work; i raced 550 s in 1993 and 1994 most common problems on all the race skis improper popoff on carbs and bad wires , i have a mod 550 bought new coil, oem coil that comes with new wires and ski runs great remember some of these coils are over ten years old they break inside

I really think the small wire on the CDI that connects to the exciter coil was the problem. It was just in sorry ass shape. Funny sidenote, the cdi I am running now was from and 86 hull that someone was throwing out on the side of the road. I drove by and saw a "TAKE ME FREE" sign on an x2...LOL For an X2 addict thats just a taunt!
