Well here it goes. It's seems recently I have been at the Vets offices than I have to my Doctor's Office.
My (Short Bus Kittie) Kubota broke his foot playing chase with the kitten Saki Sunday Evening 9-23. I brought him in Monday 9-24 afternoon to my Vet. She took an X-ray and told me that he has fracture. She gave him pain medicine, a sedative and kept him over night, so she could get better X-rays in the morning. Tuesday Morning 9-25 my calls me after reviewing the x-rays that I need to take him to a specialist. She gives the little guy a morphine patch and antibotics and sends him home. My husband picks Kubby up from the Vet. They tell him that they will call and setup the consult and call me back with the appointment. I wait for Wednsday no call. I call today Thrusday Morning 9-27 inquiring about the consult and her asssistance tell me she will call me back. I get a call from The Vets assistance at 12:30. she states the Vet is speaking to the specialist right now, and that I can go ahead and make an appointment with him. I get the number and I call to make an appointment. The specialist only sees animals Tues through Thrus. Today is all ready booked so now the like guy has to wait until Tuesday to be scene.
I'm frustrated because my Cat has to wait 9 days with a broken foot because my did not to what she told me she was going to do. The pain patch is only good for 5 days.
Making things more complicated the poor cat only has three toes on this foot and two of the toes seemed to have fused together because of the aputation.
Is 9 days too long to wait to mend a broke bone on a Cat?

cats are pretty indestructable
you probably saved a bunch of $$ by NOT seeing the specialist
one of our cats broke his leg and they put a cast on it. he hobbled around a while and then was fine. another cat was hit by a car, crushed skull, broken face and jaw.
they wired him back together and sent him home to die.
a week later he was eating dry catfood with his jaw wired shut!
5 years later he is still with us.
One eye is completely black and he drools a little when you scratch him, but that is it. cat will be fine

Well I will still see the Specialist. I'm just hate to see the little guy three legged. Even with the fused toes he was able to jump in the cat tree and play. I would like him to be able to walk and climb as normally as he can.
I'm just frustrated my Vet dropped the ball and the cat will have limited moblity because of it. Just feel bad for the little critter, I know how feels not being able to get around.

I would be afraid to do that myself. Now if it were Jarrod I would use Duct Tape and let him go.
My main concern is 9 days too late for a surgen to do anything about a broken bone on a cat?

I brought him in Monday 9-24 afternoon to my Vet. [/IMG]
1. Go to the closest Animal Hospital in the area, say it's an emergency, let them take care of the cat.
2. Find another vet.
3. Post your old vet's name and this story on some animal message boards.

I got burned by a 'discount' vet once. I had a vet I was happy with, but my wife had a coupon for a cheaper vet. Cat got a prescription that called for a dose 20 times more than she should have received, I got a bill, and then a week later the cat got a kittie sized pine box.
I was telling a buddy about it, and before I even told him which vet it was, he told me that a vet killed his neighbors cat and told me which one it was. Suprise, suprise, same vet. Then about a month later, that vet shot, yes shot, a dog that was in his yard. The dog belonged to a good friend of that same friend of mine. I know this sounds made up, but it's the truth. I'll get that vet's name and post it on here.

Well this no discount Vet she specializes in Just Cats. I have been going to her for awhile. Four Cats in the house she has been getting alot our business. Especially past few months.
Saki (the kitten) was ill when I got him. Two trips for him Shots, and Meds, Third Trip to get him Neutured.
Alley & Max - A month ago, Ran high fevers for a "Virus of unkown Orgin" Both of them would not eat and had to be put on IV's stayed at the Vet three Days. The Vets assistance had to come to my house to pick them up because I wasn't able to carry them, because I was one legged at the time.
Now Kubota with deformed foot. That he has broken agian.
Finding another Vet is not so easy for me. I don't trust my instincts.
I have the X-rays. I'm just concerned that if I walk into another Vets Office that I will be told the same thing "I'm not able to do the surgery, you need to a specialist" What disappoints that this could have been avoided if the clinic did what they said the would.

