Oceano Dunes near Pismo Beach announced as location for final stop on 2007

For Immediate Release:

July 11, 2007

Organizers are pleased to announce that Oceano Dunes near Pismo Beach will
be hosting the final event of this year?s IFWA Freeride World Championship
Tour. The event will take place October 19th-21st as part of the Oceano
Dunes Festival.

this is right in line with the Smashing Pismo (http://www.x-h2o.com/forumdisplay.php?f=48) freeride and contest from last year that Joe Kenney helped put together. I can vouch it was an awesome time :brap:

Wow, this is great news. I threw the dates on calendar in case I'm in need of a mid-fall road trip. If they manage to get all the dudes from Europe, this could be sick.

Can anyone offer details on the "Oceano Dunes Festival?"

Hey gang - man, awesome news travels like wildfire on the internet...Tschello actually sent this to just simply advise we've secured the date and time...and are approved. We're so excited it's not even funny -

ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING THE PERMIT IS APPROVED FOR OUR PROPOSED VENUE ADJUSTMENT AT OR ABOUT MILE MARKER 4!

YEP...NO MORE PICKING UP FROM YOUR CAMP SITE AND DRAGGING YOUR STUFF ALL THE WAY DOWN THE BEACH TWO MILES AND THEN DRAGGING IT ALL BACK O THE CAMPSITE AT THE END OF THE DAY STUFF ;)

CarolAnne Stinson is the person who really deserves the huge thanks. I am not a professional promoter and she is, and has years of experience in this type of event...she and I, and several others worked together on last years event with Joe...and we wanted to do this in his honor and to keep his event going. I proposed the site and date, put her in touch with the decision-makers and she made it official. We're VERY fortunate to have her on baord and I'm honored to be working in conjunction with her.

Though we asked not only Joe, but his entire family for their blessing last spring before moving forward with this event, he is not yet aware we are at this juncture, so PLEASE allow me a few days (I'm traveling right now) to get in touch with him and give him the terrific news.

There will be MUCH more to come on this...please stay tuned...save the date, and prepare for the Mother Of All Free Rides!

You can bet there will be at least a sampling of the Europeans at the event. Keep in mind, there is a still a battle for the world title between Ross Champion and Pierre Maxient.

I have it on good authority that Jimmy Visser will be at the event as well.

This is not a tour stop to miss. This event is taking the place of Brazil as the deciding factor in many of the tour placings.

Lots of best guys from around the world should be headed out for this one. The rumors about this have been out there for a long time and we should get the best of the best here for the final round of the IFWA World Championship. I hope to still be in contention after Brazil, but be sure I will give 150% either way once we get here!

We structured it as an invitational last year, and that's our intention this year as well. Unfortunately, there were only a small number of competitior slots available last year, and we lost some confirmed entries at the last minute...this year we'll have at least 30 open spots.

The criteria for competition will be announced next week. The press release actually went out a little earlier (that's why I didn't post it anywhere myself) than I would have liked, but it was important that folks lock in the date to save asap.

Like I said, a LOT more exciting info to come next week...do us all a favor and don't go off half cocked with comments about the invitational part of the event...I think you'll be very pleased with the options.

Thanks! - I'm out to the National Tour Stop/CanAm Cup in Harbor Beach, MI now....chat Tuesday,

Thanks for the nice stuff you guys are saying...

JFB is the man, and if you don't know him...you all should come and meet him and watach him ride.

And I don't know what the situation is with this being "invite only" but I am sure our lovely LP will clue us in really soon, and I would not sweat it too much. There are a lot of top professional level surf riders here in the US who have not competed in the IFWA yet this year (Darin Anderson, TC, Slutty, Pancaker, FJB, Luke, Jerry, Cuong, etc.) and I can not imagine a contest with out those guys. I am sure what ever the situation with the invite only stuff...it will be all sorted out LP always takes care of us and the sport.

That's great - really glad you hear you guys are making the trek!

The nearest airport is in Santa Maria, CA...about 15 minutes away - but not a real major airport. San Luis Obsipo is about 35 minutes awaybut a smaller airport still, so will most likely be more $$$ to get into and out of. You can fly into anything in southern Cali (though I would personally avoid LAX like the plague)...Burbank or Orange County/John Wayne International are good options...or better yet, San Jose, CA, Oakland, CA or San Francisco, CA and drive south...traffic will not be anywhere near as bad coming from the north than the south. About a 3 hour drive from north/San Jose area. 5+ from So Cal.

