I need some feedback. Our attachments are sort of out of control. I have it set to allow just about any size, which is great for everyone, but...the storage will be an issue by the end of the year easily since we're growing so fast.

Case in point: one thread posted today had 13 attachments I believe, for a total of 14.9Mb.

Here are the options in order that I think make the most sense:

I find a vbulletin mod that will automatically resize as they are added - doesn't exist yet unfortunately.
I install some gallery software (working on it already actually) that resizes and you can link to that.
I limit the size on the server to something like 200Kb/attachment, so the user has to resize to make it fit.
I disable attachments and everyone has to use Imageshack/other host.

sorry... I post a lot of pictures with my threads
There high resoultion too Ill start using photo shop and making them smaller.

But it would be cool if we didnt have to alter our pics or have duplicate copies. If you can get some thing that necks all pictures down to a certian quality that would be cool. Were not swaping porn, just trying to explain and show off stuff haha.

thats my opinion I guess... I vote #1

Or people can donate money to help the site pay for itself. It could be voluntary and you could see how much people are willing to give.

make the max width 640 pixels. it will limit the size of pix posted and you shouldn't have to scroll right to see an entire photo.

its nive to be able to post high quality stuff too though. guess imageshack.us will work for that though.

if you don't have attachments get ready to post/steal ronny's thread from riot about posting pics for dummies...you don't know how much you need an attachment feature until its not there and you will be bombarded with pm's asking "where is the attach button" or "how do i post pics on here" every time you have an influx of new users from other sites...most of which use VB and keep the attachment feature enabled...

i had that happen to me on a phpbb board that i ran (remember me asking about the attach mod you found for riot a long time ago?) and it drove me nuts...

just my 2 pennies though...

What about just automatically deleting pics after a certain time. Like 3-6 months.

noo:bigeyes:
please dont if you delete pics to a thread you might as well delete the thread. I hate searching and finding a good old thread on the "other site" and the pics are gone:frown:

I vote #3, I already resize mine to <100kb from habit, easy to do just put up a link to image resizer (powerty for xp, free to download then its just right click and resize) and drop that limit.

Would you consider donations for more storage?

I like the larger pictures; they look great on my 9.2 million pixel display.

Maybe make some more X-H20.com stickers in different sizes for donations $25.00 or more? I sure there would be more than a few people who would want to put some more stickers their Jet Skis.

It's not about storage, we have plenty of that.

We're not even 3 months old and the attachments are already 1.5Gb. Backups, moving to a new server, etc will become very cumbersome.

My opinion do whatever you need to keep the images on the server.(ie. archived). 200k limit is fine, make it clear though, I hate going through all the steps then having to start over when the upload gets rejected.

If you set a limit maybe have a gallery or something for worthy hi res stuff..

That sounds like a good idea. I'm also working on an online resizing tool.

limit the size, if someone want to post a larger file they can host it.

xp powertoy's image resizer is great! very nice and easy resizer that compresses the pic quite nicely.

for example, i just converted a pic off my camera, 2304x1728 pic, 1.72MB goes to 1024x768 pic, 116KB in seconds and still looks great for use in a forum in my opinion
