Monday after a weekend in Rochester a group of us rode the Niagara river Devils hole. What turned to be a nice day, turn bad. Mike Janssen C5 from Burlington ON. got caught in the rapids along with 2 other ski's. Mike got hit in the head and knocked him out with severe trauma to the head. Everyone was in search of Mike in the turbulent waters. I found him faced down on the US shore line about 500 meter below the devils hole. I quickly ditched my ski and grabbed Mike and started CPR up against the rocks. 2 secs later we had him on the rocks and continued CPR while Jason Stoyer held pressure on the wound, after a short time we had him breathing on his own (labour breathing),the nurse said. Who just luckily was hiking the gorge. Some time later paramedics and fire dept showed up and we had him carried up the gorge, and air lifted to ECMC in Buffalo.
.... our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike and the Janssen Family

Kyle,
Thats insane. Wow. I'm assuming he wasn't wearing a bucket. My buddy use to know him well. Damn..... Damn.........
On a side note I've seen head trauma first hand. Lost my friend to it within a minute... Its hard to witness, and stay with revival. Not pretty.
Best wishes to Janssen and family.

I really do to. It's seriously unfortunate to hear something like this about a fellow rider.
I hope everyone remembers their helmets.

here is a link with the original info that was part of the Rochester race scene...
The reason i am putting this link here is because LisaLisa has posted some info about donating to Mike's medical funds...

Posting for Shelly as she cannot seem to post here:
Ok people...Any donations that you would like to make for Mike Janssen will be done through PayPal to my existing account as Mike does not have one set up at this time. samccloskey@hotmail.com, please feel free to put notes in there that you would like Mike to get on your behalf.
Please note that 100% of these funds will be going directly to Mike for his medical expenses. Those of you know me know that I would NOT take advantage nor sabatage your efforts in helping out one of my good friends. You can however request information anytime you wish and I will be more then happy to provide that for you.
I will be posting regular updates as to the progress of our fundraising drive and I thank you from the bottom of my heart for anything that your sending Mike's way...His family, friends, his girlfriend Olga are amazed to see all the support and thank each and everyone of you for your efforts, prayers and any contribution you've had to helping our fellow racer #c5 Pro Am Ski Stock, Mike Janssen!

I heard an announcement over the PA system on Sunday that Mike had opened his eyes this weekend - which is a good sign. I know they began weaning him off the drugs which were inducing the coma so they were happy he responded accordingly. I'll call Shelly today and see if there's any updates on his condition.
On another happy note, over $2,000.00 (American ;) ) was raised in Harbobr Beach...and our fellow racers in Texas raised a little over $1,400.00 in his honor as well!
Nice!