Other transport options are (if you have a lot of free time and are budget minded) fly into So Cal and take the train to Oceano, CA...you can pratically walk to the venue from the train station ;)

Again, sorry for the info trickling out...even though we have the permit, our title sponsor is signed, and the logo is in the final stages, the cat was let out of the bag early and I want to make sure we have all the info, or at least a good chunk together so we can distribute an official, complete press release.

Stay tuned, mark those calenders and start planning your transport....oh, and book your camp site NOW here: http://www.reserveamerica.com/browseMaps.do?topTabIndex=CampgroundMap

Please note:
This event is being held at the Oceano Dunes SVRA - NOT Oceano Campground at Pismo State Beach (though you are welcome to camp there too ifyou want full hook up and a short drive).
At Oceano Dunes SVRA, the campsites are on the beach in the OHV area.
Four wheel drive vehicles are recommended.
A maximum of 10 reservations can be made for Oceano Dunes.
Each vehicle entering the park under it's own power must have an individual reservation number. Vehicles on trailers do not need a reservation.
Reservations are made by ReserveAmerica only, do not call the park for reservations.

This is NOT Oceano Campground at Pismo State Beach.
At Oceano Dunes SVRA, the campsites are on the beach in the OHV area.

Due to the popularity and nature of this park, there is no space available for parking additional cars. Each reservation is limited to one vehicle and one legally towed vehicle. Each vehicle entering the park under its own power must have an individual reservation number.
Fees include entry for 1 vehicle and 1 legally towed vehicle per reservation. Four wheel drive vehicles are recommended.
Vehicles on trailers do not need a reservation.
A maximum of 10 reservations can be made for Oceano Dunes in one person's name.
Reservations available Year Round through ReserveAmerica.
Reservations can now be made up to 2 days prior to any arrival date.
Due to tide and beach conditions, check-in is as tides allow on your arrival date.
CHECK-OUT TIME IS 6:00 P.M.

Site
Site is primitive, there are no flush toilets or showers at this park. The park is highly used by off road vehicles and can get noisy.

There's also some terrific info here on the official website of the venue: http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=1207

Also, if you're a non-resident wishing to operate any off road vehicles (sand rails, quads, motocycles, etc.) in the dunes or on the beach this weekend, please refer to the requirements for non-resident users here: http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/pages/1140/files/CA%20Nonresident%20OHV%20Use%20Permit%20Vendors.pd f

ARRIVE: SAN FRANCISCO AT: 9:01P

UNITED 5615

Ohhhh! Did you guys happen to check the Santa Maria airport for flight info? I hate to say it (but I did post it as the closest airport above) but it will probably be more inexpensive than SLO (San Luis Obispo)...plus you probably won't have to pedal as hard in the crop duster they send you down from SFO on...LOL!

If any others are looking to fly in, please be sure to check flight in to SANTA MARIA, CA....15 minutes away from the site (SLO is only about 35 minutes) but a little more major airport.

I am not sure if I'll even be on site by Thursday (Carol Anne will be for sure, but I'll just be returning from 10 days in Havasu, so not sure if I can get away again that soon)...if I am, I'm happy to come and get you....if not, I'm sure we can find someone to come and get you. Might cost you some Silver Bullets though ;)

Sure did. Prices were the same, plus, the flight into Santa Maria arrived later at night, the lay-overs in LAX were longer then they are in San Fran and there is no late afternoon/evening flight out of Santa Maria on Sunday.

Google shows San Luis Obispo is like 14 miles from the Grand Ave entrance and Santa Maria is like 20 miles. Either way, they are both pretty close to the site.

Both Michael and I have transportation covered, and if anyone else flies into San Luis Obispo around that time, I'm sure we can give them a ride too.

Speaking of Silver Bullets, I'll probably get 4 or 5, FRESH from the brewery cases to bring (it's nice having a bro-in-law who works for Coors).

