Looking for the best one. I wouldn't mind one that plays videos and what not since if I travel it'll be great for the 4 1/2 hour plane ride. Here are the direct links to best buys pages and costco. If there is something else better, let me know. Looking to order one possibly tonight. Lets just say you arent paying for it either...:sneaky:Thanks!

I personally have an iriver 799 1GB MP3 player. To be honest it has been just "ok". I do wish I had more storage space. I always rip CD's with Windowes Media player at the highest quality wich has the biggerst file size. I found my biggest problem was lack of music so I go bored with it fast. It quit working so I got another on warrenty. It does have lost of cool features like an FM tuner and I have every accerosry for it.

Now i know a girl with a 30GB video ipod. It has plenty of storage and you can watch movies on it!! But you can only install movies that are mov or mp4 format. SUCKS! You can also get games for it. But you have to buy the games from itunes which costs extra. It is also tricky playing games on that touch pad they have. I think I will eventually get one though...

You can get mp3's from your music CD's. I ripped a bunch myself using friend's CD collections. But then I had a hard drive crash and lost them all. I ma mainly just lazy when it comes ot computers anymore. I spend enough time a day on the internet. I would rather go out and do something productive.

One cool thing I have for my iriver is a cas that makes it water proof! I have seen these for digital cameras too. They make them for the ipod. Check out

H2Audio

Whatever you buy, plan on spending another 50 - 100 on a hard plastic case, an FM transmitter, a docking station, whatever. You will want them once you have an ipod!

Not to hijack an already hijacked thread, but if anyone is interested in a NON-VIDEO iPod, I have a 4gb Nano I want to unload. It's practically brand new. I kept it in a rubber case so the condition is excellent. Have original box, manuals, USB cable, etc. $100 shipped in the US.

ipod all the way. the new video nano seems to be the best bang for the buck. 199 for 8 gigs plus video. the screen is just a little bit smaller than the big ipod video's. plus these things are freakin thin. my 2 cents.

I have had 2 Ipods (Ipoops) die on me. One was the original the other a 20gig(i think). any way, after 3 batteries for the first I got the second, cheap production using cold solder and my motherboard came apart. The hard drive socket came off the board. SO I am not a fan of the ipod. So now I have a Zune and love, far better for me. I also have a small sandisk that I use for work. I wont buy another Ipod after my experinces, but its like the ford/chevy debate I wont own another chevy either just from my own troubles.

EDIT Id like to see the new touch ipod, and see how reliable they are. They look neat with wifi.
But I found the one you need its a super cool Hello Kity one!!

i have an ipod.

i have a first or second generation one, its 20 gig. i only really use it for my car, i have it hard wired to my alpine headunit so i can control every thing from the head unit, so in theory it gets used every single day so it has been used for 4 yrs like that.

i like it, i know a lot of people hate the itunes / apple interface. so if your not happy using itunes and don't like how it works don't get the ipod cause its pretty much the only way to get music on it.

i very rarely use it any where else, every once and a while i take it with me running or listen to it on the plane. but it has been reliable still holds a good charge after many years of being charged and uncharged constantly.
i say its a good bang for the buck.

I have an Ipod, and I love it. THeres so much aftermarket for it, so many products, so much software. Being popular has its benefits. Between my ipod and my buddies and my brothers creatives I definitely like the ipods interface better, as well as the software. Plus i can use it as an external hard drive. I love my ipod. 30 gig video

Yeah I would get an ipod if you can afford it. I haven't used the new ones so I ma unsure about them. My Samsung UpStage phone has a touch screen and I don't really like it. But my friend's 30 GB video with the circle touch wheel is ok. itunes isn't that hard ot use to put the music on I just hate how you can only put theire file types for the video. Still though ipods do have a large aftermarket and I would like to have one hard wired into my ride as well. That makes it a lot nicer than buying a CD Changer or having 10,000 CD's in your car.

I can't believe so many people put up with that. If I can't just (simply) put my own mp3s on there forget it.

I just got this by accident last week when I went to exchange the charger on my old gps system...they made me exchange the entire unit since they no longer carrry my old gps. I noticed you mentioned you travel, so perhaps this would work well for you...it's pretty cool w/ a mp3 player and it will download audio books as well. The where am I feature is cool as well! (and this thread is funny!)

Well, I have an Iriver Clix. Cnet Review (http://reviews.cnet.com/mp3-players/iriver-clix-8gb-second/4505-6490_7-32425795.html?tag=prod.txt.3) Purchase Link (http://store.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?CS=mistic&BusType=BtoC&Count1=745647609&Count2=662788033&CategoryID=5&Target=products.asp) This is the only mp3 player around that when I use people say wtf is that? Then I show them the video and they go, I need to get me one of those! Seriously though I have over 150 games and 120 themes for it and can fit 8 full length movies on it of half decent quality. Plus it doesn't use a proprietary anything cough:apple:cough

Nah you can put your own MP3's on there, no biggie. It is just drag and drop, an ipod will play them no problem.

What erks me to no end about itunes is how when you buy music from them, it is in MP4 format and will only play in itunes!

So if you burn a CD and try to play in in your car no go. If you try to play it on your iriver, samsung, san disk, zune, whatever, it won't work.

That girl I was talking about every time we are at a store she is like "buy me an itunes gift card" over and over again. Well I am liek i will go buy you a new CD of that artitist. She pulls the I only want one song... Classic debate.

Here is what I do. I go to the store and buy the whole CD. Sure it costs more. But when I get home, I rip the CD using windows media player to the highest quality. That way I have the songs in MP3 format. Than I burn a copy of the CD for my truck's CD player. I take the original CD and I put it back in the case and back on my CD caddy.

