So I buy this 701 61x engine, it takes a while to get to me, because he is busy with school and work.
Granted, I told him I was not in a hurry ( he had reservations over shipping on a Monday Versus the preceding Friday, I said no problem)

He got the Cashiers check 8-14, I got the engine 9-4

And it arrives, like this.

Mouthfulloflake

Not a big deal, I requested that he ship it on the bed plates to protect the lower parts... he did.

when I pulled on that box it fell apart, and the engine was resting on the carb/intake side ( instead of the bottom/ bed plates...) in the box, with a couple of sheets of bubble wrap.

I think that likely caused this.

Now, normally, I would claim this off to bad luck.

but in this case, I loaned out my spare carb, over a year ago!, and its new owner apparently loves meth more than me.

so I sort of needed the extra carb...

I haven't had a chance to check the compression yet, if it isn't good, that is REALLY going to piss me off.

Ouch! I've been inside a "brown" sorting facility and can easily see how this would happen. Hope it was insured.

I would ALWAYS build a small crate (just a square box) out of 2x2's and ply, than put it in a cardboard box.

YES it adds weight to shipping, yes it takes 20 mins to make and yes it takes a few screws.

Its part of the program for selling a valuable part IMO. Shipping companies butcher packages, and the $20 you invested and 20 mins of time saves you many headaches with claims, and even more time holding for an agent who has a clue what they are doing.

I trust engines being shipped in in cardboard as long as it is done properly. Any time I have done it I used the hard styrofoam board sheets cut to size. Or I can imagine that if it were double boxed with packing material between the engine and the first box, and more packing material between the first box and the second, would be okay also.

Yep, motors should be crated, never in cardboard. The UPS delivery guy could care less whats in the box, he just knows its heavy, and it pisses him off, therefore the round box. Sorry to see this happen.

many people use rubbermaid plastic boxes or coolers to ship motors in.

Mouthfulloflake
09-05-2007, 04:57 PM
yep, ive shipped engines both ways, well packed in carboard, with foam, and dense cardboard sides/bottom, and ive built small crates too out of scrap lumber.

I also noticed, that both the lo and Hi adjuster screws were out almost 4 turns.

the engine was sold as " good running"

maybe Ill have time to see if it will start on the bench tonight, or maybe a compression check.

my guess, it had some pipe added at one time, and NOT the right jetting?

so an effort was made to compensate with the adjusters.

Nice..

I have shipped motors and been shipped motors in regular cardboard boxes...nothing wrong with that, but for future references make sure to put like 30,000 arrows pointing up and 'fragile' or that thing is going to be thrown all over the place

kurtwolff

I know the ski the motor came from, it was bone stock with the exception of a B pipe and K&N filter (I actually picked the ski up in GA when SJ-John sold it). I don't know about the jetting or anything, but the ski ran great when I rode it the weekend after I picked it up. Good luck, and from what I know, the ski was only ridden as SJ-John's backup when he had it and had never been in salt before.

As for shipping, I always double-box and use lots of styrofoam/bubble wrap, have shipped about 10 motors this way with no problems. I have received motors in shoddy packaging, and luckily they were okay. SBT ships in some super solid cardboard boxes, great to re-use if you get your hands on one!

RANT ON - Man, that sucks. It is obvious that he knows little about how to properly box up something heavy that will survive shipping. As most of us know, you have to isolate the object within thick layers of some energy absorbing material that will keep it from shifting within the packaging and it must be strong enough to withstand at least 10x the weight of the object. An 80lb irregular shaped metal object with relatively sharp edges can punch through a lot more that a couple layers of bubble wrap in short order. This kid needs to get his act together before he loses all credibility with this group. There is no excuse for something arriving in this state. If he paid someone to pack this up, he needs to get his money back and reimburse you for any damages. I would be livid at this point and prolly on the road to NC for some IN YO FACE time. But thats just me.. - RANT OFF

break his knees, jebus, you think I would say that and be serious?

IM not in the mob.

I havent bothered contacting him.
he has not returned calls, or PMs since he cashed my check, what would make me think he would start now?

the engine runs, the carb got broke in shipping,I doubt he isnt going to do anything about it.