Hey gang - so sorry I haven't been able to update youon this recently - things have been insancely busy - between working all but one of the National Tour Stops, all of the west coast regionals races and my regular job..and CarolAnne flying all over the world to run the rest of the IFWA WOrld Tour stops, we haven't had an opportunity to update you - but now that things are finally settling in, there's some terrific news onthe horizon.

We'll have www.SurfSlam.com live by this weekend with some terrific informaiton - which should include registration info from CarolAnne if she can get to an internet in Brazil...and of course you can always check out www.

See the new press release thread for the lastest sponsor info - I think you'll be pleased...

And of course - Joe is working hard on being able to attend this event. He still needs your love and support, so give hm a call and let him know you want to kick back on the beach with him and enjoy this event we're biulding for him!

I will duplicate all of my posts here that I place at other sites, so no need to surf around - really appreciate the bandwidth luv the X is showing - we couldn't do it without you guys!

Hey Lisa, now that the comp is down the beach by the campers, is there a plan on how/where it will be set up? Will you reserve space for it early in the week so we don't park on top of where you want it set up?

How far away from the comp area will we need to be/go to just ride on our own?

Thanks for all the info. I'm so looking forward to going again.

LisaLisa

Great questions....I have sweet-talked my quasi-better half into making the trek directly from Havasu to Pismo on Tuesday Morning to meet with the WORCS Motocross event team and stake out the area not only needed for the event, but the surrounding area for use by our campers/spectators. It will be well marked with banners, scaffolding and such by Thursday afternoon. Our permit also delineates the area we have reserved for the event as well...by having our team stake off early, this will make it a lot less likely we'll have to ask random beach campers to relocate, or risk in beng surrounded by us...LOL!

Some more terrific news:

We have secured Joe Gesicki and Mike Jones of AzHiAzIAm as our illustrious event announcers!

The judging will be consistent with the other IFWA world tour stops; 90% of the same judges are being flown in to judge this event, with the roster being filled out by non-other than The God Father of Freeriding, Mr. Randy Laine.

We are in the final stages of completing an agreement which will allow us to screen not one, but two brand new, never-before-seen X-Treme Sport flicks on site Saturday evening. This will be done in concert with our friends with the WORCS races under the Big Top Circus tent, with a huge Benefit BBQ.

Stay tuned for more on this - but be sure to bring some cash as you won't want to miss out on not only the amazing raffle swag (need a tricked out pit bike? It's one of dozens of cool prizes!) but we'll be having another 50/50 raffle with 50% of the proceeds going to our beloved Joe Kenney, and the other 50% going to the winner(s)!.

There's tons more great info coming soon, but you guys gotta let me get the deals signed, and press releases done...hopefully this will appease you for the time being ;)

Good news, I hope staking it off will give us the space we need. However, what about all the traffic driving by all day long (especially during the comp) - that place becomes a freeway!!! I only ask this because I saw it mentioned over at PWC2day: http://www.pwctoday.com/showpost.php?p=1352119&postcount=19

LisaLisa
09-21-2007, 08:33 PM
We've taken that into account...since our permit will not allow us to shut down the beach access, we've placed the venue almost at the end of the beach. Considering the fact that the Sand Highway starts approximately 1 mile before our event venue, and that is where roughly 85% of folks actually choose to access the dunes, the only traffic we should have to deal with will be a much smaller amount of actual campers getting to and from their sites (should be mainly our group). We felt the exposure of 65,000+ spectators to the sport was well worth the added site management for our staff...if you've been there, then you'll know, there is no such thing as a bad seat in the house there ;)

The fact of the matter is: each venue offers it's own unique challenges, but the payoff for not only our competitor's, but our spectators will be much greater than what the Grand Avenue venue afforded. Better, bigger, cleaner surf, on average - due to proximity and exposure, a much quicker clearing of any marine layers which might crop up (last year the Grand Avenue venue had some serious marine layer until well after noon - a breeze doesn't access that area of the bay until later in the day), the ability to comingle with our counterparts at the WORCS races easily, exposure to a much larger crowd of spectators than the north beach entrance, the convenience for all to access the site....believe me when I say we very carefully considered the pros and the cons, and the new venue far outshines the old one.

