The breed is "Long Haired Peruvian Satin" the wife needed something to love and it aint gonna be a kid, so the cavy was the next best thing...

I love this little creature already... so soft and cuddly.

She will be a beach going little surfer pig...

Ever see that episode of the old Star Trek...The Trouble with Tribbles.....

Guinea pigs are funny. We 'babysit' one named Trixie whenever our neighbors go on trips. She doesn't have the Peter Frampton hair-do though.

Trixie is very laid back and is basically a 'lap pig'. Whenever we have her here her feet never hit the ground because one of us is carrying her around. She even gets along with our dog. She is calico, except for her face which looks like it was dipped in chocolate.

a dog is a real pet

real expensive...

I considered a dog, but that is a prety big comitment... I had cold feet at the last minute even getting her... I am so scared of having pets... I don't know why... The thought of something relying on me for food and care is pretty scary...

dogs do have personalities that are more pronounced, but I'm not looking for that... I want something more subtle... They are cool by themselves in a cage and you can play w/ them a couple times a day.... I go off for the day... she will be cool ok...

Update:
It turned out Ginger was pregnant we we got her....

Anyway we had pups over the weekend... Man that is tremendously stressful.... I am a total freaking mess today. She had 2 pups and one didn't make it... We named him "lil dude" and buried him in the back yard where he will always be remembered... It was probably the saddest thing I have to do in a real long time and its still kicking my ass... The good thing is one lil guy made it and she seems to be doing really well... she was nursing and eating hay the first few hrs (pigs are born fully funtional, no batteries required) so we are sad but happy at the same time... I'm just sooo worried about both of them now... I just hope they are gonna be ok. Sara is taking them both to the vet tommorow and we'll get them a good checkup..

SHe weighed 101gm at birth and is 102 today and we are keeping a journal of her prgress so we can see how fast she grows... I'll get some picks of her..

Oh yeah, her name is Cassi

PS: our pig died that way ! FWIW Enjoy your Cavi They are the only animal that can eat one ounce of food and shi* two !!

Yeah, it'd be like a human having about a 20# baby proportionate to body size. And G pigs usually have 2 that size.

Cute pics, Nick. She looks great.

I don't agree with the pumice. If a G pig is fed a correct diet, they don't need pumice and it can cause impactions - really bad! Most people feed way too much pelleted diet and alfalfa, not nearly enough grass hay and greens. They also tend to feed too much fruits and treats.

in order of amounts:
I feed her Romaine, Cucumbers, Iceberg, Carrots, Alfalfa, Timothy Hay, Pellets, Apples, Pears, Oranges

she absolutely loves Romaine... I got Parsley and cilantro today... you told me or I read that it has lots of good stuff... more than lettuce..

Cavies should get around 50% grass hay (Timothy, orchard grass, brome grass, mixed grass), 40% DARK, leafy greens (Romaine, turnip greens, mustard greens, Swiss chard, leaf lettuce, spinach, parsley, cilantro, carrot tops, etc. Don't bother with iceburg - mostly water, minimal nutrients compared to dark leafy), no more than 10% pellets and other veggies (broccoli, green beans, squash, [again, darker is better - more nutrients]) and very minimal fruit ("woody" fruits best - apple, pear, etc., very restricted on soft, sticky fruits).

Cavies (over 4 months old) should get no more than 1/8 cup (that's 2 tablespoons) of pellets per day and best is pellets made from a mix of grass hay and alfalfa, NOT straight alfalfa. Cavies are very prone to urinary tract stones - bladder, kidney, ureters, urethra - that can be fatal. These can also lead to urinary tract infections that can cause kidney damage and death. Alfalfa is very high in protein and the calcium:phosphorus ratio is wrong. This greatly increases their risk for stones and other problems.

These diet ratio will minimize their risk of dental problems also. I see many more problems from too much pellets and softer foods than from any other single thing. Lack of roughage (hay) causes an increased risk of many different types of infections from intestinal problems to upper respiratory infections to tooth root abscesses. This diet ratio will help the teeth wear properly AND decrease their risk of any GI impactions. Your G pig should get a check up at least once yearly (twice yearly is better) and your vet should look at the back teeth, not just the front. Ideal, is a quick gas sedation to do a proper check on the back teeth, and catch and correct any problems early. If your vet has lots of experience, and your cavy has NO symptoms of dental problems, they can use a small scope and get a pretty good idea of any problems that may need correction, (often done without sedation). Depending on the pig, this can sometimes be less stressful when done with sedation and we (vets) can get a MUCH better look when the pig is snoozing.

Are you all really interested, or do I need to stop now?

Odd Duck

I think you may be misunderstanding me. I mean grass hay, not alfalfa hay. Not just fresh grass! Fresh grass and grass hay are VERY different. It is important for them to get variety as well, not just select 2 items from the list. They need variety in their diet just like we do. Dandelion greens are fine, but should be just one type of green they get among a large variety. Alfalfa hay should be very minimal for adults. They DO NOT need grit! Grit can cause impactions that can be extremely difficult to resolve. Feed the proper diet in the proper proportions.

Fed in the right proportions, this will work for 95% of cavies or more. It needs to be grass hay (dried grass of the type listed), not just fresh grass. It is very important to have your cavy checked by a competent vet if they start to drool, have a wet chin, stop eating anything they used to eat, stools get at all soft, or stick together, smaller than usual, your cavy looses weight, etc. ANY symptoms or out of the ordinary behavior. Cavies hide their symptoms very well! If you see ANYTHING not usual, have them checked. I have saved many cavies that had overgrown teeth. They DON'T have to DIE. Get them to a vet. There are a few animals that just have their teeth shaped or angled wrong from genetic problems. These will need regular dental care, sometimes as often as every 3-4 weeks. If you feed the right diet from the beginning, this could be a very rare problem. Unfortunately, most G pig owners are not feeding the right diet and this ends up being a very common problem.

Sorry to hear about your cavy blaster800.

Are you all really interested, or do I need to stop now?

that's what I'm tlaking about...
I just printed that out for reference :veryhappy:

I think you may be misunderstanding me. I mean grass hay, not alfalfa hay. Not just fresh grass! Fresh grass and grass hay are VERY different. It is important for them to get variety as well, not just select 2 items from the list. They need variety in their diet just like we do. Dandelion greens are fine, but should be just one type of green they get among a large variety. Alfalfa hay should be very minimal for adults. They DO NOT need grit! Grit can cause impactions that can be extremely difficult to resolve. Feed the proper diet in the proper proportions.

pig update::

just added "Lil-Bit" to the list of adopted pigs. She was adopted from a rescue in Umatilla Fl... We are trying to socialize "Poo" and her together so they can be buddies. This project is tougher than I thought it would be. LB is a Agouti (I'm pretty sure) and Poo is a pure white Albino w/ tufts of hair like and Agouti.

The two got along until they got home and then it was on... piggy throwdown!!!! I hope they calm down and want to be friends...

Cute piggity, Pig Whisperer!

Try putting them both in a carrier and taking them for a car ride together. It's best done with somebody in the back seat with them and a spare carrier in case it doesn't work. The other thing you can try (sometimes works) is putting them both in the bath tub. The slick surface unsettles them enough they sometimes bond.

Some pigs can be persuaded to get along and some just can't. Don't push too hard, it can really stress them out more than you might realize. You can also retry after a few days to see if it works later.

Good luck!

you know.... that's probably why they got along at first... cause they were in the truck for an hour ride and were buds.. I am gonna try the bathtub. I also read to have 2 small towels so you can seperate them quick w/o getting bit... Thanks for the advice...
