so this weekend there riders bailed on me so i figured it'd be a good time to fix my truck, a few weeks earlier a brake line exploded while pulling my boat home from the ramp, so i start looking, realize the issue is on the frame rail behind the gas tank...tank has 1/2 tank of gas in it....all my real tool...including jack are @ the shop @ the farm....30 minutes away & i'm too lazy to go get it, so i lower the tank by my self just enough to try to disconnect the fuel lines so they don't break...well they were brittle enough that they already broke, proceed to drop the tank, realize that i have 9 feet of brake line to replace....rusted out.
so i go to the parts store, get some line, but the don't sell just the connector, it's attached to that hard plastic line...so ok, i'll bite, take it home, cut out the old brake line, bend in the new line & on these newer truck that thing is bent around all kinds of crap, then start on the fuel line, if you've ever messed with that line, you know the only way to make it pliable it to boil it in water for 10 min, so i cut ti close to length, boil it, put it on, strap the tank up (by myself) i cut it a little long thinking it would flex enough to bow a little but, WRONG!!! kink, so, i start thinkin, i don't want to drop the tank again, i can get to the fitting, i'll just cut it off the top side....(dumb) so i do that thinking i can use the heat gun to make it pliable enough to put the connector back in the line, nope, so drop the tank, cut the fuel line back off, boil the section i had cut off earlier, can't get it to go on the connector past the 3rd barb....eh...screw it, i'll go with that....put it in strap up the tank...(by myself) realize the pressure on the line when the tank is up is almost pulling the line off the connector, knowing what would happen, i turn the key on just to watch the fuel spray...sure enough, screw it, went to town, bought some hi pressure fuel line, dropped the tank....3rd verse, thankfully not same as the 1st...DONE!!!!!!
i'm starting to like my desk job my knuckles look much better these days

Being a Mechanic Does get old, especially when you do it for a living I've been a F-18 Mech in the Marines:drillsergeant: for about 5 years, and I just switched jobs to be a Crew Chief on Helicopters (Flying Mechanic, Door Gunner Load Master all in one) Im Just happy Im going to be able to fly on what I fix! But the worst part about turning wrenches for a living is when you get to burnt out, and all the projects sitting in the garage dont get done, and then you dont get to enjoy them, talk about a crappy cycle!! But hey you got your truck fixed, and the satisfaction of doing it your self!

Yea right it is in your blood.... even if someone else's ...... lets just say... ski breaks down you are right there with ratchet in hand so when the next bolt needs to be taken out you can do it.
I know I am the same way.... I can't watch and I don't want anyone else to do it either... so just do it ..... (where is the nike swish smiley)

No, it sucks when the vehicle is designed as a non-user serviceable unit, and some basic design paradigms aren't adhered to for the most common service items.

No kidding?
When you have the factory tools, and factory diagnostics, its easier than it is for guys like me, I only have seat of the pants intuition, and a lifetime of knowledge of keeping things running, mechanical or electrical.
the cost saving measures used by most manufactureres nowadays, coupled with the general ( and I dont mean you specifically) NIMRODS working at dealorships, have basically ruined it.
there is basically no repair on a typical new car that is cheap or simple.
to those of us who understand how things work, and enjoy fixing things, that sucks nuts.

Preach on brother, that is exactly the way I feel. I try to repair all that I can but on most vehicles today there is only so much you can do without special tools or diagnostic equip. It drives me nuts to have to pay nearly $1000 to send a vehicle to the shop for what would seem to be a simple repair. I still fix many things that most people would depend on someone else to do, and will continue as long as I am capable of doing so.:banghead::soapbox:

your right,
the manufactures care less about what service and what work the customer can do, its what SELLS$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.
unfortunatly, we (the people in the trenches) are not part of the master plan

i'd have done it that way if my truck didn't have the 5th wheel... that would have been a pain without the snap-on impact to break that ugly sucker loose

PERFECT example.
chevy full size trucks/SUVs.
high pressure fuel pump INSIDE the fuel tank, no way to access it without dropping the tank or removing the bed.
On my 1980 Jeep Cherokee, there was an access panel under the rear bench seat, to get to the fuel tank sending unit. ( thinking ahead the engineers were- there wasnt even a vital part in there- external fuel pump!)
on my 1987 VW Jetta, there was an access panel for the top of the fuel tank, thinking ahead again, smart engineering, designed to be serviced.
GM however, decided to save the $1.87 that it would have cost on EACH vehicle to put a removable plate in there, knowing full well that the fuel pumps were one sketchy part of an over all sketchy induction system.
I hate GM. can you tell?
thats just one of the many reasons too.
that stuff is not designed to be in service for long, or serviced when its broken, or serviceable when its time to repair or replace. basically disposable transportation.
Just went thru the same ordeal on a 95 k1500. Next time the bed comes off!!!

$1.87 fuel access panel X 500.000 trucks = $935.000 or let the customer go get a $140 sawsall that they can own for life.
Thanks GM:scratchchin:
LOL I take my repairs to the dealer now.

right, the initial buyer would have likely opted to pay $1.87 more ( I would) if they knew what it was buying them.

You wouldn't believe the type of cost reduction goes into vehicles. I see it every day. It's really really stupid.

in the late 80s, sometime around there Full sized Ford trucks started useing PRESS in plastic hoses for the clutch hydraulics.
they are VERY difficult to remove and replace without a leak.
I guess they saved a few bucks over a decent hydrauilic house, rubber with metal crimped ends.. that could be re-used on a few different master cylinders.
How about how thin the brake rotors are on most new cars?
if you dont get even torque on your aluminum wheels, then stop hard, then hit a puddle of water. bang.
Your rotor went from hot to cold TOO fast, and its now warped, and the car/truck wobbles when you brake hard.
Nice, they saveed not only manufacturing costs from less material on the rotor, but also MPG because the rotor is lighter too..
some things, Id rather not have the "savings"
