Not a rock crawler, but here is my 99 Sahara. I had it up for sale and had a guy offer me $500 more than I paid for it 3 years ago, but I decided not to sell it. Come Summer and Winter I always consider selling it, but then once Fall and Spring rolls around I always kick myself in the ass for wanting to sell it.

Todd... killer rig. If I lived anywhere but florida I would build something like that.
After I sell my jeep Im gonna start a budget moonbuggie project with a 4.3vortec, 38s, dual steering 44's, and I'm gonna try to keep the whole thing under 1800lbs.
Ill probably be building 2 at the same time so it might be an all summer project.
Then perhaps Ill take it out there for a trip... =D
ToddW
10-06-2007, 06:17 PM
edit; Saw you meant D44's and 38" tires not 44" tires :P
I wouldn't even consider running a D44 w/rear steer people can't even get them to live with 37"s up front let alone in the rear. My bro's rig was on D44 and 37"s before and broke numerous times not even getting it.
38" TSLs + Steel rims weigh a ton too, AL rims lighter but I don't think your gonna do 1800lbs unless you can drop $ on bling parts that can live.
Be sure to post pics :)
My rig is a lot smaller than my brothers, 39.5", and all buggy... hope it's done by next weekend.

The plan is to make the body only 8-9 feet long and ~4 feet wide using 1 1/4 dom. 1/4 elip rear and 4 link front. I think I can hit around 1800....
At that weight, a d44 will hold up....
I have CTM joints, and wagoneer (which will be fullsize for this small) axles are ALLL over the place.
And your right, 38s might be a little big, the original plan was for 36 iroks, but my friends trying to talk me into 38s.... I prefer the 36" though....
ToddW
10-06-2007, 09:51 PM
I know guys who've built light buggys with a sammy motor and d44 non-rear steer rigs and they didn't hold up. Trust me a rear steer d44 with CTMs and even CTM 300M shafts will NOT hold up, especially to a 4.3 chevy.
BTW: Have you ever driven a rear steer rig? They require a LOT of thinking/work to operate optimally. Not to mention the extra parts tomake them wrothwhile. IMHO you only should do rear steer if you compete... if not it's not worth the headache, extra cost, weight, and parts. Think about it you are not penalized for backing up on a trail so rear steer is not really that big of a deal. YOu also are not building a 4 seater on 44" boggers that needs rear-steer to get around the corners on a narrow trail.
BTW: Lucky on the cheap axles! Out here on the west coast D44 and D60's are $$.

well.. who knows what ill do. If it comes down to it I may not do it, but that was the original plans I drew up were with rear steer. Most likely Ill just get the set of waggy axles and throw the rear in there until I go further on the project.
Are you kiddin me? waggy axles I can get 3 of any day of the weak for 75 each.
Now on the other hand Ive had a busted ford 44 shaft in my TJ, that I cannot find a replacement for local if my life depends on it. Its been busted for 6 months, still cant find a new one.
Basically anything fullwidth except a 10bolt is unheard of down here in FL... but waggy axles we got.

my NORMAL offroad rig is my 4runner, my decade long project is a 79 CJ5 that my son and I cleared room for today in the garage.
CJ5, fresh amc360, 6:1 T18, Dana 20 FSJ amc20 rear axle, and FSJ dana 44 front axle, 4.56 gears, got welded and lock-rights for both ends.. probably end up welded rear, lockright front.. both uncut, fullwidth, springs are outboarded, combination of Cj rear, wag fronts, and Yj springs all around... im too lazy for fancy suspensions.
35-36" tires are the goal, when I started this project, there were alot of places to ride around here, now there arent, so.. it will be a fun topless ride, and pull the skis to my lake place, and serve me that way.
got a soft spots for the Full sized, and CJ, and older jeeps...

I know.. I never really finnished the rear, it still needs the brakes done, and the 96+ disc swap would only be about 300ish.. and as far as the CV's go.. im eventualy planing on upgrading from a LP-30 to a HP-30 from and XJ.. or since Im not going to be driving it for a while, ive been considering building a 960 for the front.. oh, and i know what coilovers are.. well, dont worry about it. When I did my first 8.8 swap a couple years ago I did a 92 axle with drums cause i couldnt find any 95 up with disks. 2 weeks later i found some, and just grabbed the outter brake assembly. Everything swaps over. You can get it at a junkyard for $60 easy.
Make sure when you build a hp30, that you get the non vacuum one, and then truss the ******** out of it.... will really help you out. And since your building it you might as well build it right. Theres a prefabbed one on ebay from macco or mako offroad. all you gotta do is weld it on and its a good stiffener.
and its calld a 609... lol :highhorse:

Ya, my 8.8's outa a 95 exploder.. couldnt find any discs.. and every yard ive been to they either dont have any with discs or there already gone.. I cant even find any 96+ ZJ's with discs.. as thoes will swap over also..
and ya, i know to get the non-disconect, the ones without the cast UCA.. but in all reality.. if i was going to truss it.. I might as well just get a better axle.. only reason a HP-30 is nice is because it bolts in.. 30's bring the suck with a V8.. and 44s are only marginaly better.. so IMO, my options are HP30, HP60, or "609".. otherwise im probably wasting my time..

