What was Yamaha thinking when they mated a 6000rpm engine to an 8000rpm pump? Their fluid dynamicist must have been drunk.

It happens to be the same size as the old Kawi 440 pumps.
It is a real mystery why they actually invested in the development of another (smaller) pump for the FX when they had the Superjet pump sitting on the shelf????

Stock is 122mm. This winter I'm putting a 140mm kawi pump in mine. I owe it all to Special FX. He did the swap and has a great write up in the driveline section. I will post pics when I get started. Thanks again Special FX.:bigok:

My next big upgrade will be the pump. I'm going to try to put the 144mm pump in there. I've been told, night and day difference. But what will I notice? I want more low end, I don't care about top speed, its plenty fast enough for me as it sits. I already have the usual upgrades minus a enhancer and port work.

with your b-pipe and head , you should definitely notice a difference , but with a stock motor you wont notice any difference. thats why they didnt need to put a bigger pump in the fx-1, there isnt any improvement with a bigger pump on a stocker.

then why did they put a 144mm pump on the SJ with the same engine? i dont think the difference in weight, between the fx1 and SJ, merits a 22mm difference in pump size. it seems to me as though yamaha had some R and D cash to spend.

I gotta call BS on that one.......
my fx still has a stock pump....but when I hop on a SJ the BIGGEST difference I can feel is the thrust...
a SJ can cruise around @ 1/4 throttle, the fx needs to be kept at 1/2 or 2/3's.......
then there's the whitewater hookup.....it is NONEXISTANT with the stock fx pump
if there was no difference, a SJ would have gotten the smaller pump as well......
I feel like putting a 144 pump in the FX1 is the equivlant of putting a mag pump in a SJ. Whitewater hook up and recovery were improved alot, IMO.

The very first day I rode My FX-1 (in 1995) in the surf I was totally disappointed with the hook up. Ever since that time there was a ongoing battle to figure out a way to make it work. It's all better now. :cheer:
I do notice one thing, When I ride with 3 or 4 of my other FX buds (boats with varying modifications) on a fast creek ride is when they are out of fuel, I have like 2" from the bottom left in my tank. I'm running dual 48mm Full Specs that are supposed to consume more fuel than a single carb....?? :dunno:
better pump efficiency? No complaints there...

Yaa when I still had the 122mm pump I noticed I went through the fuel faster 2 like 1hr of riding I get like 1 3/4 hrs now

I think so. With the stock pump, when landing an airiel, I was on WOT. I would say that the motor is not working as hard now.
How bout a mag pump in an FX1?

The MAG pump 1" setback w/13-18 swirl = Drag slicks...total traction. Playing in the foam is fun. Unlike before....avoiding that stuff.

My Mag is an anchor... I ride flatwater, my SJ came with it (140mm 12 vein) inc. a Sato nozzle. The only difference I can tell from my 144mm stock pump and the mag, on my SJ, is the weight of the mag.
Have my 144mm FX1 still under construction, and I am sure it will be a huge difference. Though I ride freestyle mostly, when running the buoys with the FX1 and it's 122mm pump, I'd cavitate accelerating through the turns or even when nailing the throttle at a set-up wake. Even bigger motor for next year, so 144mm pump was mandatory.

We really should start a new thread and compile all the FX-1 pump upgrades in one thread. I've read a few different ways of getting this pump to work. From custom bottom's made, kawi 140mm pump, adapters, or what I hopefully plan to do, which is to enlarge the intake as much as possible, and then reweld the tabs where I need them.
How have you guys installed the larger pumps?:poke:
tricky1 has a 140 mag in an fx.......
i ran a 140 12 vein in a SJ for awhile and the whitewater hookup was insane...the

Would some of you guy's post a little info on how you did your FX1 144mm pump mod ??? Can I just cut the mount's off a sj or WB1 pump & weld them ??? Can I use my stock FX1 drive shaft ??? Which impeller should be used on an FX1 with mod's ( fp,msd ) ??? Thanx !!!