He goes to the specialist tommorrow morning. I have X-rays from my regular Vet. I think she was reluctatant to operater on his foot because of the previous injury. I took his Morphine patch off Saturday and started giving him an oral pain medicine until the appointment.
The little guy has been walking around and getting on the furniture just fine. Kubota has always had an odd gate since the amputation of one of his middle toes on that foot. From the x-rays it looks like two of toes are fused. The new break is up farther on the foot. I'm not sure what the specialist can do at this point but I will still take him to see. If there is an oportunity to to straighten out his foot, I will do it. I know the foot hurts him because he is not doing his usual zoo monkey routine.

There's still a chance of fixing. Usually they can do surgery up to 10 days later. Sometimes they elect to just keep the splint if things are aligned well enough. It seems odd that your other vet didn't at least splint (did I miss that in your post?) until you could get the kiddo to the specialist.
YAMA CAT
10-01-2007, 04:35 PM
No she didn't splint it. I thought that was odd too. But I think it is because is foot was deformed from the previous injury. My husband has taken picture of his X-rays. Poor little guy has worse x-rays than me.
Odd Duck
10-01-2007, 07:34 PM
Yeah, I think I would have splinted that, at least temporarily. They're usually a little P'd off about the splint, but more comfortable with it stabilized. It is actually very difficult to do surgery on cat toes, they are too small to do much with. I'd be a little surprized if your surgeon did anything other than splint, honestly. Maybe they have smaller plates they would consider using, but not too likely. Anything smaller than what would go on a person's finger (even a child's finger bones are much bigger than a housecat's) is too small to plate. Finer bones can be pinned, but aren't usually in a foot. The other foot bones act somewhat as splints and an external splint usually lets it heal up as well as anything can. Let me know what you find out tomorrow.
Good luck to you and your puttytat.

Kubota's new nickname is "Tiny Tim”. The specialist told my husband that is not whole lot we can do for him. It's seems that Kubota aggravated the old injury by playing chase with the Kitten. Doc said he had decrease bone and muscle mass in that leg. Of course Kub had to show off his one legged jumping abilities by jumping onto the counter and getting into the sink. Doctor prescribed glucosamine for little guy. I kind of knew what the outcome would be. I just wanted a second opinion.

Omega 3 fatty acid caps or liquid can also help. Cats get about 1/2cc once daily to every other day. Most cats take it well in food, some need it squirted straight down the hatch.
Sorry to hear there wasn't more that could be done, but some cats do really well with glucosamine and omegas. I have given a few cats Adequan injections, but it is off-label use and not much documentation on it. I've also used it in a couple rabbits with a little improvement noticed, if it doesn't cause problems for them, cats usually have no problems. Dosed by weight.

Ouch...that doesn't look very comfortable.
Hope everything turns out ok for the little meows.
I understand where you are coming from....I would do all you have done for my pups as well. The hubby probably wouldn't...he wasn't very excited to see the bill from our beagle's surgery after he had eaten 4 *cough* little products from the bathroom and they stopped up his intestines.

The glucosamine and omegas can these be purchased through a pet supply?

I like to do extra omega. With that food you should be able to do the 1/2cc every other day. You can get it from any grocery store, health food store, etc. Fish oil capsules or liquid are the same thing, or you can use flax seed oil. Cats usually like the fish oil. Salmon oil is really good.

try to mat train them ....but until that happens we will have to walk all the way up the dock and onto the grass ..which I'm sure I will get sick of rather quickly.. especially on rainy mornings.