Now when it starts skipping and is all scratched up... I chuck that burtn, sharpie written CD in the trash and burn a new one! It is great, my original has no play time on it no handeling and is still in great condition! There is no sense in paying 20 bucks for a CD to only wear it out. Those CDR's are like pennies each. I will burn CD's all day long before I wear out a new actual music CD.

I got an IRiver 20gig model for a couple of reasons. 1) You can record your own audio through an internal mic, external mic, or Line in. And it records directly to MP3/WMA that you can then take and burn to a CD, etc. 2) When I plug it into my computer (any computer for that matter) it shows up as a 20 gig hard drive that you can drag & drop anything onto it. So if you want to store/transport something other than music files, you can. You can also take anything off of it just as easy... so no messing around with itunes and not being able to take music on/off, etc. 3) FM tuner.

I've had mine for 2-3 years and have been happy with it for the most part. Apple has the market covered as far as accessories, so if you need all the cool gaggets to go with it, then you'll probably want an IPod. When I got mine the Ipod didn't have the features I needed and to my understanding, even now, is too restrictive in putting stuff on/off for my liking.

09-27-2007, 07:41 PM
Yeah the iriver's are nice when it comes to recording. I had an a-holle professor and I would record his lectures or any time I had to talk to him. Well lets just say he wasn't too pleased when a student complained about him going of in class on them. Just so happened to be a friend of mine so I provided the MP3 file :).

I think you can use a program called idump to get your music back off an ipod.

I know my iriver won't let you go backwards with certain songs to the PC.

Do you use the software they give you or do you just use Windows Explorer? I opted to skip the categorizing and stuff the software provides and just use Windows Explorer because it gives you unrestricted access to it.

I was using iriver's software. I will try Windows Explorer next time.

I need to go get mine out and actually use it. I have a lot of things I have bought and never really used. Time to start using these tings!

Another plus of my iriver 1GB is that it lasts forever on on double A battery. Then again it only plays music or the radio. A video ipod will require a lot more recharging.

That brings up another point, they can only charge through your usb cord. That is unless you buy an aftermarket wall charger or dock for it. Keep that in mind when buying an ipod because the accessories start adding up too!

I need audio at work to preserve my sanity.
They won't let us store any MP3's on the computers (makes sense) and they don't want us to stream anything.
I am getting tired of burning CDs/DVDs.

I guess I am looking for an Ipod. Seems to work with Ubuntu from what I read.

this thing is my ipod, mp3 player, phone, gps nav unit, portable wifi hotspot (my laptop wifi card sees it and piggybacks off of it), you name it.

this thing does anything and everything, it's pretty dam ridiculous. i'm in love with it.

i have an 8GB card in it right now, and i spent some of the boring bus and plane ride time from my vacation to jamaica this last week watching movies on the nice big screen and listening to tons of mp3s when i was walking around the airport/hotel...

the cards pop in and out real easy so i also have a 1gb card that has nothing but some of my favorite mp3's in case i want to use the 8gb sdhc card for my asus eee laptop to watch movies on. it was totally worth it imho.

i'm not really a gadget guy, but this phone frickin rocks. it runs a version of windows so you can install/download all kinds of ridiculous programs for it.. freeware, commercial, etc. i can watch youtube vids, surf the net, etc.

cant say enought good things about it.. aside from having to reboot it every once in a while (windoze, what can you say), thats about the only issues i ever have with it.. even the batteries are cheap. i have 3 $15 batteries for it so i've always got plenty of juice.

get an ipod touch...ive been rocking an 8 gig since march...

its awesome, super easy to use and i currently have skateboard videos and tons of music on mine.

my bro has a bunch of games (even an nes emulator) on his and he still has tons of room to add more stuff.

best thing is the wireless capabilities...if you are anywhere near a network it will connect to it. So that means you can youtube almost anywhere as well as use the built in browser to check things like this messsage board.

Mmmmh.....I don't want to spend more than $300, so that would be the 8 gig model.
Email and wifi web browsing, I am not sure it's worth the premium to me.

Are you sure your ITunes is not set to update the movies??? My ITouch did the erase deal 2 times, but I think I did it once by updating my movies... it will erase everything then update it w/ what is in your folder currently (I had it on another computer)... Hey Nick, what do you like most about the Touch?

The really accurate high resolution touch screen has to be the best part. I personally hate wheels, and joy stick type arrow pads on these types of devices. The screen just makes it so much more interactive. You can pinch the screen to zoom and there are lots of little shortcuts. I guess the layout is very user friendly IMO...

There is tons of software and things you can do w/ it too... It is very loud and the ear pieces are high quality... The layout for the music when turned to "landscape view" is really nice. It makes it easy to look at your stuff (when you have a ton of music)... The worst thing would be no bluetooth, but I have an adapter that sends a signal to my home stereo to stream music.

yamaslut
07-08-2008, 02:38 PM
also.... non music things:

internet is not blazing, but fast (yours will be 3g so internet will be faster)
the Safari browser is very nice and displays actual internet pages, not truncated mobile web sites. the display can be switchedto "landscape", or "portrait" to view sites... You tube, google mail, google maps interface.

I wish it had GPS capabilities though..

After some consideration, I think I am going to go with an Ipod Classic 80GB.

What I want is a media player with huge capacity so I can store all my stuff on it (well over 20 gigs now on my HD, and I've just started collecting stuff again). I want to listen to that and podcasts at work.
Don't need Wifi at work. Would probably be a distraction.
The touch looks really nice. But it's not what I am looking for.
