View Full Version : Hard Starting?

My 550 has a primer but still seems to take a while to start. I am not sure how much fuel it needs to start, but this thing seems to flood easily. I usually prime it once, let it turn over a few times, then hit it again to get it going. Then once its warm, I give it full throttle and crank it. It rolls over and kinda coughs then goes. I have been told a Mikuni Super BN carb will give more power and start easier. What size is best for a 550? Also, do they fit the stock manifold?
Thanks,
Evan

I normally pump the primer 3 times, no more, no less. never did it with the 550 motor though, but I don't think it really matters.

It seems to take longer when I prime it more than normal. But I'll give it a shot when my new starter gets here. My friend's 650 w/ a Mikuni BN starts w/o a primer shot tho. I'll have to experiment.
Anybody know what size Super BN works best on a 550?
Thanks,
Evan

ya sbn are way better... but you will need a few things for the carb.
k i recomend a 44mm and depending on what mods your motor has the jets and all could vary.
you can use the stock 44mm mani but you will need a spacer to have the fuel pump not hit the block.. you can find them on ebay.. you will also need longer bolts.

fuel pump? Do the sbn's need fuel pumps? My motor is all stock. I was told 44mm by another guy too.
I'm thinking about just rebuilding the stock carb.
HOw many primer shots should it take to start it?