I'm looking forward to seeing you all be able to relax, enjoy watching our Pilot's performances, and play in the surf in the waters immediately adjacent to the competition site. Our staff of highly trained and experienced event experts will deal with the challenges...just come enjoy the ride =)

As of this evening....with a pretty exciting bit of news just leaked about another proposed JSU sponsored, international rider in the works....

I heard that too, its just a thought. Didn't Maccluggage say he'd never be in a IFWA event again?

I'm not sure about what was said in the past, but I'm presonally very excited to have Chris on board. He called me himself to ask about the venue and event layout...I do think a lot of his decision to ride the event has to do with this being "Joe's event" that CarolAnne and I are trying to keep alive and grow for his future benefit...Mac is a good friend, and has a tremendous amount of respect for Joe... I think he wants to honor Joe by being there to ride.

No reason to speculate on why or why not someone chooses to ride, except to say these are the best of the best in the world, and who in their right mind would want to miss this event?

If you haven't gotten your camping reservation yet, then you need to do so immediately - this weekend WILL sell out...there were a little over 400 spots left yesterday and they only pre-sell 1,000. With the HUGE WORCS group, I don't want a bunch of folks forced off the beach at 11:00 p.m. each nite...we'll be too busy having a ton of fun bombing through the dunes and roasting mashmallows over our huge bon fires ;)

Go to www.surfslam.com for more info - then link to the MySpace page located at the bottom of each page and check the blogs for info on how to reserve a camp site.

See you all in less than a month!

Who's got an extra boat for stand by for LeeAnimal?

LeeAnimal could use a ski with straps. The ski she rode in Daytona had footholds, but she couldn't keep her feet in them.

The second Annual HYDRO-TURF Surf Slam is right around the corner...in just three short weeks, 30+ of the world's best freeriders will come from far and wide to compete in this stellar event in the Oceano Dunes near beautiful Pismo Beach, CA

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e239/LisaPrice/2007%20HydroTurf%20Surf%20Slam/60.jpg

There's some awesome stuff on tap in addition to the competition; The Fourth Annual Smashing Pismo Beach Party camp-out (on site AT the event venue), and of course, since the event is held in conjunction with the WORCS Motocross races, there will be some great handle bar to handle bar action going on as well. Not to mention the 1,500+ acres of the Oceano SRVA sand dunes to play in 24x7....and keep your evening free Saturday night - I can't tell you yet exactly what we have on tap, but stay tuned for an important and exciting announcement in the next few days. Suffice to say, if you were there last year and enjoyed your evening, then you should be very happy campers this year!

ALSO: Please be sure to swing by the HYDRO-TURF Surf Slam lounge located conveniently between the Blowsion Kustom Kolors booth and the HYDRO-TURF booth on the main vendor ally during the IJSBA World Finals this year. We'll have some comfy digs to kick back in, and ice cold beverages to sip while you take a load off and view some of the best freeride videos released to date - for free!

See you all soon!

Lisa, I was added last week and I have been doing some serious training on the water to prepare for this event with sicki.

Then again, at least you know I was wondering where you were, right? Not sure who may be competing in both, though I know a few who are spectating/riding for fun who want to run the WORCS race too.

Alrighty - consider yourselves warned...The gang from NorthWest Freeride are going to be shooting at the HYDRO-TURF Surf Slam this year, and it's a feature flick FOR and ABOUT Joe Kenney. Alisha Gohring will be doing much of the interviewing honors, along with Daylite Ramsey and his crew...so all competitiors, as well as spectators, be prepared to give your input on your feelings about Joe, how he may have influenced you in freeriding, o rlife in general...relate any funny stories you may have (and we KNOW there are tons with Joe) and anything else you'd like to contribute.

My personal thanks to the Northwest Freeride gang for doing this...it's just another facet to this event which pays tribute to Joe and our sport. Awesome!

K - normally I don't share emails, but this one is very touching and I think captures the excitement and luv involved in this project for Joe...from Alisha Gorhring:

Lisa,

I love you! Let's go HUGE!! We would love for you to expose it as much as you can. I have made two consecutive trips up to ride and chill with the guys in the surf....and work on our project.

