this is a super easy mod and it makes the 550 way easier to start. look for any starter out of a 1989-1994 sea-doo. I bought a new one from ebay for 100 bucks. only thing you need to do it find some longer bolts (see pictures) they need to be about and inch or so longer than the bolts for the 550 starter. the seadoo starter is skinnier and it has not bolt in the back that attaches it to the crank case other than that the fit is the same. once you do this you will never go back.

Pretty good find, I had a feeling about the interchangability, but wasn't sure.

you really can use a starter for any seadoo made through 1994. 1995 had a mix of a few that will work and some that wont. but all the 1994 model skis will work. just do a search for a 1994 sea-doo starter on ebay. that will get you what you want.

how much more torque (if any) than the stock 440/550 starter?

I heard that it really spins the motor quiet well over the 550 starter

I dont have any numbers but I could hear a big difference when cranking. there is no doubt that this spins it quite a bit better.

if the seadoo starter is longer than the 440/550 one then it probably has more winding area on the armature and more magnet surface area like the goki aftermarket starters, in wich case it is more powerful, it also eats more battery to use.

well I know that when my ski gets angry I can crank this sucker for about as long as my old stocker, no major difference there.

are the seadoo starters cheaper than the 440/550's?

I think they are about the same. 100ish bucks for a new one on ebay.

I'm just wondering how it can be considered an "upgrade" from the regular starters if you don't find much differences in the way they perform....

WHAT! it turns the motor way faster. you can tell a huge difference. its a huge upgrade. where did you read ``you cant tell a difference in the way they perform``.

^^^^^^^^^^...here....^^^^^^^^^^^^

this quote doesn't quite fall in line with the "upgrade" comment, so thats why I was confused with you opinion of the starter, sorry.

I think he ment about the battery life? Although I could be wrong....

:cheer2: wow great info here guys :notworthy: I've been goin through this struggle with my 550's since I've had them. They're my favorite skis but if it stalls in the water i can't start it back up! I can only start it on land and then push it in the water and go ride and hope to God it doesn't stall. How about the "high torque" starters for 550's???
