Surf "Re-Entry"
Basics
Ok, this is one of the most difficult tricks to do properly and land clean while still under power, so don't get discouraged w/ it cause you won't be landing them clean right away... This trick can be done both directions on the wave, depending on the break and which way the wave is peeling... Most people have a preference on which way they like to go, but can do them both directions... That's how I am, I prefer to go left, but can go right too..
Safety
The biggest problem you will come accross while doing these (learning) will be nosing the ski into the sand. Here in florida we are forced to work in very shallow water so hitting bottom is pretty common. Out west there is less of a chance of that, due to the larger wave conditions and deeper breaks... "Going over the falls" and "nosing the ski in" are the main concerns...
Positioning & Approach
When setting up for this trick you need to find the section of the wave that is breaking, peeling (start on smaller waves) and approach the wave section at about a 30 degree angle (or less). The key is to turn into the section hit the wave at an angle while using the power of the wave to propel you forward... Remember as you are approaching the section, lean the ski over so the bottom of the ski hits flat against the wave and have your body position forward (surf stance is required). This will keep your speed up and makes the trick flow and look a lot smoother...
Execution & Control
Once you are in the air and are flying back toward the beach you will want to lift up and compress yor body to bring the nose down and the tray up. Keeping the nose down is key to landing this trick and riding away clean... It's also makes it look so sweet... Remember this, cause it's what most surf riders strive for... "Nose down and hot on the throttle"
disclaimer:
Below are some shots I had on my computer (I wish I had some better ones, but I don't)
I don't have many pictures of other riders, so if you have shots that are a nice example or a bad example, please list them and explain why....

Great thread Slutty
Re-entrys take a little to learn, but what a blast...
after you get them good, if you time it right like Nick was sayin,
Lean boat and clamp off the lip... That lip will toss you far,
and in the sweet spot.. If timed right.. if not... go to bail thread !
I spent most of last couple times riding just surf slashing and re-entrys.
Brap... we need a surf slash smiley... :splatt:

hardest thing to do but once you get your timing down they are the most fun you can have...the key is matching the angle of the bottom of the ski to the angle of you takeoff zone like slutty said...
also you gotta keep the pole low as you can on take off with weight on your front foot...as you leave the lip you gotta tranfer your weight back so you dont pearl on landing...
finding the correct section to hit is important...it cant be too mushy and you want to hit it later than you think...
these pics arnt the best cause im not very high at all but you will get the idea
this one my pole should have been alot lower on takeoff

I hate to do this to my buddy Havell, but this is the only one I could find that was a bad example... Everyone messes them up, so don't take this as a hit to Havell...
I delete all the really bad ones of myself, but this was w/ the Daytona pics... :cool2:
Notice how the pole is too high and his waist is way too far back causing his nose to be too high... Big no-no, but like I said, we all do it from time to time...

thanks
you will get the best pop if you hit the wave right at the edge of where its breaking....
and when done properly, the landing will feel like you dropped onto cotton balls.....right into the fluffy stuff

It is a good feeling when you know you landed a good one. It's like the wave spits you out in front of it. You think you are going to land hard, but you just float out from infront of it. I also, loved watching Special FX in Daytona. Great amptitude and style.

So aproching the break of the wave your turning into the wave, but once you feel the wave hit the bottom of the boat you turn back towards shore?????????????????????????????????????? Or just like a stab and ripping back towards shore off the lip?

backside to the wave is easiest for most people...
notice Taylors frontside entrys are totally different than his backside...
Strangely but not on purpose I do them the same way he does, but opposite directions cause he is regular stance... (not saying as good either, that boy can fly)
frontside to the wave my body is generaly on the inside of the ski and the ski stays flat, while backside my body is on the outside and I turn the ski more at an angle. look at any pic and you will see this... I think it's just the most natural way to do them since your knees only bend one way.... ha ha ha...
keeping the nose down is easier going backside too, cause it's more like a nose stab... that how I do em at least.... I've never seen anyone do a frontside nose stab.... I don't think... Have you???

im pretty sure i landed that one..i had another HUGE backside one out there but my finger slipped off the throttle and i stalled it..i landed perfect but i couldnt get it started agian to ride out..
backside is easier.just go up to the lip and kind of turn as you go off the lip...not like a nosestab, more subtle..

cant really do that when your strapped in. not many people can ride switch easily enough to do that. imo its easier to just stay same stance and hit it heelside or toeside.
yup...
i thought about peps with front hold would change...like slut has
... when i try to go left with left foot front i always get the nose up like Havel picture slut posted
i think you are right about keep same stance

people are afraid of going nose in on re-entry's so they lean back and end up w/ nose high yuckiness...
your waist should be hitting the bars or right there and knees should be bent. weight forward is everything.... remember to compress your body and pull the ski up to you also...