The name of the video is "4JK....a tribute to Joe Kenney". It is the three of us and I have one other person committed to filming. Daylite and I are planning on doing the interviews...subject to change of course. Dayton will be in charge of the other footage. We are making crew shirts - 2 day Productions on front...4JK on back. That way our "crew" is a crew. We have three professional cameras, tripods, and the works and two handy cams that we just want lots of footage on for the filler stuff.

I hardly sleep with out dreaming about this and dreaming about being in the surf. I am SO FREAKING STOKED you are on board to put the word out. With all my heart I want the success and heart-felt-passionate-loving impact that we can imagine. I am sure that you know our goal is to make this go HUGE and have the proceeds (above a few of our incurred costs being covered)to go to his recovery and health. I - personally - want to get as many doors open - ASAP. It is three weeks and we have a ton of ground to cover.

Warren (Baze) says that I sound so happy and excited I just might jump out of my skin! True that! I know it will be a lot of work, but it is so freaking worth it. We have been studying up on the documentaries that we love...and the ones that don't quite hit the bar to really get a mental picture of what we want to achieve.

Additionally, please send any of your suggestions our way. We may or may not be in the film...my preference is to be in the "behind the scenes" part for direct shots. I don't mind as long as I don't feel like the camera is staring at me. I am so camera shy....I think! We are not the important people here.....And it is NW Freeride / 2 Day Productions.

Did I already tell you I love you? Thank you SO SO much for your support! I have this ever growing passion about riding since taking on my part for this project and spending some time in the surf.....it is my coke (even though I have yet to ever do drugs!) I am hooked!

In our interviews, we would like to have a general theme that addresses: what does Joe mean to you, how did you meet (if you know him personally), what is your favorite / most memorable experience, what makes free style / riding so important to you, how has freestyle/riding/ Joe changed or influenced your life, etc. Please feel free to direct questions, comments, suggestions, contacts, etc. to me as well as the guys. We would also love donations of existing footage of Joe.....riding, chillin, anything that people want to give.

Thank you again! I totally agree that it needs to get out there. HUGS!! Alisha

And one more thing....(there's SO much, it's really cool)

In case I haven't mentioned it yet, Mike Jones, owner of AzHiAzIAm Clothing is not only volunteering his expertise to announce the event with Joe Gesicki, but he and his wife are designing a benefit shirt which 100% of the profits will go to Joe.

Just weeks before Joe was injured, he and Mike had a conversation about new t-shirt logos...Joe had suggested "Airing Is Caring"....this will be the theme for the new shirt.

Little did we know how much that would ring true in his life...so when they become available (hopefully in time for sale at the event, but for sure online afterwards) please consider purchasing one...the logo design and quality will be top notch.

My thanks to every single person who has pitched in and made the event what is it. Without the likes of Ronny McHenry (Logo Desing) Erik Hahr (website develpoment and Admin), Carol Anne Guistina (Official Event Promoter) The IFWA (giving Pismo Beach a shot and a three year deal for the final stop of the World Tour!) The Folks at NorthWest Freeride for their documentary, as well as a super cool custom painted handle pole which will be auctioned for Joe's benefit) The folks at WORCS for allowing us to conspire with them for THE event of the year on the central coast, our advanced ground crew (Jeff Troegner for staking out the HUEG area well need to make this event a go, and my parents who live local and are currently papering the counrtyside with posters for the event to promote it)...our amazing sponsors - HYDRO-TURF, Blowsion, Skat-Trak, Jet Connections, Hot Products, K-38 Rescue, Liquid Militia, and RonnyMac.Com....and so many others I cannot seem to remember right now - well, a HUGE THANK YOU.

You guys rock,

Lisa,

It is probably somewhere in this super long thread, but can you explain when and how the auction is working?

As well as the raffle. How does it work, where can we purchase tickets, when will numbers be called, and do we have to be present to receive our prize?

Actually the handlepole auction and 50/50 raffle isn't on the thread yet - but these are excellent questions, and while I actually have a moment, let me explain (things are CRAZY busy right now...LOL!)

The Handlepole:
Several months ago Daylite Ramsey of NorthWest Freeride purchased an aftermarket handlepole for a superjet and did a custom paint job on it (if you like Slutty's flaming Surf Slut handlepole, you'll LOVE this artwork - Daylite did that one too).