We should have grilled him 2 fourth of Julys ago, when he was a young tenderling.
He's a full grown 12 pounder now and probably too chewie and gristlie. He does have a nice pelt though. Hmmmm.
Yamacat, I know what you are going through, maybe. I had an cat called Kevin D. Katt, Kev for short. Kev was unfortunately run over by an unknown vehicle and came home a bit tweaked but not obviously totalled (thought he was in a fight with my other cat, as usual). The next morning his gums went blue and he was quite lethargic. I took him straight to the vet and he was rushed to a cat ICU in Brisbane (capital city of where I live). Cost was never a factor. It turned out that he had multiple broken ribs and his abdominal organs were forced through his diaghragm then put undue pressure on his lungs and heart.
The vets put him back together like Steve Austin and he was almost perfect. Except he had wierd lumps on his sternum and ribs, and a tendency to attack toyota drivers. (joking about the toyota bit)
We got another three years out of him until he decided to take on the neighbours greyhound/cattledog cross over territory. That was sad, especially for my daughter.
I guess the moral of this story is that when you take on a pet, take it seriously, as you do. The money I spent on Kev's first rebuild nearly paupered me and I would do it again.
Kev's slightly older mate, Baron, is a fhooken vocal 9 yr old black oriental who has a serious attitude problem about everyone except my immediate family and to a lesser extent, waxhead. He has facial scars from encounters with bush possums and/or snakes, he likes to home deliver live brown snakes and bearded dragons and his latest trick is to yowl lowdly whilst peeing on the shower mat. (maybe he has gono?)
Anyway, all the best with the cat and they are surprisingly resilient. Also, If she has to be put down, allow three days for the medication to break down before you eat her. You don't want to get ill.

Sounds like one scrappy cat! Aren't brown snakes piosonous? My spoiled lazy thugs, would never resort to manual labor.
Kubota is the middle child. He has always been a little special. Not the smartest of the animals but alway sweet and very active. His injury definitely bother me, more than it seems to bother him. I'm sure this will not hinder his quality of life, just slow him down a hair.
Thank you, everyone for sharing. Some pretty cool cats out there with good parents.

This is often a sign of a urinary tract/bladder infection. Take him in to be seen (if you haven't already), you'll be glad you did. They often progress to peeing on the bed if you ignore this symptom long enough.

A woman brought a very limp duck into a veterinary surgeon. As she laid her pet on the table, the vet pulled out his stethoscope and listened to the bird's chest. After a moment or two, the vet shook his head sadly and said, "I'm so sorry, your duck, Cuddles, has passed away."
The distressed owner wailed, "Are you sure"? "Yes, I am sure. The duck is dead," he replied. "How can you be so sure"? She protested. "I mean, you haven't done any testing on him or anything. He might just be in a coma or something." The vet rolled his eyes, turned around and left the room, and returned a few moments later with a black Labrador Retriever.
As the duck's owner looked on in amazement, the dog stood on his hind legs, put his front paws on the examination table and sniffed the duck from top to bottom. He then looked at the vet with sad eyes a nd shook his head. The vet patted the dog and took it out, and returned a few moments later with a cat. The cat jumped up on the table and also sniffed delicately at the bird from head to foot. The cat sat back on its haunches, shook its head, meowed softly and strolled out of the room.
The vet looked at the woman and said, "I'm sorry, but as I said, this is most definitely, 100 percent certifiably, a dead duck." Then the vet turned to his computer terminal, hit a few keys and produced a bill, which he handed to the woman. The duck's owner, still in shock, took the bill. "$150!" she cried. "$150 just to tell me my duck is dead"?
"The vet shrugged. "I'm sorry. If you'd taken my word for it, the bill would have been $20, but with the lab report and the cat scan, it's now $150".

Sad news today, I let Notjoe out this morning as usuall at about 8:30, and found him lying next to my truck about 11:00.....expired. Not really certain what happened, he was lying spread out on his side with his eyes open. The only thing I found was an open gash at the base of the tail, but no other obvious marks, rigor had set in.:Thinkingof_:

Crab...I know all too well what you're going thru. Sucks to find our furry friends have left us without saying goodbye.
I currently have a stray that "adopted" US 3 years before we moved to Georgia from Michigan 2 years ago. He has IBS and cancer and has recently slowed his eating down to nearly nothing. His spirits are good but his body is slowly shutting down. He's been a great cat.
It's hard to say goodbye.