I think its also important to keep your ski on a rail with your weight inside the wave on take off & landing. When landing weight forward & your ski bottom flat you'll find the bottom quick. I can land good size airs nose down in little or no water.

I use to switch stance a lot and use to ride left foot forward all the time... It has taken me a while to get goofy stance down, but after riding like this, it actually feels natural... I can do re-entrys both directions either stance, but goofy backside is my favorite...
I have always been goofy footed, but for some reason when I first started to ride standups I put my left foot forward and it felt right... (I have no idea why) Another thing... I was not privy to all this surf stance stuff, we were just dorks (surf sluts) riding around in our footholds all the time, hell we just didn't know any better at the time and no one I knew or rode w/ had surf style. Everyone was doing 500 barrel rolls a day and me and dre were flipping too, but that's it... I would surf every once in a while.. Now I surf around about 70% of the time...
Anyway, I stared surfing the waves more and trying re-entrys cause my riding bud Ted did and it looked like a lot of fun. I watched him cause he use to surf all around the country and Central America (I figured he knew what was up)... (ding ding) the light comes on...
You just need to develope a style that works for you... keep changing things up if you are not happy...

Regular or goofy...it's all good. Just try to transition and land forward and neutral (after all the body English action during takeoff and airtime). It helps when landing in the thick whitewater to keep things upright. The pump doesn't work well in the foam. Another reason to have the nose down attitude and landing on the forward part of the foam....Keeps you moving forward so the pump can start to work.

speed will give you more pop and throw you ahead of the wave. you cant give a last second brap to push you ahead of the wave its all in the approach speed.
taylor curtis with the sickest ive ever seen.

actually if you watch taylor he barley has any speed before he takes off..he just cruises slowly to the lip waits for it to throw then blips it...thats pretty much the opposite of what i do but when you go fast its harder to time it perfect..ive been trying to slow down my riding alot lately and it helps for sure

heres my contribution to this thread.
i like this sequence cause it 's complete. even got the landing. i just need to get more amplitude. the fear of smashing the nose severely inhibits my progress. i wish these waves broke like that in 8 feet of water.

Love the write-up slutty! I've been trying this the last few times & have pulled off 3 so far. I've barely got any air at all, but I'm going to try to focus some time into them today.
I can only do them towards the left, but I guess that as I get better, doing them in the other direction will come. I'm definitely digging riding surf style lately & masterblaster is definitely a good one to learn from. I hope he's riding today:Banane25:
BTW also a special thanks to Keefer for my new sig :afro:

yes its all about timing...you arnt doing them in the footholds are you???...you need the front foot forward to get the leverage to level the ski out and get it in front of the wave...id say if you are landing too far off the back you need to hit it later but thats easier said than done...(i repeat reentries cannot be done properly in the footholds!!!!)
oh yea well we had the tubbie discussion before but this is another place where the tubbies shine..when you hit the lip the wider nose "pops" more and it dosnt get defelcted by the lip causing your balance to be thrown off...with tubbies you get a more consistent feel when you hit it..

also when you go higher it gives the wave more time to break while you are in the air so you arnt landing in such a critical spot (landing in the whitewater not the top of the tube) this is obviously more important the bigger it gets..once again easier said then done

Yeah, I did one where I landed on the tube of a pretty good size wave last fall and it ate me up. When I land in the whitewater I have a heck of a time trying to get hooked up and going again.
I don't have tubbies. I do about 50% flatwater and the boats I have ridden on flat water with tubbies I didn't care for. I really need to find a boat I can spend some time on in the surf(with tubbies).

yea sometimes when you land on the whitewater it helps to crouch down super low and drag a leg strait off the back of the tray to stabilize the ski...i dont really use any throttle as you are going down the whitewater cause it will just spin.(just enough to keep from stalling the motor).if you land it right you will be going "downhill" so not much throttle is required until you are in front of the whitewater....hope that makes sense

Do the west coast waves have the massive vortex of vacuum on the backside of the wave that drills you into the bottom if you land in it? Our east coast waves sure do.......that's a real incentive to land in a sweet spot!
I dig the comment about "don't use foot holds", I'd like to see them done with out strap-ons too.

Oh yea..ive been sucked into a few of those..thats how i blew my facemask on my helmet out...you can use one foothold just not both feet back dumper jumper style...:ugh2:

I know when I land a good one because I am out in front of the whitewater and the wave kinda spits you out. It is a great feeling when you hit it right in the pocket and the power of the wave forces you towards the shore. We are looking at a great wave for the next few days. I may have to call in sick if the small craft advisory is lifted.