We were going to auction it at the proposed freeride competition in Pismo last April, but the promoter didn't get the event off the ground, so I still have it packaged up at the house. I'll snap some pics and post them soon....it's a gorgeous pin up girl running the length of the pole. I'd like to have Joe autograph it at the event if he's able to attend. If not, then I will do so before it ships to the winning bidder.

Anyway...I believe the best way to sell this handlepole and give it maximum exposure will be to place it for auction on eBay, with the sale ending on Saturday evening...so folks that wish to bid on site can can. We'll have wireless internet access to bid there on site, so it'll be fair for everyone wishing to bid, but will maximize the bids for Joe's benefit. I'll donate the shipping and handling costs to anywhere in the continental U.S. I'll also post the link to the auction as soon as it's set up.

The 50/50 Raffle:
The 50/50 Raffle is an excellent way to raise money and is simple to administer. We'll be selling tickets in Havasu at World FInals in the Surf Slam booth & at the HydroTurf booth. You can also purchase them on site and before the event via Pal Pal purchases (sorry, I haven't been successful in getting Pay Pal to waive the surcharges, so we'll have to eat them). Tickets will be $5.00 each, or 5 for $20.00.

Ticket sales will end Sunday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. and the winners name will announced at that time over the PA system, as well as posted online in a press release. You will not need be present to win, so if you wish to purchase tickets on line via Pay Pal, it's no big deal. 50% of the total amount collected in ticket sales will go directly to the JK fund. The other 50% will be awarded to the winner. Make sense?

If you wish to purchase 50/50 raffle tickets, please send me an email at LisaOPrice@yahoo.com, let me know how many tickets you want, your name, address and phone number, once your payment clears Pay Pal, I'll complete the tickets manually for you. Unfortunatley, I cannot accept personal checks (bed previosu experience). Hope that info helps....Please feel free to use the link below:

Just for the record the handlepole IS NOT aftermarket. It's a stock pole from a roundnose that has been shortened about 1 1/2 inches and reinforced. I just don't want anyone thinking they are getting an X-Metal or AC pole or something.

Here's the original thread with pictures.

I am glad we have the EAST COASTERS rippin it up at this one... I wish I could make it. Next year, I will make this mission!!!.... but I allready have hit 6 freerides this year and am about to make it 7. :pat: Represent well, Mr. Slutski and Mr. Cake of Pans.

If the NW freeride guys need some JK footage, I have some from a Jersey Race a couple years ago. (just about 8 minutes of JK rippin some waves, no big airs... just carving and rippin) Hopefully, Nascency and Fasttimes will donate some JK footage to this movie or make one of their own!!
I would buy a video of JK rippin the whole time!

Pete,
My ski will be there, ride it if you want. I don't know if the other person will need it or not. I saw some talk about her putting in footwells in Havasu or something... dunno. Anyway it'll be there, you can ride it, she can ride it, I don't care. If someone else steps up then cool, if not and the thing is still running, take it.

DJ,
Any footage you'd like to let us use would be great. I would do my best to get the most out of it. If anyone else has any JK footage they would like to donate PM me. Still shots are welcome too.

The gates actually never close in Pismo/Ocenao Dunes...so put that in your pipe and smoke it ;)

Actually, I HAVE seen them close the gates, but only for short periods of time...like the year we had a freakishly high tide...the locals come down to the beach entrance/ramp and just laugh at the tourista's trying to bomb across the small area effected towing big tou haulers or driving big $350,000 diesel pushers....Remember that year Joe? When Laurel decided she could tow a fully loaded, lifted 4x4 which happened to be towing a big flat bed with a full sides tricked out dune truck out (it was burried to the axels)....and she caught her brand new truck on fire. I almost shat myself...and wet my pants simultaniously laughing my azz off. I actually think that was the same year Joe passed out (picture above) and we had a coloring contest on his "Hazard Zone"...Good times!

But no, the gates are scheduled to be open 24x7 there.

To everyone:
I was just reading the latest "Dust" ofroad moto mag.. and in the add for the Oceano Dunes race is the IFWA competition included in the list of events for friday through sunday including a huge pic of JK bailing off in mid flip. I really would like to say LP has done a wonderful job because without out her this probably would not be so.

THanks Lisa for all your effort. This sport owes you a lot of gratitude.