I feel LUCKY that he even had time in his busy life with "school and work" to find time to ship it.

this is post is just a warning to other folks thinking of dealing with him.
( for those of you that are slow, I would advise AGAINST dealing with him)

I tried calling, and sending PMS, many times before the engine arrived.

you are entitled to your opinon, BUT, im tired of playing phone tag, and trying to "catch" him between classes.

he wont answer my calls at his house, the ONLY response I ever got was when his mother returned my call, ( I left a message on HER machine)

It isnt worth trying to get her involved is my point, and I feel like that is the ONLY way he would even attempt to make it right.

like I said, I dont expect him to fix it, it was BARELY worth the hassle for him to ship it to me for $670 obviously, why would I be inclined to think he would want to mess with a "cracked carb" after he got the $$$?

if he wants to deal with it, he knows how to contact me, ive left my number, ihe knows he can find me here.

my game, my ball, and I just lobbed it into his court.

shipping an engine.....

-wrap in plastic bag sprayed with fogging oil.
-seal bag
-place bag in box large enough to accomadate engine
-pour expanding foam around engine
-seal box
-ship to buyer

little excessive but pretty guarantees it will get there in one piece

If you're going to spray foggin oil in there, you better make DAMN sure the bag ain't leaking.
If the shipper finds oil coming from the box, they will most likely stop shipment.

Err??? SBT uses liquid expanding foam. They start with a box, drop some foam in (In plastic bags), then drop the engine in, then drop more foam in.
That is a nearly foolproof shipping method.

A poorly taped box with a few pieces of foam is a very far cry from that. :bigok:

Err??? SBT uses liquid expanding foam. They start with a box, drop some foam in (In plastic bags), then drop the engine in, then drop more foam in.
That is a nearly foolproof shipping method.

A poorly taped box with a few pieces of foam is a very far cry from that. :bigok:

well i was unaware of what type of foam

i just knew they used foam that had grey plastic on it

and i didn't mean just throw the foam in there

Matt_E
09-13-2007, 03:39 PM
What's so nice about is that the foam expands around the motor (or whatever is in the box) to leave no wiggle room.

I can vouch for the fact that he wasnt prepared to ship an engine.

Feel free to call him, Ill hold my breath until I hear from him.

Oh, maybe I shouldnt do that.

not to say anything but i'm also pretty cool with corey

but i'm sure he wasn't prepared to send a motor

and big pieces of foam would work too.

thats how SBT sends their's out and the show up to us fine.

if you want i'll try to call him and see if he wants to make it right.

dont sit there and talk crap about me when you don't know me

i saw this thread was about one of my friends and tried to justify it

having you sit there and call me immature and stupid is something you haven't the right to do

you don't know me

i have done nothing in this situation to show that

i was trying to fix it so corey wouldn't get a bad rep but who cares i guess now

starting crap like this is the reason alot of the big guys in the sport don't post

i'm ending this here, it's pointless to sit here and argue through typing

Let me get this straight...you are saying you don't think its stupid to become a middle man in a bad situation that happens to be none of your buisness???? You let Cory handle his problems, he's a big boy... I think you were trying to be the "nice guy", but that's really not helping... What did you accomplish??? NOTHING.... I apologize for calling you immature, but your actions were...

I understand your intentions bro, I'm a young'in myself, but even if Corey is your friend, theres no justification for the immature and disrespectful way he has handled this situation.

By blindly throwing yourself in his corner, of course you're going to catch some heat.

If you were really trying to help you would try to get Corey to take some action, not act as 6th grade note-passer.

Yama-Freak,

THANK you for trying.

He did send me a PM about the cracked carb.

it basically said:

It was cracked the whole time I had it, It slipped my mind when I was selling you the motor, so what do you want me to do about it?

so, Corey, id trade this cracked carb for a stock carb ( in the same working condition) if you want.

the only aspect that bothers me about the carb is the leak gas thing, I dont mind the shoddy taper bore, really, I just dont like gas leaking in my hull.

Ive not installed it yet, only ran it on the floor.

the electronics all work ( haven't checked charging system though) but inside the E box is a a little crusty. they will clean up and make great spares though.

the engine has good compression, so Ill drop it in my boat whenever i have time , hopefully soon, and check it out.

I think it will be fine.