Yeah, (note: big-ass rig is my brothers) my rig im building/having some built I was planning on competing it but not sure if $ will allow. It cost a TON to tow that thing all over the central/western US.
My rig, I bought the chassis and some other parts from a previous competitor in Cal Rocs you've probably seen my rig w/previous owner in 4Wheeler or Petersons. It was yellow here's some pics. 1 (http://4x4shots.com/displayimage.php?album=52&pos=37) 2 (http://4x4shots.com/displayimage.php?album=52&pos=36) We cut off the frame at the firewall to rebuilt it 100% with 1.5" DOM, also and ditched the leaf springs and front dana 44. I'm going with a 3 link front with summit machine (http://www.summitmachine.com/index.php?p=customParts&cp=jj) 1.25" heims/jimmy joints, king coilovers, king air bumps, Dynatrac Pro Rock HP60, ARB, Dana 60 Longfield CV 300M shafts (http://www.longfieldsuperaxles.com/), Station/POS Double Ended Hydro Ram, Dedenbear C's and Knuckles.
I also added some headers to my 302, and also have the pressurized oil resevoir eletrconic delivery system... basically if I go sideways or over to much it will inject oil into the engine preventing it from burning up before I turn it off. It basically gives you 10-30 seconds (not sure how much yet) of run-time at severe angles so you can run w/out killing it to drive out of bad situations.
A couple of my friends compete in XRRA and I know numerous people who compete in We Rock and used to compete in the Cal Rocs series.

You jokin?
609s are the greatest thing alive! you get the baddest ass differential ever made for commercial use (and Im excluding the eaton 1 1/2 ton) and the strength of 60 outters with CTM shafts!?
No way a straight 60 is better. and for the rediculous prices 60s are these days its not much more to have spider customs make you one (or diamondback)
ToddW
10-08-2007, 02:48 AM
Sorry, I thought the stuff SpyderTrax sold was all 9" I didn't realize their knuckles and C's were 60. ;) I'd go SpyderTrax 60/9 if you want to go 60/9... but that's some uberlight stuff and you are gonna pay :P Just like 60 stuff heh. It adds up quick! I think I have around $5k or so in my front end and that's buying everything at cost too.
I'm sure my dedenbear, prorock, 300m combo will be fine. I only broke a few 35 Spline hubs on my other jeep with the 60 front end and 40" MTRs. And the 20lbs or so weight savings from the spydertrax outers wont matter enough for my trail rig with 100lbs of tools and spare parts lol. :pat:
I had CTMs and Superiors but Superior took 9 months to get my custom shafts so I ended up upgrading to the LongField CV 300m shafts. Sold my CTM joints and kept my Longfield 300M U-Joints for hte 60 as spares, I'll eventually get Superior shafts again for a spare set but from what I've seen these 300M CV Shafts from BObby are holding up to a lot more power and tire size than I;m putting them on.
I'm running 39.5" Krawler Stickys. They are saweeet, I was able to take them on a couple trips before I sold my other rig heh. I need to find me some 42 or 44" TSLs or Iroks (42) to put on my "snow rims" since it's already started dropping a couple inches here!! I'm hoping we have an early season I LOVE snow wheeling.
Anyway, I could go on and on about 4x4 stuff lol.
If you ever need anything hit me up!

actually thats the one weak point in the 9" unless you have a daytona bearing suppport. But the design of the gears (and the pure size) is why a 9" is so strong. theres twice the actual contact space between the gears on a 9" than there is on a 60, and unlike any other differential, the gears actually become stronger (rather than weaker) as the gear ratio goes up! This is the one reason the absolute disadvantage (the horribly low pinion) becomes a huge advantage, AMAZING gear mesh angles.
This is a great read. Whether or not your axle swapping. Anyone wanting to know about gears... this should be a MUST.

If I start breaking pinions in my front axle I'll be impressed. I did cryo them, more for the hell of it than really really worried about sheering a pinion. Out here on the west coast we don't need the whole wheel speed thing to go someplace our rocks have traction :P
I know you are trashing the 60s but have you personally ever broken a 60? I've full throttle attempted many rocky ledges, etc, in 2nd gear in my old rig and my `79 HP60 w/35 spline throughout held-up fine other than hubs.
The new rig will have more power and sticky tires but with the 300M shafts I think I'll be fine.
My rear is a shaved 14b w/Detroit actually... one of these days I'll get the ARB for it, damn things cost way to much now :( I remember getting a 60 ARB for around $600 when I built my other rig, stupid price increases :(

Building a 9" that's comparable to a 60 that only cost 1000 to 1600 the 9" cost more in the end. Stock 9" stuff != 60 stuff in terms of strength and usability.
