first off, i like to say that if reading through this, you find something you don't understand, or i've left a step out, send me a pm and i'll update it to be more beneficial to the readers.

starting picks...stripped down, i figured after freezing a lower rod bearing...what better time to do these mods.

first time cutting holes in a ski as you can tell. this was an extremely stupid way to cut the holes. made it very difficult to get the foam out, but atleast i know what's inside the ride tray now. next time the front hole will be much bigger!!!

i don't have a pic of this part but while we had the foothold hole there, we reinforced the sidewalls with 24oz cloth, then the footholds went on
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/619/s8fr.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/1523/pb2600018xl.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
then for the foam.. got it from www.uscomposites.com the 3lb density, i got 2 4lb kits, it was barely enough and i didn't remove all of the foam above the bondline, so for a complete refoam, you'll need atleast 3 4lb kits of whatever density you choose
http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/7476/foamin7ni.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
just be sure to cap off your hole to let it expand inwards, we filled in around the footholds first to avoid the foothold popping out from the foam having nowhere to expand to

i am really really really broke, so i just bought a used crank out of a 62t to put in my 650 to get me back on the water, but someday:fingersx: it'll happen....I WILL HAVE A MAGOO SPECIAL... or i will die trying:biggrin:

next we filled in the bondline with the 2 part foam, then cut the excess off with a hacksaw blade to have an easier surface to deal with for the engine bay sidewall reinforcement, and layed a couple layers of cloth for reinforcement
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/8950/bond8dw.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
then we put the piece that we cut out back in... for all of this i used west systems epoxy kit, with 404 filler when we needed filler and mostly 10oz cloth if i remeber right, mark correct me if i miss something or get it wrong, it's been a while ago.

yes, previously known as the devil ski, (we had to preform an exorcism (sp) on it) it caught on fire while mark was using the heatgun (yes the one that busted throught the side, maybee they had a score to settle with each other lol) and the great stuff foam he put in there to hold a pvc in exploded and i think it even burned his eyebrows...i'd have loved to have seen him walk back in after that:1244:

this is mark's post from the other build thread

Apply contact cement to the ski and the turf, two layers. When you think the turf and ski have dried go get a beer and wait some more. Apply turf to the ski after it has been heated with the heat gun. It helps if you have someone heating the turf as you lay it down. I use paper or other objects to keep the turf from sticking prematurely in places I am not currently ready to apply it too. I would recommend pop sickle sticks to keep the turf up.
Heat the turf as you press it down and take your time.

After turf is on beat the heck out of it with a rubber mallet. Then beat some more. Trim the access off. I like to trim the edge of the bond line at a 45 deg. angle with a new razor knife.

another piece of info from mark on turfing, might help some of the newcomers out

The glue will stick to the paper if too much pressure is applied, I would recommend using pop sickle sticks then you can just pull them out and let them hit the floor while you are working the turf. The heat helps the turf be more pliable and easier to apply it to the contours.

The same system applies to the bond rails, glue heat and apply. I always cut the edge that meets up with the side of the ski on a 45 deg also; this gives the edge a real clean and flush look the taper is away from the ski with the top diamond edge touching the ski and the bottom edge away from the ski. If that makes sense to you.

Now you cut off the access under the bond line with the 45 up so the water doesn't catch the edge. You can also super glue around the edge to really seal it that will be Jon's job not mine
http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/648/g5kd.jpg (http://imageshack.us)http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/153/h9pa.jpg (http://imageshack.us)http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/3960/i7ke.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Next we will turf the tray, remember HEAT and HAMMER. Oh yea, beer helps too.

Again, if you think it's dry leave and come back in a few.

Tray turf is getting installed. I started by sanding the entire tray with 80 then cleaning it real good with some adhesive remover. I then cut out a piece of turf for each side over size so I would have some access to trim off.

The foot hold holes are the last thing I do when I apply the side turf; I make a cut up the turf in the center of the hold then heat it up and press it into the hold up onto the top of the hold. After that all you have to do is cut a small triangular piece and fill in the rest on the inside of the hold, that is if you want to do the toe area I usually never do its not seen and serves no purpose.

Keep everything one piece, small little pieces do not last.

the ski at my house now...(actually it was in the livingroom in front of the TV for like a week, my wife is awesome!) the turf is all done. i'm working on finishing the hood now, i'll try to post some pics later. my wife even got to put some of her blood and sweat into my ski...good thing to because i can't cut a straight line to save my life, too bad she bleeds like a stuck pig, but she had fun doing it. we all had a pretty good time working over at mark"s and i'd like to thank especially mark for helping me out like he has, also for letting me crash at his crib, and the food, this guy can cook!!! also lou, john g., jeremy h., and greg for all the extra help and laughs. the hood project for today is to reinforce where we put the hand hold holes, and finish sanding the outside where we glassed over. should be ready for paint soon!!!
oh ya, the finished turf pics

we used a closed cell foam kitchen mat from walmart for the padding under the turf, was like $8

now for the hood liner mod, i cut my liner out with a cutoff wheel, left the glued on part, i figured that it would help the strength a little bit
http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/2339/hood0op.th.jpg (http://img229.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hood0op.jpg)
i accidently cut through the hood, so pay attention if you cut yours out, but as mark has taught me, "you can fix anything with some epoxy" words from the almighty:hail: :hail:  http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/6724/hoodoops6ds.th.jpg (http://img229.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hoodoops6ds.jpg)for my new liner i went to homedepot and got a sheet of frp shower paneling. (got the idea from Idok) i was going to use a hood of a corvette that had been wrecked (a body shop here was going to "donate" it to my cause" ) but it was waaayy thick and heavy. also in the 2nd pic you can see where i used some of that panel to close off the upper vents, saved on epoxy, time, and it was easy. i also epoxied some of that panel to the inside of the front vents

I would usually paint the ski before turf but Jon wouldn't let me because I was going to do a camo skull theme and that didn't work out to well with Jon’s youth group. But Jon has done an excellent job on the paint, I have seen a few pics just needs x-h20 decals now and I think we can handle that thanks to Northgraphics for the image.

on to the hand holds, after cutting the holes for the holds, i layed in cloth for reinforcement, i had some 24 oz cloth and 4 oz cloth, so i layed 3 layers of the 24 covered by 1 layer of 4 oz on top and bottom http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/5756/aaa5sl.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
next, since i have soo much extra frp left (it's a 4'x8' sheet) i used that to make my hand hold buckets too, i was actually just screwing around trying make a mold to lay glass with and this fit ferfectly, so i didn't feel like waiting for glass to dry and trim that to fit, so i just glued these in with the west systems and fillerhttp://img214.imageshack.us/img214/5973/bbb4be.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
then i trimmed them down to where the cap would meet the hood and capped them off with more frp
http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/5162/ccc9ca.jpg (http://imageshack.us)http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/2131/aaaa6pz.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

next i drilled my air intake holes and the beveled the edges down with sandpaperhttp://img236.imageshack.us/img236/3687/bbbb2gu.jpg (http://imageshack.us)then i layed my liner in to see where i wanted to drill my water drain holes, i made my cut kinda high because i was afraid of making the hood seal area weak,http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/2706/cccc2ah.jpg (http://imageshack.us)finally glue the liner down, i was going to glass the liner in, but the epoxy and filler seem good enough, if it ever pops out, i can always glass it later.

i cut holes for my intake hoses, i got my hose from home depot, it's the spa hose, about 2" o.d. i put electrical tape about an inch from the end i put in the hood so i knew how deep the hose was, i wanted the intake hose to be hight in the liner so water would run around it instead of down the hose into the engine bay. i glued these in with epoxy and 403 filler...i ran out of 404 filler

now after it's been sitting for like a whole month without me doing anything to it, i finally started on the paint, i waited so long because i was waiting on a guy that wanted to paint it for me and we just never could get hooked up, when we finally did, he wanted $650 to do it....there aint no way that i'm putting $650 into this ski for paint when it's still got a 650 motor. so my rattle can project starts. i had no clue about anything to do with paint..price or how to, or what kinds of paint there are, i found out the hard way not to use laquer clear on enamel so the first attempt got stripped back down, and the #2 attempt is going well. the paint i used for the orange is duplicolor metal speckles burnt orange, it looks a lot like the new chevy avalanche in orange, and gloss black on the handpolehttp://img226.imageshack.us/img226/8417/10000854mi.th.jpg (http://img226.imageshack.us/my.php?image=10000854mi.jpg)http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/1581/10000623kq.th.jpg (http://img226.imageshack.us/my.php?image=10000623kq.jpg)

ok, well i got some free time at the shop today, so i decided to play with ideas for turf on my handholds on the hood. i wanted a flame kinda thing but i royaly suck at drawing, but this is what i came up with http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/851/10001642tl.th.jpg (http://img502.imageshack.us/my.php?image=10001642tl.jpg)

i used a visa-vis dry erase board marker to outline the turf on the hood where i wanted it http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/6338/10001620lf.th.jpg (http://img340.imageshack.us/my.php?image=10001620lf.jpg)
taped it off, took forever to tape because once again i suck at this, http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/2512/10001630yn.th.jpg (http://img340.imageshack.us/my.php?image=10001630yn.jpg)

this is where i presently am, i'm waiting on small paint brushes

oh, i also turfed the inside wall of my handhold.

just because i'm a freak about testing things, and just to make me feel better, i set the tank on it's side, put water in it over the new filler and set it on a dry spot to see if it leaked, i left it for about 4 hours...no leak so that's always good!!! http://img303.imageshack.us/img303/7796/picture28ii.th.jpg (http://img303.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture28ii.jpg)

ok, i remembered my camera today:arms: well, first off, putting my handpole and cables in, i ran across a very simple fix for getting the steering cable through the thru-hull fitting in the pump area....this may be well known info, but a newbie like me might read this and need this info...

i just took some carb vent hose i had laying around for my mx bikes, pushed it from the rear into the engine bay. pushed it onto the end of the cable threads, and pulled it right through... instead of it hitting on the fitting in the pvc http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/9665/10001806gk.th.jpg (http://img205.imageshack.us/my.php?image=10001806gk.jpg)http://img116.imageshack.us/img116/577/10001811px.th.jpg (http://img116.imageshack.us/my.php?image=10001811px.jpg)

ketsair, nice job on the square. looks very nice!

a word of caution about the tank mod.... if/when ANY of that sealant breaks loose from the inside of the tank, it will get stuck on the pickup tube/s right at the top where theyre constricted for the fuel line to get locked on with a ziptie.

i speak from experience.

Thank you sir.

Since we are chatting,
how do you like the hood ?
Do you wish you made any more hand holds or placed the ones you have further forward or towards the back ?

I'm in the middle of modding a hood, it's hard to decide on how many holes to cut .
Since you have ridden your ski what do you think?
Would you change anything ?

Sorry for bugging you with the dumb questions but just like they say to measure twice cut once I'd rather ask.
